Why Did Venmo Take a Fee? Credit Cards, Instant Transfers, and More

If Venmo took a fee, the payment or action almost certainly fell into one of a short list of chargeable categories: a payment tagged as goods or services, a personal payment funded by credit card, an instant transfer to your bank, a check deposit, a cryptocurrency trade, or an out-of-network ATM withdrawal. Ordinary person-to-person payments funded from a bank account, debit card, or Venmo balance are free. One more deduction can look like a fee but isn’t: IRS backup withholding on business payments when your tax information is missing.

The Payment Was Tagged as Goods or Services

The most common surprise deduction happens on the receiving end. When a sender marks a payment as being for goods or services, or when money is sent to a registered business profile, Venmo takes a seller fee out of the amount before it reaches the recipient’s balance.

For a personal account receiving a goods-or-services payment, the rate is 2.99% with no flat charge. A $100 payment lands as $97.01.1Venmo. About Venmo Fees For a registered business profile, the rate is 1.9% plus $0.10 per standard in-app transaction, or 2.29% plus $0.09 for contactless payments through Tap to Pay.2Venmo. The tag also activates Purchase Protection, which can reimburse buyers if an item never arrives or is significantly different from what was described, and shields sellers from certain buyer claims. Personal transfers are not eligible for that coverage.3Venmo. Venmo Purchase Protection – Buyers and Sellers4Venmo. Purchase Protection Eligibility

One thing to know if you refund a buyer: the refund itself is free, but Venmo keeps the seller fee from the original payment.5Venmo. User Agreement

You Funded the Payment With a Credit Card

Sending money to a friend or family member with a linked credit card adds 3% on top of the amount. This one hits the sender, not the recipient. Send $200 and $206 posts to your card.1Venmo. About Venmo Fees

Venmo shows the charge before you confirm. Switching the funding source to a bank account, debit card, or your Venmo balance removes it — personal payments funded that way cost nothing.

You Chose an Instant Transfer to Your Bank

Moving money out of Venmo has two speeds, and only one is free.

An instant transfer to an eligible U.S. bank account or Visa/Mastercard debit card typically arrives within 30 minutes and costs 1.75% of the transfer amount, with a $0.25 minimum and a $25 cap.6Venmo. Instant Bank Transfer FAQ A $1,000 instant transfer costs $17.50.

A standard transfer to a verified checking account is free. It usually arrives within one business day and can take up to three, and weekends and bank holidays don’t count.7Venmo. Standard Bank Transfers FAQ

You Cashed a Check Through the App

Venmo’s in-app check deposit charges very different rates depending on the check.

  • Payroll and government checks with a pre-printed signature: 1% of the check amount, $5.00 minimum.
  • All other checks, including personal checks: 5% of the check amount, $5.00 minimum.1Venmo. About Venmo Fees

A $500 payroll check costs $5.00 to cash. A $500 personal check costs $25.00. If you have a linked bank account, depositing the check through your bank’s app and then transferring the money into Venmo avoids the fee.

You Bought or Sold Cryptocurrency

Crypto trades on Venmo carry a percentage fee that shrinks as the trade gets larger:

  • $1.00 to $74.99: 2.20%
  • $75.00 to $200.00: 2.00%
  • $200.01 to $1,000.00: 1.80%
  • Over $1,000: 1.50%1Venmo. About Venmo Fees

The fee is deducted at the time of the trade, so a buy nets you less crypto and a sell nets you less cash. Trades involving PayPal USD (PYUSD) are exempt.1Venmo. About Venmo Fees

You Used the Venmo Debit Card at an ATM

Purchases with the Venmo Debit Card, online or in store, don’t carry a fee. ATM withdrawals can.

  • In-network MoneyPass ATMs: free.1Venmo. About Venmo Fees
  • Out-of-network U.S. ATMs: $2.50 per withdrawal from Venmo, plus whatever the ATM operator charges.
  • International ATMs: $2.50 per withdrawal, even without currency conversion. Exchange rates are set by Mastercard.8Venmo. Venmo Debit Card FAQ

Cash back at the point of sale is free at merchants that accept Maestro or PULSE, which skips the ATM fee entirely.8Venmo. Venmo Debit Card FAQ

The Deduction Was Backup Withholding, Not a Fee

If a large chunk went missing from a business payment, look at your tax information in the app. When you receive payments for goods or services without a tax identification number on file, Venmo is required to withhold 24% and send it to the IRS as backup withholding.9Venmo. Venmo Tax FAQ That deduction can easily be mistaken for a fee.

Payments to business profiles are automatically treated as goods-or-services transactions, so adding tax details when the profile is created heads off the problem. Providing the information in the app stops the withholding going forward.

Separately, if your goods-or-services payments exceed $20,000 and 200 transactions in a calendar year, Venmo will issue a Form 1099-K to you and the IRS. The threshold reverted to $20,000 and 200 transactions under the One, Big, Beautiful Bill Act after a scheduled drop to $600 was reversed; both the dollar amount and the transaction count must be met.10Internal Revenue Service. IRS Issues FAQs on Form 1099-K Threshold Under the One, Big, Beautiful Bill A 1099-K itself doesn’t reduce your balance; it’s a reporting form.
