YTL2 Charge on Your Statement: Identify, Cancel, and Refund

A “YTL2” charge on your bank or credit card statement is almost certainly a shortened billing descriptor for a YouTube subscription billed through Google. Google’s full descriptors read as “GOOGLE*YouTube” followed by the service name, but banks often trim them to fit character limits, which is how “GOOGLE*YouTube Premium” or “GOOGLE*YouTube TV” ends up looking like a cryptic code.1Google. Why the Amount May Not Match What You Expected

A YTL2 charge that’s a few dollars off from a familiar subscription price usually has a mundane explanation. Authorization holds appear as temporary pending charges to verify your card and drop off within a few days. Some jurisdictions added new streaming taxes in early 2025, which can bump the total.6Google. YouTube TV Price Increase Your bank may also add international transaction or currency-conversion fees. And if you upgraded from individual to family at some point, the higher rate shows up on the next cycle.

A free trial that quietly converted is another frequent cause. YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Premium charge the full price automatically at the start of the next billing cycle once a trial ends.7Google. YouTube Premium Billing Trials are generally limited to one per account, so signing up again on an account that already used one can trigger an immediate paid charge rather than a new free period.8Google. Canceling stops future auto-renewals. It does not trigger an automatic refund, and you keep access through the end of the current billing cycle.

Get a Refund From Google

If you want money back for a charge you didn’t intend to keep, request a refund through YouTube support. If you still have an active membership, start at youtube.com/account. Refunds may be granted when a membership’s features did not work as expected, but prepaid and annual plans are generally not eligible for partial refunds.11Google. Request a Refund for YouTube Premium or YouTube Music Premium Subscriptions purchased through Google Play go through Play’s separate refund process, and Apple-billed ones have to go through Apple.

If You Didn’t Authorize It

If the charge doesn’t appear in any Google account you can find and nobody in your household recognizes it, treat it as unauthorized. Google splits the process in two depending on what you find:

  • If the charge does show up in one of your Google accounts but you didn’t make it, file a claim at payments.google.com/payments/unauthorizedtransactions. You’ll need the payment method details, the date and amount, and a written description. Claims must be filed within 120 days of the transaction.12Google. Report Unauthorized Charges From YouTube
  • If the charge does not appear in any Google account at all, contact your bank or card issuer’s fraud department directly instead of going through Google.13Google. Report an Unrecognized Charge From Google
