Austin, TX 73344-02542Internal Revenue Service. Where to File – Forms Beginning With the Number 8

This is not the same address used for paper 1040s or tax payments, which route to different IRS centers based on your state. Form 8453 has its own destination. Confirm the attention line and zip code before sealing the envelope, because older variants of this address still circulate online.

The Three-Business-Day Deadline

The clock starts when the IRS accepts your e-filed return, not when you transmit it. You then have three business days to put Form 8453 and its attachments in the mail.1Internal Revenue Service. Form 8453 What triggers the window depends on how you filed:

  • If you filed through a tax professional acting as an ERO, the three days begin when the ERO receives the IRS acceptance acknowledgment.
  • If you filed through online software, the three days begin when your transmitter or service provider notifies you that the IRS accepted your return.

Business days exclude weekends and federal holidays. E-file on a Friday evening and get accepted Saturday morning, and your three days start Monday. Save the acceptance email so you can show when the window opened if the timing is ever questioned.

How to Send It

You can use the U.S. Postal Service or an IRS-designated private delivery service. The IRS recognizes specific service tiers from DHL Express, FedEx, and UPS for the timely-mailing-as-timely-filing rule.3Internal Revenue Service. Private Delivery Services (PDS) Not every service qualifies. FedEx Ground and UPS SurePost, for instance, are not on the approved list. Qualifying options include FedEx First Overnight, Priority Overnight, Standard Overnight, and 2 Day; UPS Next Day Air and 2nd Day Air variants; and DHL Express Worldwide and its timed Express tiers.

Whichever method you choose, get tracking or a delivery confirmation receipt. That receipt is your evidence that you mailed within the three-day window. Without it, a lost envelope leaves you with no way to prove you met the deadline.

What Belongs in the Envelope

Form 8453 is a transmittal cover sheet for specific paper documents that can’t travel with an e-filed return. Check only the boxes on the form that match what you’re attaching. The documents it’s designed to carry include Form 1098-C for donated vehicles, boats, or airplanes; Form 2848 power of attorney; Form 3115 for accounting method changes; Form 3468 investment credit documentation; Form 4136 fuel credit certificates; Form 5713 international boycott reports; Form 8283 appraisals for noncash charitable contributions; Form 8332 releases of a child exemption claim; Form 8858 for foreign disregarded entities; Form 8864 biodiesel certificates; and Form 8949 if you elected not to report capital gains transactions electronically.1Internal Revenue Service. If a document isn’t on that list, it doesn’t belong with Form 8453.4Internal Revenue Service. About Form 8453, U.S. Individual Income Tax Transmittal for an IRS e-file Return

What to Leave Out

The IRS instructions are explicit about what not to include:1Internal Revenue Service. Form 8453

  • W-2s, W-2Gs, and 1099-Rs. These transmit electronically with your return. Do not send paper copies.
  • A copy of your Form 1040. The return was already filed electronically; a duplicate creates confusion.
  • Tax payments. If you owe, send payment separately with Form 1040-V to the address on that form by April 15, 2026. Never attach a check to Form 8453.

Adding extra documents slows processing at the Austin facility because staff have to sort out what belongs.

Do Not Sign the Form

The form itself instructs you not to sign it.1Internal Revenue Service. Form 8453 Your electronic return already carries your authentication through the e-file signature process, and Form 8453 is a transmittal, not a declaration. Enter your name and Social Security number exactly as they appear on your 1040. On joint returns, list both SSNs in the same order as the first names on the return.

One exception: if an agent signed your electronic return on your behalf under a power of attorney, attach the POA document authorizing that signature.

If You Miss the Three-Day Window

The IRS does not publish a specific penalty for a late or missing Form 8453. Skipping it is not consequence-free, though. The attachments are the paper evidence supporting credits or deductions on your e-filed return. Without them on file, the IRS may send a notice asking for the documentation, and credits or deductions tied to the missing paperwork can be disallowed until you respond. If the IRS adjusts your return downward because the supporting documents never arrived, you could owe additional tax plus interest.

The exposure scales with what you’re claiming. A Form 8283 appraisal backing a large noncash donation invites more scrutiny than a routine Form 8332 exemption release. If you slip past the three-day mark, mail the form anyway rather than skip it.

Other Versions of Form 8453

The address and rules above apply to the individual income tax version. Estates and trusts filing Form 1041 use Form 8453-FE instead.5Internal Revenue Service. About Form 8453-FE, U.S. Estate or Trust Declaration for an IRS e-file Return Partnerships, corporations, and exempt organizations have their own variants, each with its own checkbox list and potentially a different mailing address. Check the instructions on the specific variant before sending anything.
