Where to Find Net Income on a Tax Return: Form 1040 and Schedule C

Form 1040 does not have a line labeled “net income.” When someone asks where to find net income on a tax return, they almost always mean Adjusted Gross Income on Line 11 of Form 1040. The exception is a business lender reviewing a sole proprietor’s finances; that request points to Line 31 of Schedule C, which shows the net profit from the business itself.

The Three Income Lines on Form 1040

Every Form 1040 calculates income in three steps, and each step lands on a specific line.

Total Income on Line 9

Line 9 is the widest number. It combines everything taxable you received during the year: wages, interest, dividends, capital gains, retirement distributions, business profits, and any other income reported through supporting schedules. Federal law defines gross income as all income from whatever source unless a specific exclusion applies.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 61 Gross Income Defined2Internal Revenue Service. Form 1040

Adjusted Gross Income on Line 11

AGI takes total income and subtracts the “above-the-line” adjustments Congress designated under 26 U.S.C. ยง 62.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 62 Adjusted Gross Income Defined Those adjustments live on Schedule 1, Part II, and include educator expenses, student loan interest, traditional IRA contributions, health savings account contributions, and the deductible portion of self-employment tax, among others.4Internal Revenue Service. Schedule 1 (Form 1040) 2025 The result is Line 11.2Internal Revenue Service. Form 1040

AGI is the number that matters outside the return itself. It controls eligibility for dozens of credits and deductions, drives financial aid calculations, and serves as the starting point for many state income tax returns. When a form or a person asks for your “income” from your return with no further detail, AGI is almost always the safe answer.

Taxable Income on Line 15

Taxable income is what remains after you subtract the standard deduction or itemized deductions, plus any qualified business income deduction, from your AGI.2Internal Revenue Service. Form 1040 It is always the smallest of the three figures and reflects personal choices about itemizing, retirement contributions, and business deductions. External parties rarely use it as a qualification measure because of that variability.

Which Line the Requester Actually Wants

“Net income” means different things to different offices. Match the request to the source:

  • Mortgage and personal loan applications: AGI from Line 11. For self-employed borrowers, lenders also pull net profit from Schedule C and often average two years of returns.
  • FAFSA: the application pulls AGI directly, along with certain untaxed income items.
  • Landlord or rental applications: most accept AGI, though some want total income from Line 9 to see the picture before adjustments.
  • Small business or SBA loan applications: Schedule C, Line 31 for sole proprietors, or Schedule K-1 income for partners and S-corporation shareholders.
  • Government benefit programs: many use Modified Adjusted Gross Income, which adds certain excluded items back to AGI.

When it isn’t clear, ask which line number they need. Providing the wrong figure can delay an application or draw a request for more documentation.

Business Net Income on Schedule C, Line 31

If you run a sole proprietorship or freelance, your business’s net income is calculated on Schedule C before it ever reaches Form 1040.5Internal Revenue Service. About Schedule C (Form 1040), Profit or Loss From Business (Sole Proprietorship) Schedule C starts with gross receipts, subtracts cost of goods sold to reach gross profit, then subtracts every ordinary and necessary business expense: advertising, supplies, vehicle costs, home office, insurance, and so on.

Line 31 shows the net profit or loss.6Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Schedule C (Form 1040) (2025) That figure flows to Schedule 1, Line 3, and from there into total income on Form 1040.7Internal Revenue Service. 2025 Schedule C (Form 1040) Profit or Loss From Business (Sole Proprietorship) It is also the number business lenders focus on, because it reflects what the business earned after operating costs.

Mortgage underwriters do not always take Line 31 at face value. They typically add back non-cash expenses like depreciation, since those deductions reduce taxable profit without touching the cash available to pay a loan.8Fannie Mae. Income or Loss Reported on IRS Form 1040, Schedule C The Schedule C net profit also triggers self-employment tax on Schedule SE, and half of that self-employment tax then becomes an above-the-line deduction that reduces your AGI.9Internal Revenue Service. Where to Look If You Don’t File a Schedule C

Business income does not always come through Schedule C. Partners and S-corporation shareholders receive a Schedule K-1 instead.

Both K-1 amounts, along with rental income and royalties, are reported on Schedule E. Partnership and S-corporation ordinary income flows through Schedule E, Part II, Line 28; directly owned rental property income flows through Part I.12Internal Revenue Service. 2025 Instructions for Schedule E (Form 1040) Schedule E totals then feed into Form 1040 and become part of AGI. If a lender asks for “business income” and you earn it through a partnership or S-corp, point them to the K-1 and the corresponding Schedule E lines rather than hunting for a Schedule C you don’t have.

When AGI Isn’t Quite the Right Number

Some programs use Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) rather than plain AGI. There is no MAGI line on Form 1040, because the add-back items vary by benefit.13Internal Revenue Service. Modified Adjusted Gross Income For the premium tax credit, MAGI equals AGI plus tax-exempt interest, nontaxable Social Security benefits, and excluded foreign earned income. Roth IRA eligibility uses a slightly different set of adjustments.

If a form asks for MAGI, don’t just copy Line 11. Check whether the common add-backs apply, particularly tax-exempt bond interest on Line 2a and nontaxable Social Security (the difference between Lines 6a and 6b). For most W-2 employees without foreign income or tax-exempt interest, MAGI and AGI are the same figure.

Income That Never Reaches Form 1040

Some money you receive during the year does not appear as taxable income on your return at all, so no line on Form 1040 will reflect it. Common nontaxable sources include child support payments, life insurance death benefits paid to a beneficiary, VA disability compensation and other Department of Veterans Affairs benefits, welfare and other need-based public assistance, and gifts or inheritances received.14Internal Revenue Service. Publication 525 (2025), Taxable and Nontaxable Income

When applying for benefits or loans, you may need to document this income separately with bank statements or award letters, because pulling any line from your tax return will not show it.

Getting Your AGI When You Don’t Have the Return

You need last year’s AGI to e-file the current year’s return, because the IRS uses it as an identity check. The fastest source is your IRS Online Account, where you can select the prior tax year and view AGI on the Records and Status tab.15Internal Revenue Service. Adjusted Gross Income If you cannot access or create an online account, a free Tax Return Transcript shows the same figure. Look for the amount corresponding to Line 11 of that year’s Form 1040.

Lenders often want independent confirmation rather than a copy of your return. A Tax Return Transcript shows most line items from the return as filed and covers the current year plus three prior years; a Record of Account Transcript combines original data with any post-filing changes.16Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them You can request either through your online account, by phone, or on Form 4506-T. Many mortgage lenders skip that step and pull the data directly through the IRS Income Verification Express Service; you authorize the request by signing Form 4506-C.17Internal Revenue Service. Form 4506-C IVES Request for Transcript of Tax Return Being asked to sign that form during a loan application is routine.
