To find your ITIN number, start with the two documents that display it in full: the CP565 notice the IRS sent when it originally assigned the number, and any federal tax return you have filed since. The ITIN sits at the top of Form 1040 or Form 1040-NR in the taxpayer identification field. If you cannot locate either document, call the IRS at 800-829-1040 from inside the United States, or 267-941-1000 from abroad, and the agent will release the number after verifying your identity.
Start With Your CP565 Notice or a Past Return
When the IRS assigns an ITIN, it mails Notice CP565, which shows the full nine-digit number.1Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your CP565 Notice That notice is the single most reliable record of your ITIN. There is no self-service way to request a replacement CP565, so if the original is lost, you will need one of the other methods below.
A copy of a previously filed federal tax return is the next best source. On Form 1040, your ITIN appears in the top section next to your name, in the field labeled for a Social Security number or taxpayer identification number. Nonresident filers will find it in the same position on Form 1040-NR.2Internal Revenue Service. How to Apply for an ITIN
Documents That Won’t Show the Full Number
A few records that seem like they should help usually won’t. IRS tax transcripts mask taxpayer identification numbers, so a transcript will only display the last few digits.3Internal Revenue Service. About Tax Transcripts W-2s and pay stubs also aren’t a source: the IRS instructs employers not to accept an ITIN in place of a Social Security number for employment, so payroll records generally won’t contain one.4Internal Revenue Service. Log In to Your IRS Online Account
ITIN holders can create an IRS online account by verifying their identity through ID.me, even without a Social Security number.5Internal Revenue Service. How to Register for IRS Online Self-Help Tools Once inside, you can view tax records, payment history, and account details linked to your ITIN. Keep in mind that transcripts viewed through the portal are masked the same way as mailed transcripts, so the full nine digits may not appear in every section of the account.
Call the IRS

Ask Your Acceptance Agent or Tax Preparer
If a Certifying Acceptance Agent submitted your original Form W-7, that office likely has your ITIN on file. Certifying Acceptance Agents review identification documents, submit applications on behalf of clients, and receive copies of the IRS assignment notice.9Internal Revenue Service. Acceptance Agent Application Frequently Asked Questions Calling the agent who handled your application is often faster than reaching the IRS.
If you can’t remember which agent you used, the IRS keeps a searchable directory on its ITIN Acceptance Agent Program page, filterable by state or country.10Internal Revenue Service. Check Financial Statements
Banks and mortgage servicers collect a taxpayer identification number when you open an account, and that number appears on tax forms they issue, such as Form 1099-INT for interest income and Form 1098 for mortgage interest. The IRS permits these institutions to truncate identification numbers on the copies they send to you, so the version in your mailbox may show only the last four digits.11Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Forms 1099-INT and 1099-OID12Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1098 Even a partial number helps you confirm the right ITIN once you retrieve the full digits elsewhere. The institution’s internal records usually contain the complete number, so a call to your bank or credit union, or a visit to a branch, is worth trying.
Confirm Your ITIN Is Still Active
Once you have the number, check whether it is still valid. An ITIN that has not appeared on a federal tax return for three consecutive tax years expires on December 31 following that third year of non-use.13Internal Revenue Service. How to Renew an ITIN An expired ITIN isn’t lost; it just has to be renewed with Form W-7 before you can file again. Certain tax credits, including the child tax credit, the credit for other dependents, and the American opportunity tax credit, require a valid ITIN assigned by your return’s due date, including extensions.8Internal Revenue Service.
