The BMW i4 does not qualify for a federal EV tax credit. Congress terminated the new, used, and commercial clean vehicle credits for any vehicle acquired after September 30, 2025, so no i4 purchased or leased in 2026 carries a federal credit. And even before that cutoff, the i4 was ineligible for the consumer credit on its own facts: it is built in Germany, and every trim is priced above the federal cap for sedans.
Why the i4 Was Already Disqualified Before the Cutoff
Two independent rules kept the i4 out of the new clean vehicle credit under Section 30D, and either one alone was enough.
It Isn’t Built in North America
Section 30D required final assembly in the United States, Canada, or Mexico.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 30D – Clean Vehicle Credit The i4 is manufactured exclusively at BMW Group Plant Munich in Germany.2BMW Group Plant Munich. BMW Group Plant Munich That fact alone ended the analysis for the consumer credit.
It’s Priced Above the Sedan Cap
For sedans and any vehicle not classified as an SUV, van, or pickup, the manufacturer’s suggested retail price could not exceed $55,000.3Internal Revenue Service. Every configuration sat above the ceiling.
Income Would Have Stopped Many Buyers Too
Buyers also had to fall below modified adjusted gross income limits: $300,000 for joint filers, $225,000 for head of household, and $150,000 for everyone else, using the lower of the purchase year or the prior year.3Internal Revenue Service. The Credits Are Gone for 2026
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed July 4, 2025, accelerated the end of every federal EV credit. Three provisions of the tax code closed on the same date:
- The new clean vehicle credit under Section 30D, ended for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025.
- The previously-owned clean vehicle credit under Section 25E, ended on the same date.
- The commercial clean vehicle credit under Section 45W, ended on the same date.

The Lease Route Closed Too
Leasing used to be the workaround. Because the commercial clean vehicle credit under Section 45W did not require North American assembly, did not apply the $55,000 price cap, and did not test the lessee’s personal income, BMW Financial Services could claim up to $7,500 on a leased i4 and pass the value through as a lower capitalized cost.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 45W – Credit for Qualified Commercial Clean Vehicles That path ended on the same September 30, 2025 date as the consumer credit.6Internal Revenue Service. If you signed before the cutoff and the leasing company had already acquired the vehicle, check your lease worksheet to see whether the credit was built into your payment.
If You Had a Binding Contract Before October 2025
There is one narrow way a federal credit still reaches a buyer in 2026. If you had a written binding contract and made a payment on or before September 30, 2025, you can claim the applicable credit when you take delivery, even if the car arrived later.7Internal Revenue Service. FAQs for Modification of Sections 25C, 25D, 25E, 30C, 30D, 45L, 45W, and 179D Under the One Big Beautiful Bill This does not help i4 buyers on the consumer credit, since the i4 never met the Section 30D assembly and price tests. It could matter if your pre-cutoff transaction involved a different qualifying vehicle, or a leased i4 where the dealer’s Section 45W claim was already priced into the contract.
To claim the new clean vehicle credit on your return, you need the vehicle’s seventeen-character VIN and its battery capacity, both shown on the window sticker, and a time-of-sale report the dealer files with the IRS.8Internal Revenue Service. Credits for New Clean Vehicles Purchased in 2023 or After The credit is reported on Form 8936, attached to your annual federal return.9Internal Revenue Service. About Form 8936, Clean Vehicle Credit The credit is nonrefundable and cannot carry forward, so it is capped at your tax liability for that year. If you transferred the credit to the dealer at the point of sale for an upfront price reduction, the liability limit did not apply, because the IRS paid the dealer directly.
State and Local Incentives Are What’s Left
With the federal credits gone, state programs are the only remaining source of potential savings. About half of U.S. states offer something — direct rebates, state income tax credits, reduced registration fees, or sales tax exemptions — with values that range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand. Many are income-restricted or capped by vehicle price. Because the i4 starts above $59,000, it is likely to be excluded from any state program that sets a purchase-price ceiling.
Check your state’s energy office or department of revenue for current rules before you buy. State programs change often, and several run on limited funding that can be exhausted mid-year.
