If you’re wondering why your student loans are in deferment, the short answer is that your servicer received information showing you qualify for a temporary pause — most often because you went back to school, applied for a new repayment plan, entered military or Peace Corps service, began cancer treatment, or requested relief for unemployment or hardship. Some of these happen automatically without any action from you. Others only exist because you asked. Which one applies changes what it’s costing you and whether you should keep it in place.
You Went Back to School
This is by far the most common reason loans quietly stop billing. If you’re enrolled at least half-time, your school reports your status to the Department of Education, and once your servicer confirms it, an in-school deferment is applied without any paperwork from you.1eCFR. 34 CFR 685.204 – Deferment The servicer must notify you when it grants an automatic deferment and let you cancel it if you’d rather keep paying.2eCFR. 34 CFR 682.210 – Deferment
The pause lasts as long as you stay enrolled at least half-time. Status is pulled from the National Student Loan Data System and refreshes regularly, so the deferment usually renews each semester on its own.2eCFR. 34 CFR 682.210 – Deferment
A separate Graduate Fellowship Deferment exists for borrowers in approved fellowships that provide enough support for full-time study for at least six months, provided you already hold a bachelor’s degree.3Federal Student Aid. Graduate Fellowship Deferment Request
You Applied for a New Repayment Plan or Consolidation
When you apply for an income-driven repayment plan or consolidate your loans, your servicer often places your account on a temporary hold so you aren’t billed incorrectly while the change processes. Technically this is an administrative forbearance rather than a deferment, but if your dashboard just says “paused,” it can look identical to one.4MOHELA – Federal Student Aid. Changes to the SAVE Administrative Forbearance
Processing usually finishes within 60 days. If you applied for a new plan and don’t hear back inside that window, you’ll generally be returned to your previous plan.4MOHELA – Federal Student Aid. Changes to the SAVE Administrative Forbearance Public Service Loan Forgiveness verification can trigger the same kind of hold while your employer and qualifying months are confirmed.
The label matters because interest accrues on every loan type during forbearance, including subsidized ones. If your pause is administrative, check your servicer’s dashboard to confirm the exact status so you know whether interest is building.
Your Servicer Had to Grant It
Federal law requires servicers to grant deferment for certain circumstances once eligibility is established. If one of these fits your life right now, the deferment was almost certainly set up because you or someone acting for you submitted the request, or because your situation was flagged through a related program.
- Active-duty military service or being called up for a national emergency. The three-year cap that applies to unemployment deferment does not apply here.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 20 USC 1078 – Federal Payments to Reduce Student Interest Costs
- Peace Corps service, for the length of your term. Economic hardship deferment may also apply, and Perkins Loan borrowers may qualify for partial cancellation of 15 to 70 percent.6U.S. Department of Education. Peace Corps and Repayment of Your Federal Student Loans

You Requested Hardship or Unemployment Relief
Unlike the automatic triggers, unemployment and economic hardship deferments require you to apply and send in documentation. If your loans are in one of these, you (or someone helping you) submitted paperwork.
Unemployment deferment requires you to be actively seeking but unable to find full-time work, and to register with a public or private employment agency if one exists within 50 miles of you. School placement offices, temp agencies, and job-search websites don’t count. Each period lasts up to six months for Direct Loan and FFEL borrowers, with a 36-month cumulative cap.8Federal Student Aid. Unemployment Deferment Request
Economic hardship deferment is approved through several paths: receiving federal or state public assistance such as SSI or SNAP, serving as a Peace Corps volunteer, or meeting income tests tied to the federal minimum wage and poverty guidelines. One test looks at whether your full-time monthly income falls below the poverty line for a family of two in your state regardless of your actual household size; another checks whether your student loan payments eat up 20 percent or more of your monthly income.9Federal Student Aid. Economic Hardship Deferment Request Benefit award letters or tax records are required.
What Deferment Is Actually Costing You
Deferment pauses your bill. It does not always pause interest. On subsidized loans, the government pays the interest during deferment, so the balance you had going in is the balance you’ll have coming out. On unsubsidized loans, interest keeps accruing at your loan’s rate and is yours to deal with. If you don’t pay it as it accrues, the unpaid interest gets added to your principal when the deferment ends.10Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Is Student Loan Deferment
That addition is called capitalization, and it’s where the real cost shows up. The fixed rate on undergraduate Direct Loans for 2025–2026 is 6.39 percent; on graduate unsubsidized loans it’s 7.94 percent.11Federal Student Aid Knowledge Center. Interest Rates for Direct Loans First Disbursed Between July 1, 2025, and June 30, 2026 A $30,000 unsubsidized balance at 6.39 percent accrues roughly $1,917 over a 12-month deferment. Once that capitalizes, you pay interest on the larger balance for the rest of the loan.
You can make voluntary interest payments during deferment without losing the deferment itself. Even covering just the monthly interest prevents capitalization.
What Deferment Is Doing to Your Forgiveness Clock
Months spent in deferment generally do not count toward the 120 qualifying payments for Public Service Loan Forgiveness. If you work for a qualifying employer while your loans sit in deferment, those months don’t move you closer to forgiveness. Borrowers on the PSLF track who return to school should ask their servicer to cancel the automatic in-school deferment so payments resume and keep counting.
The same gap applies to income-driven repayment forgiveness. Deferment months typically don’t credit toward the 20 or 25 years required for IDR discharge. The Department of Education’s one-time IDR adjustment did credit certain past deferment and forbearance periods, but that was a limited correction rather than ongoing policy.
A $0 payment on an IDR plan counts toward forgiveness. A month in deferment does not. If you’re on a forgiveness path, that distinction is the whole ballgame.
How to Cancel the Deferment If You’d Rather Pay
Contact your servicer and explicitly ask to cancel the deferment. Your servicer is required to tell you about this option when it grants an automatic deferment, but the notification is easy to overlook.2eCFR. 34 CFR 682.210 – Deferment You can usually make the request through the online portal or by phone. A new billing statement with your next due date should follow.
Watch your account dashboard to confirm the status actually changed. If two weeks go by and it still shows “in deferment,” follow up — servicer backlogs are common, and a stuck status can mean missed payments you intended to make. Before canceling, confirm you’re already enrolled in the repayment plan you want. If you’re pursuing PSLF, you need to be on an income-driven plan so your $0 or low payments count. Canceling deferment without that step first can produce a bill you weren’t ready for.
If These Are Private Loans, the Rules Are Different
Everything above applies to federal student loans. Private lenders are not required to offer deferment at all. Whether your private loans can be deferred, and on what terms, depends on your loan contract and the lender’s policies.12Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Is Forbearance or Deferment Available for Private Student Loans Some private lenders offer limited hardship forbearance, usually with less generous terms than federal programs and with interest continuing to accrue. If your private loans are in deferment and you don’t know why, call the lender; there is no federal database tracking private loan statuses.
Protecting Your Credit While the Status Changes
A properly applied deferment should not hurt your credit. With no payment due, your servicer reports the account as current. The risk sits in the transition. If a payment was due before the deferment was applied and processing took a few weeks, your account could show delinquent for that gap. Servicers report delinquency once a loan is 90 or more days past due, and that mark stays on your credit report for seven years.13MOHELA – Federal Student Aid. Credit Reporting
Even if the delinquency is later resolved with a backdated deferment, the negative reporting from the period when it was accurate generally won’t be removed.13MOHELA – Federal Student Aid. Credit Reporting Apply for deferment before you miss a payment, not after.
