Where to Send Your TransUnion Dispute Letter

Send your TransUnion dispute letter to TransUnion Consumer Solutions, P.O. Box 2000, Chester, PA 19016-2000. This is the address TransUnion designates for dispute correspondence by standard or certified mail, and once the letter arrives, federal law requires the bureau to investigate the disputed information at no cost to you.1TransUnion. The Mailing Address

Address the envelope exactly as follows:

TransUnion Consumer Solutions
P.O. Box 2000
Chester, PA 19016-20001TransUnion. Dispute Your Credit Report by Mail or Phone

Both standard and certified mail go to this same P.O. box. TransUnion also offers a downloadable mailing label on its dispute page that helps route your letter internally. Write “DISPUTE” clearly on the outside of the envelope so it reaches the right team.

Use Certified Mail with Return Receipt

The 30-day investigation clock starts the day TransUnion receives your letter, not the day you drop it in the mailbox.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681i – Procedure in Case of Disputed Accuracy Certified mail with return receipt requested gives you a tracking number and a signed record of that delivery date. If the bureau later misses its deadline or you need to file a complaint, that receipt is your proof.

What to Put in the Letter

You do not need a specific form. A plain, self-drafted letter works as long as TransUnion can identify you, find the disputed entry, and understand what is wrong. Include:1TransUnion. Dispute Your Credit Report by Mail or Phone

  • Your full name, date of birth, and Social Security number
  • Your current mailing address, where TransUnion will send the results
  • Your TransUnion file number, if you have one from a previous report
  • The name of the company that reported the disputed item, as it appears on your credit report
  • The partial account number, copied from your credit report rather than the creditor’s statement
  • A short explanation of why the information is wrong, such as an account paid in full or an incorrect balance

Attach copies of anything that backs up your claim: bank statements, payment confirmations, court records. Send copies only. TransUnion does not return documents after the investigation.3Annual Credit Report. Filing A Dispute

If the Error Involves Identity Theft

When the disputed entry comes from identity theft, such as an account you never opened, the Federal Trade Commission recommends filing a report at IdentityTheft.gov first to get a personalized recovery plan.4Federal Trade Commission. Disputing Errors on Your Credit Reports Include a copy of the FTC identity theft report, and a police report if you filed one, with your dispute letter. These documents can trigger additional protections, including blocking the fraudulent information from reappearing on your file.

What Happens After TransUnion Gets Your Letter

Federal law gives TransUnion 30 days to complete the investigation after receiving your dispute.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681i – Procedure in Case of Disputed Accuracy During that window, TransUnion forwards your letter and any supporting documents to the company that reported the information, known as the furnisher. The furnisher investigates and reports its findings back.4Federal Trade Commission. Disputing Errors on Your Credit Reports

The deadline stretches to 45 days in two situations: if you send additional information during the initial 30-day window, or if you filed the dispute after pulling your free annual credit report.5Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. How Long Does It Take to Repair an Error on a Credit Report The extension does not apply if TransUnion finds the disputed information inaccurate or unverifiable during the first 30 days; in that case, it must act on the finding immediately.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681i – Procedure in Case of Disputed Accuracy

When the investigation ends, TransUnion sends the results in writing. If anything is corrected, updated, or deleted, you also get a free copy of your updated credit report, and it does not count against your annual free report from AnnualCreditReport.com.4Federal Trade Commission. Disputing Errors on Your Credit Reports If the furnisher confirms the reported information was inaccurate, it must notify all three nationwide credit bureaus so their files match.

If TransUnion Calls Your Dispute Frivolous or Verifies the Item

TransUnion can decline to investigate if it decides your dispute is frivolous or irrelevant, usually because the letter lacks enough detail or evidence to show what is being challenged.4Federal Trade Commission. Disputing Errors on Your Credit Reports If it does, it must notify you within five business days, explain the reason, and identify what more it needs to move forward.6eCFR. 12 CFR 222.43 – Direct Disputes

If the investigation goes forward but the information is verified as accurate, you can still add a brief statement of dispute to your credit file. TransUnion can limit that statement to 100 words. Once filed, it (or a summary) appears alongside the disputed item in future reports.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681i – Procedure in Case of Disputed Accuracy

Online and Phone Alternatives

Mail is not the only channel. You can file through the TransUnion Service Center online and track your dispute in real time, with email notifications when the dispute is opened, at investigation milestones, and when results are ready.7TransUnion. If TransUnion Does Not Fix the Error

File a Complaint with the CFPB

You can file a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, but only after you have disputed directly with TransUnion and either waited at least 45 days or confirmed the dispute is no longer pending. Filing before then can cause the CFPB to discontinue processing. Complaints go through the CFPB website (about 7 to 10 minutes) or by phone at (855) 411-2372, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET, with phone support in more than 180 languages.8Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Suing Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act

If a credit bureau or furnisher willfully fails to follow the Fair Credit Reporting Act, for example by ignoring a valid dispute or refusing to correct verified errors, you may have grounds to sue. A successful willful-noncompliance claim can produce actual damages or statutory damages between $100 and $1,000 per violation, plus punitive damages, attorney’s fees, and court costs.9Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681n – Civil Liability for Willful Noncompliance A consumer rights attorney can tell you whether the facts of your situation support a claim, especially if the error cost you a loan, a better interest rate, or other measurable financial harm.
