Red Lobster is owned by RL Investor Holdings LLC, a holding company formed by Fortress Investment Group together with two co-investors, TCW Private Credit and Blue Torch Capital. Fortress led the group’s acquisition of the chain out of Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September 2024 using a credit bid valued at $376 million.1Fortress. Fortress Investment Group Is the Controlling Owner
Fortress Investment Group holds the dominant equity position inside RL Investor Holdings LLC and makes the key financial decisions for the chain. The New York-based firm manages roughly $55 billion in assets across credit, real estate, and private equity strategies.2Fortress Investment Group. About Fortress It created RL Investor Holdings specifically to acquire Red Lobster.1Fortress. Red Lobster Exits Bankruptcy; Damola Adamolekun Appointed CEO
Fortress was already one of Red Lobster’s primary lenders before the bankruptcy. Rather than lining up as a creditor to recover cash, the firm converted the debt Red Lobster owed it into an ownership stake through a credit bid. The money Red Lobster already owed became the purchase price, and Fortress swapped the role of lender for the role of owner. That approach cleared hundreds of millions in prior liabilities off the company’s books and handed Fortress control of the brand, its intellectual property, and its remaining restaurants.
Fortress focuses heavily on distressed companies that need financial and operational overhauls. As majority equity holder, it approves large capital expenditures, negotiates the biggest contracts, and appoints executive leadership.
The Two Co-Investors: TCW Private Credit and Blue Torch Capital
Fortress did not buy Red Lobster alone. TCW Private Credit and Blue Torch Capital came in as co-investors and hold minority equity stakes in RL Investor Holdings LLC.1Fortress. Red Lobster Exits Bankruptcy; Damola Adamolekun Appointed CEO
TCW Private Credit is an arm of the broader TCW Group, a global asset management firm. Blue Torch Capital is a middle-market direct lender founded in 2017 that specializes in providing credit to companies dealing with operational challenges or financial distress. Both firms contributed capital to the acquisition vehicle, spreading the financial risk of turning the chain around and giving Red Lobster the liquidity it needs to keep operating.
These partners are financial backers, not restaurant operators. They don’t run kitchens or set menu prices. Their focus is the return on their investment and the health of Red Lobster’s balance sheet, with day-to-day decisions left to the executive team Fortress installed.
Who Runs Red Lobster Day-to-Day
Fortress appointed Damola Adamolekun as CEO of Red Lobster. Adamolekun, 36 at the time of the appointment, previously served as CEO of P.F. Chang’s, where he led a remodel-and-revamp strategy after stepping into the role during the COVID-19 pandemic.3Fortress. The investment group exercises control through a board of directors that sets financial targets and performance benchmarks. Adamolekun and his team handle operations, including hiring, supply chain management, and marketing. The board retains the authority to change leadership if the turnaround falls short. That split is standard for private equity-backed companies: the sponsors set the destination, and the management team figures out how to get there.
How Red Lobster Ended Up With New Owners
Red Lobster filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May 2024. Within days, the chain abruptly closed 99 locations across 28 states, and court filings identified more than 200 additional leases flagged as money-losers if their terms weren’t renegotiated. The filing gave the company breathing room to reject unprofitable leases and restructure its debts while continuing to operate.
Fortress entered the process as a stalking horse bidder, setting the baseline offer any competing buyer would have to beat. No higher bid materialized, and the court approved the Fortress-led acquisition. The $376 million purchase price was structured primarily as a credit bid, with Fortress and its partners converting debt owed to them into equity rather than collecting cash repayment. The transaction closed in September 2024, and Red Lobster exited bankruptcy as an independent, privately held company.1Fortress. Red Lobster Exits Bankruptcy; Damola Adamolekun Appointed CEO
At the time of the exit, Red Lobster had 545 restaurant locations across 44 U.S. states and four Canadian provinces.4PR Newswire. Previous Owners of Red Lobster
The chain has changed hands four times since it was founded in 1968. The current owners are the most recent step in a long sequence.
- General Mills and later Darden Restaurants (1968–2014) grew Red Lobster into the largest seafood restaurant chain in the world. Darden spun off the chain in 2014.
- Golden Gate Capital (2014–2020) paid roughly $2.1 billion for Red Lobster and immediately recouped $1.5 billion by selling its real estate in a sale-leaseback, leaving the restaurants with rent obligations they had not carried before.
- Thai Union Group (2020–2024), a publicly traded seafood supplier based in Thailand, first invested $575 million in 2016 and later became the controlling owner. It moved to divest in 2024 after recording a roughly $510 million impairment charge on its Red Lobster investment.
- RL Investor Holdings LLC (2024–present), the Fortress-led group described above, is the current owner.
