A “Federal Benefit Credit” on your bank statement is a direct deposit from the U.S. Treasury sent through the Automated Clearing House network, and today’s deposit could have come from any of several federal agencies that use that generic label. To find out why you received a federal benefit credit today, open the transaction in your bank’s online portal and look at the company name and description fields, which name the sending agency.

The deposit label your bank shows on the summary line rarely names the program. The real identifiers sit one click deeper, in the ACH fields your bank stores with every incoming transfer.
Company Name Codes
Every federal ACH deposit carries a “Company Name” field that identifies the sending agency. IRS payments appear as “IRS TREAS 310.” Social Security payments appear as “SSA TREAS 310.” The “310” at the end signals a standard federal benefit payment. If you see “449” in place of “310,” the Treasury reduced the payment through an offset, withholding part of the money to cover a delinquent debt you owe to another federal agency.1Bureau of the Fiscal Service. Company Entry Description
The “Company Entry Description” field is what tells you which program within that agency paid you. Common descriptions include:
- SOC SEC — Social Security retirement or disability
- SUPP SEC — Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
- VA BENEF — Veterans Affairs compensation or pension
- CIV SERV — Office of Personnel Management civil service annuity
- RR RET — Railroad Retirement Board annuity
- TAX REF — IRS tax refund
Those descriptions come from the Treasury’s Green Book, the reference guide banks use to process federal ACH payments.2TFX – Treasury. A Guide to Federal Government ACH Payments – Green Book The IRS uses TAX REF for refunds of a filed return and has historically used CHILDCTC for advance Child Tax Credit payments.3Taxpayer Advocate Service. If the Codes Still Don’t Tell You Enough
Every ACH transfer also carries a trace number, a unique identifier your bank or the paying agency can use to look up that specific payment. You will usually find it by clicking into the transaction detail view. Once you know which agency sent the money, contact that agency directly. Which Agencies Send These Payments
Knowing the range of possible senders makes it easier to guess the source before you even open the transaction.
Social Security Administration
The Social Security Administration is the largest source of Federal Benefit Credits. It pays monthly retirement and disability benefits under Title II of the Social Security Act to retirees, workers with qualifying disabilities, and certain dependents.6Social Security Administration. Part I – General Information SSI is a separate need-based program under Title XVI for people who are 65 or older, blind, or disabled and who have limited income and resources.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 42 USC Chapter 7 Subchapter XVI – Supplemental Security Income for Aged, Blind, and Disabled SSI follows a different schedule and different eligibility rules than Title II benefits.
Internal Revenue Service
The IRS uses the same ACH pipeline for income tax refunds, Earned Income Tax Credit payments, and Child Tax Credit payments. If the IRS owes you interest because a refund was delayed, that interest often arrives as a separate deposit.
Department of Veterans Affairs
The VA sends disability compensation, pensions, education benefits, and insurance proceeds through Treasury ACH. VA pensions go to wartime veterans who are permanently and totally disabled from conditions unrelated to their service and who meet income limits.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 38 USC 1521 – Veterans of a Period of War
OPM and the Railroad Retirement Board
If you or someone in your household retired from federal civilian service, the Office of Personnel Management issues monthly annuity payments that show up as Federal Benefit Credits. The Railroad Retirement Board deposits retirement annuities and unemployment or sickness benefits the same way.2TFX – Treasury. A Guide to Federal Government ACH Payments – Green Book
Why It Landed Today
Timing is a strong clue. Social Security retirement and disability payments arrive on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of the month depending on your date of birth, or on the 3rd of the month if you started receiving benefits before May 1997 or also receive SSI.9Social Security Administration. Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments 2026 SSI generally arrives on the 1st. VA compensation and pension and OPM civil service annuities are paid in arrears on the first business day of the following month. When the scheduled date falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the Treasury usually releases the funds on the last business day beforehand.
A deposit that shows up outside your normal payment window often points to a retroactive payment. When a new claim is approved, the agency pays for the months between your application date and the approval decision. Social Security retirement claims can be paid retroactively for up to six months before the filing date, and disability claims for up to twelve months.10Social Security Administration. Social Security Handbook – 1513 Retroactive Effect of Application A benefit recalculation or the resolution of an appeal can also produce a one-time make-up deposit. And a payment reduced by an offset, marked with the “449” suffix, may look unfamiliar simply because the amount is smaller than usual.
What to Do if the Payment Looks Like a Mistake
If you cannot connect the deposit to any benefit you receive or claim you filed, move quickly. Contact the agency identified in the transaction codes. Then call your bank and explain the situation. The bank can initiate a return of the ACH credit to the Treasury.
If the agency later determines you were overpaid, it will send a written notice explaining the reason and amount. Federal agencies can recover overpayments by reducing your future benefits, and for non-tax debts they can pursue administrative wage garnishment of up to 15 percent of disposable earnings.11U.S. Department of Labor. Fact Sheet 30 – Wage Garnishment Protections of the Consumer Credit Protection Act You will not always have to pay it back. For Social Security and SSI overpayments, you can request a waiver if the overpayment was not your fault and repayment would cause financial hardship. The request goes on Form SSA-632-BK, submitted online, by fax, or by mail to your local Social Security office.12Social Security Administration. Ask Us to Waive an Overpayment Keep records of every call, letter, and receipt while the issue is open.
Two Things Worth Knowing About the Money
Not every Federal Benefit Credit is taxable. VA disability compensation and pension payments are excluded from gross income and are not reported on your federal return.13Internal Revenue Service. Veterans Tax Information and Services SSI is not taxable either.14Internal Revenue Service. Social Security Income Standard Social Security retirement and disability benefits can be partially taxable, with up to 50 or 85 percent included in income once your combined income exceeds statutory thresholds that are not adjusted for inflation.15Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 86 – Social Security and Tier 1 Railroad Retirement Benefits A tax refund itself is not income, but interest the IRS paid on a delayed refund is.
If a creditor tries to garnish your account, federal benefit deposits get automatic protection. Under 31 CFR Part 212, your bank must review the account within two business days of receiving a garnishment order and identify federal benefit deposits made in the prior two months. The lesser of that two-month total or your current balance is your protected amount, and the bank cannot freeze it.16eCFR. 31 CFR 212.5 – Account Review You do not need to file paperwork to claim the protection.
