There is no single fax number for IRS Form 433-D. Where to fax IRS Form 433-D depends on which IRS office is handling your case, and that number appears on the most recent letter or notice the IRS sent you about your tax debt. If you no longer have that correspondence, call the IRS collections line at 800-829-3903 and ask for the fax number of the unit assigned to your account.1Internal Revenue Service. Why There’s No Single Fax Number
Form 433-D is the IRS’s written record of an installment agreement’s terms: monthly payment amount, due date, and direct debit information.2Internal Revenue Service. Form 433-D (Rev. 7-2024) Installment Agreement It’s typically used to modify an existing agreement, reinstate one that defaulted, or add direct debit withdrawals. Because an active case can sit with a Collection Advisory Group, a Service Center, or an individual Revenue Officer, the IRS routes the form to whichever office is managing your file. Each of those offices has its own fax line.
The form’s own instructions reflect this. They direct you to “return Part 1 to IRS at the address on the letter that came with it or the address shown in the ‘For assistance’ box on the front of the form.”2Internal Revenue Service. Form 433-D (Rev. 7-2024) Installment Agreement The same logic applies to faxing. You’re sending the form back to the office that sent it to you, or to the office currently assigned to your account.
One boundary worth flagging: if you’ve never had an installment agreement and you’re trying to request one for the first time, Form 433-D is not the right form. That’s Form 9465, Installment Agreement Request, which goes to an IRS Service Center.3Internal Revenue Service. About Form 9465, Installment Agreement Request
Finding the Right Fax Number
Pull Your Most Recent IRS Letter
The reliable method is to find the last letter or notice the IRS sent you about the debt. That might be Letter 2849 or 2850 confirming an installment agreement, Notice CP523 warning of a potential default termination, or a Notice of Intent to Levy.4Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your CP523 Notice Those notices carry a phone number and a fax number for the specific unit on your account. The fax number printed there is your target.
Call 800-829-3903 if the Letter Is Gone
If you can’t find your correspondence, call 800-829-3903. When a representative answers, ask specifically for the fax number of the Collection Advisory Group or Revenue Officer assigned to your case. Be direct about what you need. A general public-inquiry fax line will route your form into a queue, and processing can slip by weeks while the IRS’s collection timeline keeps running. When you’re trying to reinstate a defaulted agreement before enforcement resumes, those weeks matter.
What to Send With the Fax
Include a cover sheet with your name, your Social Security number or Employer Identification Number, a daytime phone number, and a return fax number so the IRS can reach you if something is unclear. State on the cover sheet that you’re transmitting Form 433-D and whether it’s for a modification, reinstatement, or new direct debit authorization.
If you’re setting up or changing direct debit, attach a voided check or fill in your bank’s routing number and account number on the form. The IRS has specific rules here: the first two digits of the routing number must be 01 through 12 or 21 through 32, and you should not use numbers from a deposit slip because those may contain internal routing codes that won’t work.2Internal Revenue Service. Form 433-D (Rev. 7-2024) Installment Agreement Confirm the numbers with your bank before you send.
After the fax goes through, print the transmission confirmation sheet and keep it. That page is your proof of submission and the only evidence you’ll have if the IRS later says it never received the form. The date and time stamp on the sheet can establish that you met any deadline the IRS set.
Consider Skipping the Fax Entirely
Before you track down a fax number, check whether the IRS Online Payment Agreement tool can handle what you need. Through that tool you can adjust your monthly payment amount, change the payment due date, convert to direct debit, update your bank information, or reinstate a defaulted agreement.5Internal Revenue Service. Online Payment Agreement Application For most straightforward changes, this is faster than faxing.
It’s usually cheaper too. Revising a non-direct-debit agreement online costs $10, compared to $89 by phone, mail, or in person. Modifications to a direct debit agreement are free in any format.6Internal Revenue Service. Payment Plans; Installment Agreements
The tool has limits. If your proposed new payment falls below the IRS minimum, the system will prompt you to submit additional paperwork rather than letting you finish online. Cases assigned to a Revenue Officer, or situations involving disputed amounts, will still need Form 433-D sent directly to the assigned unit.
Mail or In-Person Submission
If faxing isn’t practical and the online tool won’t work for your situation, mail is the next option. Send the form to the address on your most recent IRS correspondence. Without that letter, call 800-829-3903 for the correct mailing address.
Use Certified Mail with Return Receipt Requested. The green return receipt card proves the IRS received the form, and the postmark establishes your submission date for any deadline.7Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 301, When, How and Where to File Keep that card. If there’s ever a dispute over whether you met a deadline, it’s your best evidence.
You can also submit Form 433-D in person at a local Taxpayer Assistance Center. All TAC visits require an appointment; call 844-545-5640 to schedule one. When you hand over the form, ask the employee for a date-stamped copy or a receipt. Without that, you have no record you were there.
Confirming the IRS Processed Your Form
Don’t assume the submission went through. After faxing, allow two to three weeks, then check your account status. The IRS Online Account portal shows your payment plan details, including the type of agreement, due dates, and payment amounts.5Internal Revenue Service. Online Payment Agreement Application If the modification or reinstatement appears there, you’re done.
You can also request an account transcript, which will reflect installment agreement changes once they’re processed. Each transcript covers only one tax year and may not show the most recent pending actions.8Internal Revenue Service. Online Account for Individuals If three weeks pass with no update, call 800-829-3903 and reference the date and time on your fax confirmation sheet. That’s what the sheet is for.
