If you are asking who can help fix my credit, there are five kinds of help worth knowing about: nonprofit credit counselors, for-profit credit repair companies, consumer law attorneys, HUD-approved housing counselors, and the original creditors who reported the negative items in the first place. Which one fits depends on whether your problem is errors on the report, debt you cannot manage, illegal conduct by a collector, a specific homeownership goal, or a single late payment you would like removed. Before you pay anyone, know this: federal law lets you dispute credit report errors directly with the bureaus for free, and the FTC has stated that anything a credit repair company can legally do, you can do yourself at no cost.1Federal Trade Commission. Pull your reports before you hire anyone. All three major bureaus offer free weekly reports through AnnualCreditReport.com, and Equifax provides six additional free reports per year through 2026.2Federal Trade Commission. Free Credit Reports Read each report line by line. Look for accounts you don’t recognize, incorrect balances, duplicate entries, and payments marked late that you made on time.
If you find an error, file a dispute directly with the bureau reporting it. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, the bureau must investigate free of charge and resolve the dispute within 30 days, with up to 15 extra days if you send additional documents during the investigation.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681i – Procedure in Case of Disputed Accuracy Within five business days of getting your dispute, the bureau must notify the company that furnished the information, and that company has to investigate too. If the item cannot be verified, it must be deleted. If the dispute does not go your way, you have the right to add a brief statement of up to 100 words to your file explaining your side, and that statement must appear on future reports.
This is the same legal mechanism paid credit repair companies use. Where paid help earns its fee is in complex disputes, legal violations, or debt loads that need structural solutions.
Nonprofit Credit Counseling Organizations
Nonprofit credit counselors work on the behavioral side: budgeting, debt management, and financial education. Agencies affiliated with the National Foundation for Credit Counseling must earn and maintain accreditation from the Council on Accreditation, which sets standards for how they handle client funds and deliver services.4National Foundation for Credit Counseling. Accreditation Standards
A counselor typically starts by reviewing your income, expenses, and debts to build a monthly budget. If the debt load is manageable but the interest rates are the real problem, the agency may recommend a debt management plan. The agency negotiates reduced interest rates with your creditors, and you make one monthly payment to the agency, which distributes the money on a schedule. These plans usually run three to five years.
Counseling organizations that qualify as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) must tailor services to each client, charge reasonable fees with waivers for people who cannot pay, and refuse no one based on ability to pay or willingness to enroll in a debt management plan.5Internal Revenue Service. Credit Counseling Legislation New Criteria for Exemption Fees are modest. Setup and monthly maintenance charges vary by state, typically capped in the range of $35 to $75 per month.
A common worry is whether enrolling in a debt management plan hurts your score. FICO’s scoring model does not treat a debt management plan notation as negative. What matters is consistent, on-time payments during the plan. Some creditors add a notation that you are in a plan, but it comes off once the plan is completed.
For-Profit Credit Repair Companies
Commercial credit repair firms specialize in the technical work of challenging negative items. They look for reporting errors an average consumer might miss: duplicate accounts, balances still reported after discharge, accounts misattributed because of similar names, or items that should have aged off. Most negative information has to come off after seven years, and bankruptcies after ten.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c – Requirements Relating to Information Contained in Consumer Reports
These companies operate under the Credit Repair Organizations Act, which imposes three protections you should know.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1679 – Findings and Purposes A company cannot charge you a dollar until it has fully performed the service it promised.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1679b – Prohibited Practices You must receive a written contract explaining the services, total cost, and your legal rights before any work begins. And you can cancel the contract for any reason, without penalty, before midnight of the third business day after you sign it.9Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1679e – Right to Cancel Contract
When credit repair is sold by phone, the Telemarketing Sales Rule adds another layer: the company cannot collect payment until the timeframe it promised has passed and it can show you a credit report issued more than six months after the improvement was supposedly achieved.10Federal Trade Commission. Complying With the Telemarketing Sales Rule That six-month window exists because some deleted items reappear.
Monthly fees generally run from about $50 to $150, sometimes with a separate setup charge. The range reflects how aggressively companies dispute and how many bureaus they work with.
How to Spot a Credit Repair Scam
People searching for credit help are exactly the people scammers target. The FTC flags several behaviors as warning signs.11Federal Trade Commission. Spot the Scams When Fixing Your Credit Demanding payment upfront is illegal. Promising to remove accurate, current negative information is impossible; no one can legally do it. Telling you to dispute everything creates frivolous filings the bureaus can and do reject. Asking you to apply for credit using a different Social Security number or to fabricate information on an application is identity fraud, and if you go along with it, you are the one committing the crime. Skipping the written contract means no cancellation rights and no paper trail.
If a credit repair company breaks these rules, you can complain to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau at consumerfinance.gov or report the company to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
Consumer Law and Bankruptcy Attorneys
When errors survive the dispute process, or when creditors and collectors are breaking the law, an attorney can take the fight to court. This is the sharpest option, and it is the one that actually forces compliance.
Fair Credit Reporting Act Claims
If a bureau or creditor fails to correct inaccurate information after a proper dispute, you can sue under the FCRA. For willful violations, a court can award actual damages or statutory damages between $100 and $1,000, plus attorney’s fees and court costs.12Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681n – Civil Liability for Willful Noncompliance For negligent violations, you can recover actual damages plus attorney’s fees.13Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681o – Civil Liability for Negligent Noncompliance The fee-shifting is what makes these cases economically viable for consumers, and it is why lawyers will take strong FCRA cases on contingency.
You must file within two years of discovering the violation or five years after it occurred, whichever comes first.14Federal Trade Commission. Fair Credit Reporting Act Waiting too long can extinguish the claim entirely.
Fair Debt Collection Practices Act Claims
Attorneys also handle illegal collection tactics under the FDCPA.15Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1692 – Congressional Findings and Declaration of Purpose Calls at unreasonable hours, misrepresenting the amount you owe, empty threats of legal action, and contact after a written stop request all violate the law. A court can award actual damages plus additional damages of up to $1,000 per case, along with attorney’s fees and court costs.16Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1692k – Civil Liability The $1,000 cap is per lawsuit, not per violation, so attorneys typically consolidate multiple violations into a single stronger case.
Bankruptcy
When the real problem is not errors but genuinely unmanageable debt, bankruptcy attorneys handle Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 filings. Chapter 7 liquidates eligible assets to discharge most debts relatively quickly. Chapter 13 creates a court-supervised repayment plan lasting three to five years, with remaining qualifying debts discharged at the end.17United States Courts. Discharge in Bankruptcy – Bankruptcy Basics A bankruptcy stays on your credit report for up to ten years, so it is a last resort, but for people drowning in debt it can be the fastest path to rebuilding.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c – Requirements Relating to Information Contained in Consumer Reports Attorney fees for a Chapter 7 case typically run from roughly $800 to $4,000 depending on complexity and location.
HUD-Approved Housing Counselors
If your credit goal is tied to buying a home or saving one from foreclosure, HUD-approved housing counselors offer targeted help. These professionals are certified by the Department of Housing and Urban Development and operate under federal regulations that define what they can cover, including credit repair, budgeting, down payment assistance, and fair lending.18eCFR. 24 CFR Part 214 – Housing Counseling Program
Their strength is translating credit scores into mortgage eligibility. For an FHA loan with a 3.5% down payment, you need a minimum FICO score of 580; scores between 500 and 579 require 10% down. A HUD counselor can look at your report and map out which items are dragging your score below the threshold, then help you build an action plan. If you already own a home and are struggling with payments, they can also facilitate conversations with your servicer about loan modifications or other foreclosure alternatives.
Most HUD counseling services are free, funded by federal grants. You can find an approved counselor at hud.gov/findacounselor. Because these counselors are federally certified and grant-funded, they have no financial incentive to steer you toward products you don’t need.
Negotiating Directly With Your Creditors
Sometimes the most useful conversation is with the company that reported the negative item. Two approaches work, and neither requires hiring anyone.
A goodwill request asks the creditor to remove a late-payment mark as a courtesy. You are not disputing accuracy. You are acknowledging the lateness and asking for a break. This works best when the late payment was a one-time event, you have been current ever since, and you have a reasonable explanation. Write a short, polite letter. Some creditors let frontline employees approve these requests; others do not. The worst answer is no.
A pay-for-delete arrangement is different. You offer to pay a delinquent balance in exchange for the creditor removing the account from your report entirely. This is more common with collection agencies than with original creditors. The major bureaus officially discourage the practice because it compromises data accuracy, and there is no guarantee a bureau will honor the deletion even if the creditor agrees. If you go this route, get the agreement in writing before you send money. A verbal promise from a collections agent is worth nothing once your check clears.
Either way, a successful removal can move your score meaningfully. Most negative items stay on your report for seven years from the date of first delinquency.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c – Requirements Relating to Information Contained in Consumer Reports Getting one recent item removed early can produce a noticeable jump.
The Tax Bill That Can Follow a Debt Settlement
One warning before you settle anything. If a creditor or collection agency accepts less than the full balance, the IRS generally treats the forgiven portion as taxable income.19Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 431, Canceled Debt – Is It Taxable or Not? The creditor will typically send you a Form 1099-C, and you are expected to include the amount on your return for the year of cancellation.
Owing $15,000 and settling for $9,000 could add $6,000 to your taxable income that year. Depending on your bracket, that could mean a surprise tax bill of $1,000 or more.
There are exceptions. If you were insolvent when the debt was canceled, meaning your total liabilities exceeded the fair market value of your assets, you can exclude some or all of the canceled amount from income, limited to the amount by which you were insolvent. You claim the exclusion by filing IRS Form 982 with your return.20IRS.gov. Instructions for Form 982 Debt discharged in a Title 11 bankruptcy case is also excluded.19Internal Revenue Service.
