Who Gets Social Security on the 3rd of the Month?

Social Security pays benefits on the 3rd of the month to five main groups: anyone who filed a claim before May 1, 1997; anyone who also receives Supplemental Security Income; anyone whose state pays their Medicare premiums through a buy-in program; anyone living outside the United States; and anyone sharing an earnings record with a person in one of those categories. A few narrower situations, including garnished payments and tax levy cases, also fall on the 3rd.1Social Security Administration. SSA Handbook 121 – Payment Dates

The Full List of Categories Paid on the 3rd

The SSA Handbook sets out every situation that qualifies for the 3rd-of-the-month schedule:

  • Anyone whose benefits began based on a claim filed before May 1, 1997.
  • Anyone who receives both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income.
  • Anyone whose income counts toward an SSI beneficiary’s eligibility determination.
  • Anyone whose state pays their Medicare premiums.
  • Anyone living outside the United States.
  • Anyone receiving payments through garnishment, a tax levy, or the critical payment system.
  • Anyone who was on the 3rd-of-the-month schedule on one record and became entitled on a different record without a break.
  • Anyone receiving benefits on the same earnings record as a person in any of the categories above.1Social Security Administration. SSA Handbook 121 – Payment Dates

The Same-Record Rule

The last item on that list matters more than it might look. If even one person collecting on a particular worker’s earnings record qualifies for the 3rd, every person on that record moves to the 3rd. That includes a spouse or child whose own situation would otherwise put them on a Wednesday. The SSA sends written notice when it makes this change.2eCFR. 20 CFR 404.1807 – Monthly Payment Day

Beneficiaries Who Filed Before May 1997

Before June 1997, every Social Security recipient was paid on the 3rd. The SSA introduced the staggered Wednesday schedule to spread processing across the banking system, and it applied the change only to new claims filed on or after May 1, 1997. Anyone already receiving benefits stayed on the original cycle.3Social Security Administration. Paying Monthly Benefits

Under 20 C.F.R. ยง 404.1807, if any person became entitled on a worker’s earnings record based on a claim filed before that cutoff, the entire record stays on the 3rd. A new spouse claiming years later on that same record also gets the 3rd.2eCFR. 20 CFR 404.1807 – Monthly Payment Day

Concurrent Social Security and SSI Recipients

If you qualify for both Social Security and SSI, you receive two separate payments each month. SSI arrives on the 1st because it is funded through general tax revenue rather than the Social Security trust funds. Your Social Security payment then arrives on the 3rd.4Social Security Administration. Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments 2026

The two dates follow their own holiday rules independently. When one shifts because of a weekend or holiday, the other does not move with it. And once anyone on a worker’s earnings record begins receiving SSI, every beneficiary on that record moves to the 3rd.2eCFR. 20 CFR 404.1807 – Monthly Payment Day

State Medicare Premium Buy-In

Some states pay Medicare Part B premiums for low-income residents through Medicare Savings Programs. The federal name for the arrangement is a state buy-in. When a state takes over your premium, the SSA stops deducting it from your monthly check and shifts your remaining Social Security payment to the 3rd.1Social Security Administration. SSA Handbook 121 – Payment Dates

All 50 states and the District of Columbia have buy-in agreements with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. These programs cover premiums for people eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid.5Social Security Administration. POMS HI 00815.001 – State Payment of Medicare Premiums (Buy-In Program)

Beneficiaries Living Abroad

If you live outside the United States, your Social Security payment falls on the 3rd of each month no matter when you filed or when the insured worker was born. The SSA classifies all international payments this way.6Social Security Administration. POMS GN 02402.002 – Direct Deposit for Title II and Title XVI

The rule holds regardless of country or benefit type, though the SSA cannot send payments to certain countries because of U.S. sanctions or other restrictions.7Social Security Administration. Country List 1 – International Programs Paper checks mailed overseas can arrive on different days from month to month, so the SSA encourages international direct deposit where it is available.8Social Security Administration. Your Payments While You Are Outside the United States

Same-record rule applies. If one beneficiary on the record lives abroad, everyone on that record moves to the 3rd, including those still living in the U.S.2eCFR. 20 CFR 404.1807 – Monthly Payment Day

Everyone Else: The Wednesday Schedule

If none of the categories above fit you and your claim was filed on or after May 1, 1997, your payment date depends on the birth date of the worker whose earnings record your benefits come from:

  • Born the 1st through the 10th: second Wednesday.
  • Born the 11th through the 20th: third Wednesday.
  • Born the 21st through the 31st: fourth Wednesday.

If you collect on someone else’s record as a spouse or surviving child, the date follows the worker’s birthday, not yours.3Social Security Administration. Paying Monthly Benefits

You cannot request a different payment date. The SSA does not offer hardship transfers between cycles. Your date changes only if you or someone on your record meets one of the 3rd-of-the-month conditions, such as starting SSI or moving abroad.9Social Security Administration. When the 3rd Falls on a Weekend or Holiday

If the 3rd lands on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday, the SSA pays you on the last preceding business day that is not itself a holiday. A Sunday 3rd means Friday the 1st or 2nd. A Saturday 3rd also means the preceding Friday, unless that Friday is a federal holiday, in which case payment moves to Thursday.1Social Security Administration. SSA Handbook 121 – Payment Dates

2026 Adjusted Dates

Four months require an adjustment in 2026:4Social Security Administration. Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments 2026

  • January 2026: the 3rd is a Saturday, so payment moves to Friday, January 2.
  • May 2026: the 3rd is a Sunday, so payment moves to Friday, May 1.
  • July 2026: the 3rd is a Friday but is the observed federal holiday for Independence Day, so payment moves to Thursday, July 2.
  • October 2026: the 3rd is a Saturday, so payment moves to Friday, October 2.
