Make Sure You’re Eligible to File Before You Fax
The IRS will not open a trace until enough time has passed for the refund to arrive through normal channels. For direct deposit refunds, you can request a trace if the deposit has not appeared five days after the standard 21-day processing window. For paper check refunds, wait at least six weeks from the date the IRS mailed your return before requesting a trace.2Taxpayer Advocate Service. Lost or Stolen Refund
Before filing, use “Where’s My Refund?” on irs.gov, the IRS2Go app, or the automated refund hotline at 800-829-1954 to confirm the refund is actually missing. Those tools are not available for joint returns; if you filed jointly, call 800-829-1040 or go straight to Form 3911.3Internal Revenue Service. Refund Inquiries
