If your account shows Supplemental Security Income as suspended, it means the Social Security Administration has temporarily stopped your monthly payments because something in your record changed, not that your benefits have been canceled. Your SSI record is still active, and in most cases you can get payments restarted without filing a new application. But the clock matters. If you disagree with the suspension, you may have as few as 10 days from the notice to request that your payments keep running while SSA reviews the decision, and if the suspension lasts 12 consecutive months, SSA will terminate your record and require a full new application.1Social Security Administration. Suspended Is Not Terminated
A suspension is a pause. A termination is permanent, and the only way back after termination is a brand-new application with a fresh eligibility determination. As long as you fix the underlying issue within 12 consecutive months of the suspension date, SSA can reinstate you without making you prove your disability or financial eligibility from scratch.1Social Security Administration. POMS SI 02301.205 – Suspension and Reestablishing Eligibility
Common Reasons SSA Suspends SSI
SSI is a needs-based program with strict financial thresholds, so most suspensions trace back to a change in money, living situation, whereabouts, or cooperation with SSA. Your notice should name the specific reason. These are the ones that come up most often.
Countable Resources Over the Limit
If your countable resources are above $2,000 for an individual or $3,000 for a couple at the start of any month, SSA suspends your payment for that month.2Social Security Administration. Understanding Supplemental Security Income SSI Resources Resources mean bank balances, cash, stocks, and other liquid assets. A tax refund, a small inheritance, or a gift can push you over the line in a single month.
Several things are excluded from the count. Your home and the land it sits on. One vehicle used for transportation, regardless of value. Household goods, personal effects, burial plots, up to $1,500 in burial funds, life insurance with a combined face value of $1,500 or less, and up to $100,000 in an ABLE account.2Social Security Administration. Understanding Supplemental Security Income SSI Resources Federal tax refunds are excluded for 12 months after you receive them.
Too Much Income
SSI is reduced dollar-for-dollar (after certain exclusions) as your countable income rises. When income climbs high enough that your payment would drop to zero, SSA suspends the benefit. For 2026, the maximum federal SSI payment is $994 per month for an individual and $1,491 for a couple.3Social Security Administration. SSI Federal Payment Amounts for 2026
Changes in Your Living Arrangement
Where you live and who pays for your food and shelter affect your SSI amount. If you live in someone else’s home and they cover all your meals and shelter, SSA treats one-third of the federal benefit rate as additional unearned income and reduces your payment.4Social Security Administration. Code of Federal Regulations 416.1131 – The One-Third Reduction Rule If someone else pays part of your rent, mortgage, or utilities while you live in your own place, a different calculation called the Presumed Maximum Value rule can also reduce your check. Either reduction can be large enough to zero out your payment.
Being in a Medical Facility
If you enter a hospital, nursing home, or other medical facility where Medicaid covers more than half of your care costs for a full month, your SSI drops to $30 per month.5Social Security Administration. SSI Spotlight on Continued SSI Benefits for the Temporarily Institutionalized In some situations you may not qualify for any SSI at all while institutionalized, which shows on your record as a suspension.
Incarceration
p>If you are in jail or prison for more than 30 continuous days, SSA suspends your SSI for the entire time you are confined. If that confinement lasts 12 consecutive months or longer, SSA terminates your SSI and you would need to file a new application after release.6Social Security Administration. What Prisoners Need to Know SSA does offer a prerelease procedure that lets you apply for SSI several months before your anticipated release date so payments can start quickly once you are out.7Social Security Administration. SSI Spotlight on Prerelease Procedure
Leaving the United States
If you are outside the U.S. for 30 consecutive days or more, SSA suspends your SSI starting with the first full calendar month you are absent. You are not considered back until you have been continuously present in the U.S. for 30 consecutive days after your return.8Social Security Administration. Code of Federal Regulations 416.1327 – Suspension Due to Absence From the United States For SSI purposes, the United States means the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the Northern Mariana Islands.
Medical Improvement
If your SSI is disability-based, SSA periodically reviews whether your condition still qualifies. If a review finds your condition has improved enough that you can work at a substantial level, SSA will suspend or terminate the benefit. You have the right to appeal, and you can keep payments running during that appeal if you act within 10 days of the notice.
Missed Reports or Missed Appointments
You are required to report any change that could affect your eligibility, including income, bank balances, living arrangements, and household members, no later than 10 days after the end of the month in which the change happened. Missing that deadline can trigger a penalty of $25 to $100 for each late or missed report. Knowingly failing to report or making a false statement is treated more seriously: the first sanction withholds payments for six months, the second for 12 months, and the third for 24 months.9Social Security Administration. Understanding Supplemental Security Income Reporting Responsibilities Ignoring SSA’s requests for documents or missing scheduled appointments for eligibility reviews can also result in suspension.
What to Do Right After You Get the Notice
SSA will mail you a notice explaining why your benefits were suspended, the effective date, and your appeal rights. Read it before you do anything else. The reason code decides everything about your next move.
Then start gathering documents that match the reason. For a resource suspension, pull current bank statements for any accounts SSA may have flagged. For income, gather pay stubs and records of any other money you received. For medical improvement, collect recent treatment records showing your current condition. For living arrangements, pull your lease, rent receipts, or utility bills showing your share of household costs.
Call SSA at 1-800-772-1213 or visit your local office with the notice and your Social Security number in hand.10Social Security Administration. Contact Social Security By Phone Some suspensions come from a paperwork error or a misunderstanding about your circumstances, and a phone call can sometimes resolve those without a formal appeal.
Keeping Your Payments Running While You Appeal
This is where people lose money they did not have to lose. The deadline depends on the type of suspension.
- Non-medical suspensions (income, resources, living arrangements): if you request reconsideration in writing within 10 days of receiving the notice, SSA continues your payments at the same level until a decision is made. If you file between 10 and 60 days, your payment may temporarily drop but SSA will restart it once the reconsideration request is processed.11Social Security Administration. Understanding Supplemental Security Income Appeals Process
- Medical cessation (SSA says your disability ended): you must request both reconsideration and benefit continuation in writing within 10 days of receiving the notice. If the reconsideration is denied and you appeal to a hearing, you must again request continued benefits within 10 days of that denial.11Social Security Administration. Understanding Supplemental Security Income Appeals Process
SSA presumes you received the notice five days after the date printed on it, so in practice you often have about 15 days from the notice date to file. Treat it as urgent anyway. Miss the 10-day window and you can still appeal within 60 days, but you may go without payments for weeks or months while SSA reviews. One caution: if you receive continued payments during your appeal and lose, SSA can treat those payments as an overpayment and ask for the money back.
Getting Your Benefits Reinstated
If you resolve the underlying issue, whether by spending down excess resources, reporting corrected income, or turning in requested documents, SSA can reinstate your benefits without a new application as long as the suspension has lasted fewer than 12 consecutive months.1Social Security Administration. POMS SI 02301.205 – Suspension and Reestablishing Eligibility After 12 months in suspended status, your record is terminated and you have to start over.
Expedited Reinstatement After Work Ended Your SSI
If your SSI ended because you were earning too much to qualify, and your condition later worsens to the point where you can no longer work at the substantial gainful activity level, you may qualify for Expedited Reinstatement. You must request it within 60 months of your prior termination, your current impairment must be the same as or related to your original qualifying condition, and you must have stopped substantial work in the month you file.12Social Security Administration. Expedited Reinstatement (EXR) Overview While SSA evaluates the request, you can receive provisional benefit payments starting the month after you file.
Protecting Your Medicaid
For many recipients, Medicaid matters more than the cash payment. Whether your Medicaid survives a suspension depends on why SSI was suspended.
If your SSI stopped because you are earning too much from work, Section 1619(b) can keep your Medicaid coverage in place even with zero SSI cash. You must still meet the disability requirement, still meet all non-disability SSI rules, need Medicaid to continue working, and have gross earnings below your state’s threshold. Thresholds vary widely by state.13Social Security Administration. Continued Medicaid Eligibility – Section 1619(B)
If your SSI was suspended for a non-work reason such as excess resources or incarceration, Section 1619(b) does not apply. Medicaid eligibility in that situation depends on your state’s rules. Some states extend Medicaid independently of SSI, and others tie it directly to SSI status. Contact your state Medicaid office promptly if your SSI is suspended for any reason other than earnings.
A Note on Overpayments
Overpayments and suspensions often travel together, because the same change that pauses your benefit may mean earlier months were paid at too high a rate. If SSA sends you an overpayment notice, do not ignore it. You can ask for a lower repayment rate, and if the overpayment was not your fault and repaying would leave you unable to cover basic needs, you can file Form SSA-632-BK to request a waiver of the debt entirely.14Social Security Administration. SSA-632-BK – Request for Waiver of Overpayment Recovery
Where to Get Help
You do not need a lawyer to appeal an SSI suspension, but representation can help, especially with medical cessation or a tangled overpayment. SSA-approved representatives typically work on contingency, and under the fee agreement process the maximum fee is the lesser of 25 percent of your past-due benefits or $9,200.15Social Security Administration. Fee Agreements – Representing SSA Claimants Free legal help is available through Legal Aid organizations and disability rights groups in every state; these organizations handle SSI cases regularly and know the documentation SSA looks for.
