Where’s My Amended Return? Tool, Transcripts, and Codes

The IRS “Where’s My Amended Return?” tool at irs.gov is the fastest way to check the status of a Form 1040-X. You can look starting about three weeks after you file, and the tool will show one of three statuses: Received, Adjusted, or Completed. Processing runs 8 to 12 weeks on average, and up to 16 in some cases. If you want more detail than the tool provides, your IRS tax account transcript shows the internal transaction codes that reveal exactly when your amendment posted, whether a notice went out, and when a refund was approved.1Internal Revenue Service. How to Use the Where’s My Amended Return Tool

The tool is free, runs around the clock, and covers the current tax year plus up to three prior years. It works whether you filed on paper or electronically. Wait at least three weeks after filing before you check; the amendment won’t appear in the system before then no matter how it was submitted.1Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Amended Return

You need three pieces of information to sign in:

  • The Social Security number of the primary taxpayer on the return.
  • The primary taxpayer’s date of birth.
  • The ZIP code listed on the amended return, which may differ from your original filing if you moved.

What the Three Statuses Mean

The tool reports one of three statuses as your amendment moves through the pipeline:2Internal Revenue Service. Amended Return Frequently Asked Questions

  • Received. The IRS has logged your amended return and it is in the processing queue. It has not necessarily been assigned to a reviewer.
  • Adjusted. The IRS made a change to your account. The adjustment may result in a refund, a balance due, or no change to what you owe.
  • Completed. Processing is finished. Any correspondence about the outcome will come to you by mail.

What the tool will not do is explain why processing is taking longer than expected, tell you what a reviewer is looking at, or give you a projected completion date. It also does not appear in the IRS2Go mobile app, so the website is the only self-service option; a phone call is the other.

When the three-status tool doesn’t tell you enough, a tax account transcript will. The Transaction Codes That Matter for an Amendment

Tax account transcripts use three-digit transaction codes to record what happened and when. Four are worth knowing when you’re tracking a 1040-X:6Internal Revenue Service. 6209 Section 8 Master File Codes

  • Code 977. Your Form 1040-X has been posted to the IRS master file. The date next to the code shows when the IRS officially recorded the amendment. You are in the review queue.
  • Code 971. A notice has been sent to you. This often signals that the IRS needs more time or is asking for additional information before it can finish processing.
  • Code 290. An additional tax assessment. A dollar amount next to it means extra tax is being charged. If it shows $0.00, the IRS is typically releasing an internal account freeze without changing your balance, which is a routine step after an amended return is reviewed.7Taxpayer Advocate Service. • Code 846. A refund has been approved and issued. The dollar amount and date next to the code tell you how much and when.

The codes appear in chronological order, often with a cycle code identifying the specific week each entry posted. Code 977 with no Code 846 yet means the amendment has been logged but no refund has been released. If Code 971 shows up between them, check your mailbox: the IRS sent you something.

How Long Processing Should Take

The IRS asks that you allow 8 to 12 weeks for an amended return to be processed, with some cases running up to 16 weeks.1Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Amended Return Electronically filed amendments tend to move a week or two faster than paper ones.2Internal Revenue Service. Amended Return Frequently Asked Questions

Several things can push a return past those windows:

  • Errors on the return or a missing signature. The IRS sends it back and the clock essentially restarts.
  • Missing forms or schedules. The IRS may hold the return while it requests the missing documents.
  • An injured spouse claim on Form 8379. This adds significant time on its own: about 14 weeks for paper filings, or 11 weeks if filed electronically.8Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 8379
  • Identity theft or fraud flags, which require a manual security review.
  • Routing to specialized areas. Amendments involving bankruptcy, revenue officer review, or appeals move to a separate processing track and take longer.2Internal Revenue Service. Amended Return Frequently Asked Questions

If the tool still shows Received well past 12 weeks, that is not automatically a sign something is wrong. It usually just means a reviewer hasn’t finished with it yet. The transcript will show movement before the public tool does in many cases, which is why pulling one is worth the extra step.

When to Call the IRS About Your Amendment

The IRS asks that you call about an amended return only if the Where’s My Amended Return tool specifically directs you to, or if 16 weeks have gone by with no status change and no correspondence.1Internal Revenue Service. Before you dial, pull up your tax account transcript and have a copy of your Form 1040-X in front of you. Agents can work through a case much faster when you can reference specific transaction codes and dates. If your transcript shows a Code 971 you haven’t received in the mail, mention that too; a notice may be lost or delayed, and knowing the exact date it was issued helps the agent look it up.
