Which Cars Have £30 a Year Road Tax in the UK?

The cheap road tax band people still call “£30 a year” now costs £35. It applies to cars first registered between 1 March 2001 and 31 March 2017 with official CO2 emissions of 111 to 120 g/km, which puts them in Band C of the old vehicle excise duty system.1GOV.UK. Vehicle Tax Rates – Cars Registered Between 1 March 2001 and 31 March 2017 The £30 figure quoted on older forums and buying guides is simply the previous rate before the most recent uprating. The list of qualifying cars is dominated by small petrol hatchbacks and a handful of efficient diesels from that 16-year window.

The Two Conditions a Car Must Meet

Band C is not about the make or model. It is about two facts on the V5C log book.

The first is the registration date. The car must have been first registered on or after 1 March 2001 and before 1 April 2017. Cars registered before March 2001 are taxed by engine size instead, and cars registered from April 2017 onward use a completely different system with a flat standard rate.2UK Parliament. Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) That registration date locks the car into the banding system for the rest of its life.

The second is the official CO2 figure. It has to fall between 111 and 120 g/km. That is a narrow 10 g/km window, and it means seemingly identical cars can land in different bands depending on the engine, gearbox, or trim level. The number printed on the V5C is the one that decides it.

Cars That Commonly Fall in Band C

Most Band C cars are small hatchbacks from roughly 2004 to early 2017, with a few larger models sneaking in on efficient diesel engines.

The Ford Fiesta is the most common Band C car on UK roads. Petrol Fiestas from around 2013 to 2017 in Zetec and Titanium trims with the smaller turbo engines typically land at 114 to 120 g/km. Earlier diesel Fiestas with TDCi engines, roughly 2004 to 2009, also frequently sit at 116 to 119 g/km.

The Vauxhall Corsa is almost as common in the band. Petrol ecoFLEX models from 2015 to 2017 cluster around 111 to 120 g/km, most often in Energy, Design, and SE trims.

The Volkswagen Golf appears less often. Golf engines tend to produce slightly higher emissions, but certain 1.6 TDI diesel variants from 2009 to 2016 hit 119 g/km. Many petrol Golfs from the same years sit in Band D or higher.

Other cars that regularly turn up in Band C include some Toyota Yaris diesels, certain Peugeot 208 variants, and select MINI hatchbacks with smaller engines. The pattern is consistent: you need a small or unusually efficient engine to keep the official figure below 121 g/km.

Why 120 g/km Is a Cliff Edge

Band C’s £35 rate looks even better once you see what happens the moment a car crosses 120 g/km:1GOV.UK. Vehicle Tax Rates – Cars Registered Between 1 March 2001 and 31 March 2017

  • Band A, up to 100 g/km: £20 per year
  • Band B, 101 to 110 g/km: £20 per year
  • Band C, 111 to 120 g/km: £35 per year
  • Band D, 121 to 130 g/km: £170 per year
  • Band E, 131 to 140 g/km: £200 per year

A car producing one gram more CO2 per kilometre than the Band C ceiling costs nearly five times as much to tax. That £135 gap repeats every year the car is on the road. It is why used-car buyers hunting for low tax stay fixated on the 120 g/km line, and why two versions of the same model, mechanically almost identical, can be worth chasing or avoiding on the tax cost alone.

How to Confirm a Specific Car’s Band Before You Buy

Do not trust brochures, magazine reviews, or classified listings for the CO2 figure. Minor specification changes between model years can shift a car across a band boundary. Only the V5C log book for the specific vehicle is authoritative.

Ask the seller to show you the CO2 emissions figure printed on the log book. If it reads between 111 and 120 g/km, and the first registration date sits inside the 2001 to 2017 window, the car is Band C and costs £35 a year.

You can also confirm the car’s current tax status through the GOV.UK vehicle tax check by entering the registration number.3GOV.UK. Check if a Vehicle is Taxed Seeing the actual rate breakdown, however, requires the 11-digit reference number from the V5C, which the seller must provide.

Paying at the Band C Rate

Band C tax is £35 as a single annual lump sum, which is the cheapest way to pay.1GOV.UK. Vehicle Tax Rates – Cars Registered Between 1 March 2001 and 31 March 2017 Spreading the cost across 12 monthly direct debit instalments adds a 5% surcharge, bringing the yearly total to £36.75.4GOV.UK. Vehicle Tax Direct Debit Payments Paying the full year in one go by direct debit avoids the surcharge.

Six-monthly payments are not available at this rate. That option only opens up for bands costing £170 or more a year. So at Band C the practical choice is one annual payment or 12 monthly ones.

What Doesn’t Qualify, and What’s Cheaper Still

A newer car with the same emissions does not get the Band C rate. If a vehicle was first registered on or after 1 April 2017, the banding system does not apply at all. After a first-year charge based on emissions, it moves to a flat standard rate of £200 per year regardless of how clean it is.5GOV.UK. Vehicle Tax Rates – Cars Registered on or After 1 April 2017 A 2018 Fiesta with the same emissions figure as a 2016 Fiesta costs £200 a year rather than £35.

Two categories beat £35. Electric cars registered between 1 March 2001 and 31 March 2017 fall into Band A at £20 a year, though very few fully electric cars were on sale during that window.6GOV.UK. Drivers receiving certain mobility benefits can also claim a full exemption on one vehicle. Qualifying benefits include the higher or enhanced rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance, Personal Independence Payment, Adult Disability Payment, Armed Forces Independence Payment, and War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement.8DVLA.
