To find your VA file number, check the top of any decision letter, award letter, or other correspondence the VA has sent you; the number is printed in the header, sometimes labeled “File Number,” “Claim Number,” or “C-Number.”1VA.gov | Design System. Social Security or VA File Number If nothing turns up in your paperwork, you can pull it from your VA.gov account, call the benefits hotline, or ask a Veterans Service Organization representative to look it up. For most veterans who filed claims in recent decades, the file number is simply your Social Security number. Veterans who filed before the VA switched to SSNs may have a separate eight- or nine-digit identifier assigned through the older Beneficiary Identification and Records Locator Subsystem.
Look at VA Paperwork You Already Have
Start with the mail. Rating decisions, award letters, and benefit notices from the Veterans Benefits Administration print the file number near the top of the first page. The three labels above all refer to the same identifier, so any of them works.1VA.gov | Design System. Social Security or VA File Number
Also worth checking: VA Health Care ID cards, patient summaries from VA medical centers, and older correspondence from the VBA. One caveat on newer letters. Under the Social Security Number Fraud Prevention Act of 2017, the VA has been removing SSNs from mailed documents, so recent correspondence may show a truncated number or no number at all.2U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Sign In to VA.gov
If you have a verified VA.gov account through Login.gov or ID.me, you can retrieve the number yourself in a few minutes. Sign in, go to Records, and choose Download VA benefit letters.3Veterans Affairs. Download VA Benefit Letters The benefit summary letter is generated straight from your claims record and includes your identifying information.
You can also click your name at the top of any VA.gov page and open Profile to review the personal information the VA has on file.4Veterans Affairs. Managing Your VA.gov Profile If your file number doesn’t appear there, the downloaded benefit letter is the more reliable source.
Call the VA Benefits Hotline
No online account, no letters on hand? Call the VA at 1-800-827-1000, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Eastern.5Veterans Affairs. Ask Your Accredited Representative
If you already work with a VSO such as the VFW, DAV, or American Legion, your accredited representative can pull the number for you. Once representation is on file, they have access to the Veterans Benefits Management System and can open your electronic claims folder in minutes.6Veterans Affairs. Slower Options: Mail or a Regional Office Visit
Two other routes exist if the ones above don’t fit your situation. You can submit VA Form 3288 (Request for and Consent to Release Information from Individual’s Records), stating that you need your VA file number, and mail it to the VA’s Evidence Intake Center.7Veterans Affairs. About VA Form VA3288 This is the slowest path, so it usually only makes sense if you’re already sending in other paperwork or need a formal written response.
You can also visit a VA regional office in person. Staff can look up your file number after checking a government-issued photo ID. Most offices prefer that you book an appointment in advance rather than walking in, so call ahead to confirm the local policy.8Veterans Affairs. VERA – Home
If You’re a Dependent or Survivor
Dependents and survivors don’t get a separate file number of their own. The VA uses the veteran’s file number with a letter or number suffix added to the end for Chapter 35 education benefits, Dependency and Indemnity Compensation, and other survivor programs.9GI Bill. Glossary: File Number
Most survivor forms accept the veteran’s Social Security number as an alternative when the file number isn’t known. VA Form 21P-534EZ for DIC and the burial benefits application, for example, ask for the file number only “if known” and take either identifier.10Veterans Affairs. Don’t Confuse It With Your Military Service Number
Older DD-214s show a military service number, assigned to service members before the military adopted SSNs in the late 1960s and early 1970s. That number is not a VA file number and won’t work as a substitute on VA forms. If you have both a legacy VA C-file number and an SSN in the VA’s system, use whichever number appears on your most recent VA correspondence. When a form has space for both, provide both.
