Income from a 1099-K goes to one of three places on your Form 1040 return, and which one depends on how you earned the money. Business or freelance earnings go on Schedule C, whose net profit flows to Schedule 1, Line 3, and then to Form 1040, Line 8.1Internal Revenue Service. 2025 Instructions for Schedule C (Form 1040) Hobby income goes on Schedule 1, Part I, Line 8j.2Internal Revenue Service. 2025 Schedule 1 (Form 1040) – Additional Income and Adjustments to Income Personal items you sold at a loss get zeroed out, either at the top of Schedule 1, Part I, or on Form 8949.3Internal Revenue Service. What to Do With Form 1099-K Getting the placement right controls whether you owe self-employment tax, whether you can deduct expenses, and whether the IRS flags a mismatch against the copy it already has.
Decide What Kind of Income It Is Before You Pick a Schedule
The 1099-K itself doesn’t tell you which line to use. You do, based on what the payments were for. Three categories cover almost every situation:
- Business or self-employment income. You sold goods or services through a trade, business, or freelance activity intended to make a profit.
- Hobby income. You earned money from an activity you don’t pursue for profit.
- Personal property sold at a loss. You sold used belongings such as furniture, electronics, or a car for less than you originally paid.
The line between a business and a hobby is where most filers get stuck. The IRS looks at whether you depend on the income, whether you keep business-like records, and whether you’ve made a profit in at least three of the last five years, among other factors.4Internal Revenue Service. Know the Difference Between a Hobby and a Business Getting the classification wrong costs money either way: treating a real business as a hobby forfeits your deductions, and treating a hobby as a business hands you a self-employment tax bill you didn’t need to pay.
One boundary worth flagging: the Box 1a amount is gross. It includes refunds, chargebacks, platform fees, and discounts that were already netted out of what you actually received.5eCFR. 26 CFR 1.6050W-1 – Information Reporting for Payments Made in Settlement of Payment Card and Third Party Network Transactions Whatever schedule you use, you’ll need your own transaction records to arrive at the correct figures.
Business Income: Schedule C
For a business, freelance operation, or independent contract work, the 1099-K amount goes on Schedule C (Profit or Loss From Business), Part I, Line 1 (gross receipts or sales). If you received multiple 1099-Ks, combine them with any other business income on that line.3Internal Revenue Service. What to Do With Form 1099-K
Part II of Schedule C is where you subtract business expenses: supplies, advertising, vehicle costs, home office expenses, software subscriptions, professional services, and the like. The result on Line 31 is your net profit or loss. That figure carries to Schedule 1, Line 3, and from there to Form 1040, Line 8 as part of total income.1Internal Revenue Service. 2025 Instructions for Schedule C (Form 1040)
Because Box 1a is gross, cross-check the number against your platform’s transaction history before filing. Refunds, chargebacks, and processor fees that were skimmed off before the money reached your bank account still show up in Box 1a; if you don’t recover them as returns or expenses on Schedule C, you’ll overstate your income.
Self-Employment Tax Follows Schedule C
If your Schedule C net profit is $400 or more, you also owe self-employment tax, calculated on Schedule SE.6Internal Revenue Service. Self-Employment Tax (Social Security and Medicare Taxes) The combined rate is 15.3%: 12.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare. For 2026, the Social Security portion applies only to the first $184,500 of combined wages and self-employment earnings; the Medicare portion has no cap.7Social Security Administration. Contribution and Benefit Base Wages from a W-2 job count toward that Social Security ceiling, so a side business on top of a salaried job may owe less self-employment tax than a straight calculation would suggest. You can deduct half of your self-employment tax as an adjustment on Schedule 1.
Hobby income and personal item sales do not trigger self-employment tax. That’s the practical reason the business-versus-hobby call matters on a dollar basis, not just conceptually.
Hobby Income: Schedule 1, Line 8j
If the payments came from an activity you don’t run for profit, report the gross amount on Schedule 1 (Form 1040), Part I, Line 8j. The Schedule 1 total then flows to Form 1040, Line 8.2Internal Revenue Service. 2025 Schedule 1 (Form 1040) – Additional Income and Adjustments to Income
The trade-off, compared to Schedule C, is that you can’t deduct hobby expenses against hobby earnings. Spend $3,000 on materials for a craft hobby and sell $2,000 worth of items, and you owe tax on the full $2,000 with no offset for your costs.4Internal Revenue Service. Know the Difference Between a Hobby and a Business No self-employment tax applies.
Personal Items Sold at a Loss: Zero It Out
This is the most common source of confusion. Sell a used couch you paid $1,200 for on a resale platform and get $400, and you owe no tax on the sale. You still need to account for the 1099-K on your return so the IRS’s automated matching doesn’t treat the amount as unreported income.3Internal Revenue Service. What to Do With Form 1099-K Two methods work:
- Schedule 1 shortcut. The 2025 Schedule 1 has a dedicated entry area at the top of Part I, above Line 1, for 1099-K amounts received in error or for personal items sold at a loss. Enter the gross amount there; the form nets it to zero so it doesn’t affect adjusted gross income.2Internal Revenue Service. 2025 Schedule 1 (Form 1040) – Additional Income and Adjustments to Income
- Form 8949 with Schedule D. List the proceeds in column (d), your original cost in column (e), code “L” in column (f) to flag a nondeductible loss on personal property, and an adjustment in column (g) that brings column (h) to zero. Totals carry to Schedule D.8Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 8949 (2025)
The Schedule 1 approach is faster. Form 8949 creates a fuller paper trail, which helps if you sold many items or expect the IRS to ask about the loss. Either way, hang on to proof of what you originally paid.
Personal items sold at a gain are a different situation and produce a taxable capital gain reported on Form 8949 and Schedule D through the normal columns, without the “L” code.
1099-K Received in Error
If the form reports transactions you didn’t make, the wrong dollar amount, or was sent to you by mistake, contact the issuer first. Their name and phone number appear in the upper left corner of the form. Ask for a corrected 1099-K and keep copies of everything.9Internal Revenue Service. Actions to Take if a Form 1099-K Is Received in Error or With Incorrect Information
If a corrected form doesn’t arrive in time, you can neutralize the incorrect amount on your return. Report the erroneous amount on Schedule 1, Part I, Line 8z as “Form 1099-K Received in Error,” then enter the same amount as a negative adjustment on Part II, Line 24z with the same description. The two entries cancel out.9Internal Revenue Service. Actions to Take if a Form 1099-K Is Received in Error or With Incorrect Information The dedicated entry area at the top of Schedule 1, Part I works too and covers both errors and personal losses.
Backup Withholding in Box 4
Check Box 4 of the 1099-K before you file. If a platform withheld 24% because you didn’t provide a valid Taxpayer Identification Number or your TIN didn’t match IRS records, the withheld amount appears there.10Internal Revenue Service. Publication 15 (2026), (Circular E), Employer’s Tax Guide Claim it as a credit on Form 1040, Line 25d, the same line used for federal income tax withheld from a paycheck. Overwithheld amounts come back as part of your refund.
One last thing to keep in mind: the IRS receives its own copy of every 1099-K sent to you. Reporting the amount on the right schedule (or properly zeroing it out) is what keeps the automated matching system from generating a notice months after you file.
