Where to Cash an IRS Check: Banks, Stores, and Apps

You can cash an IRS refund check at your own bank or credit union for free, at some banks as a non-customer for a small fee, at large retailers like Walmart and Kroger for a flat fee, at check-cashing stores for a percentage of the check, or through mobile apps like PayPal and Venmo. Where to cash an IRS check comes down to how much you’re willing to pay and how fast you need the money. The check is valid for 12 months from its issue date, so you have room to pick the option that fits.

What to Bring

Every place that cashes a Treasury check will ask for government-issued photo ID. A driver’s license, state ID card, military ID, or U.S. passport all work. Financial institutions verify identity using documents “normally acceptable within the banking community as a means of identification when cashing checks for nondepositors.”1eCFR. 31 CFR 1010.415 – Purchases of Bank Checks and Drafts, Cashiers Checks, Money Orders and Travelers Checks

You also need to endorse the check by signing the back. Wait until you’re at the cashing location to sign. A signed Treasury check in the wrong hands is as good as cash. If the check lists two names, both people generally need to sign, or one can sign on the other’s behalf with a notation like “John Smith by Jane Smith.”2eCFR. 31 CFR Part 240 – Indorsement and Payment of Checks Drawn on the United States Treasury

Your Own Bank or Credit Union

If you have an account, this is almost always the best option. Cashing or depositing at a teller window costs nothing. Federal rules require a U.S. Treasury check deposited into the payee’s own account to be available for withdrawal by the next business day.3eCFR. 12 CFR Part 229 – Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks (Regulation CC) Many banks release the funds immediately, though hold policies vary.4Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Banks that do provide this service typically charge a flat fee in the range of $5 to $8. Bring your photo ID. The teller may verify the check through a federal payment system before handing over cash.

Retail Stores and Check-Cashing Stores

Large retailers usually beat standalone check-cashing stores on price. Walmart charges a maximum of $4 for government checks up to $1,000 and a maximum of $8 for checks above that amount, with a standard limit of $5,000 that rises to $7,500 from January through April for tax refund season.6Walmart. Check Cashing Kroger cashes government checks up to $5,000, with fees that vary by store.7Kroger. Check Cashing – Cash a Check Near You

Standalone check-cashing stores usually charge a percentage of the check, often 1.5% to 3.5% depending on the state. On a $3,000 refund, that works out to $45 to $105. Their advantage is extended hours, which can matter if you need cash outside normal banking times.

Mobile Deposit and Payment Apps

If you have a bank account with mobile deposit, you can deposit the check by photographing the front and back through your banking app. Place the check on a flat, well-lit surface. Your bank’s mobile deposit hold policy may differ from its in-branch policy, so check before you count on the money.4Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. PayPal and Venmo will cash government checks through their apps, no bank account required. Refunds Over $10,000

If your refund exceeds $10,000 and you cash it in a single transaction, the bank or retailer files a Currency Transaction Report with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network.10FFIEC. Assessing Compliance with BSA Regulatory Requirements – Currency Transaction Reporting This is routine and automatic. You haven’t done anything wrong. Deliberately splitting a large check into smaller transactions to avoid the reporting threshold, called structuring, is itself a federal crime, so just cash or deposit the check in one transaction.

If the Check Is Expired, Lost, or Stolen

A U.S. Treasury check becomes void one year after its issue date. The Treasury cancels any check that remains uncashed for more than 12 months, and no bank, retailer, or app will cash an expired one.11eCFR. 31 CFR 240.5 – Limitations on Payment; Cancellation and Distribution of Proceeds of Checks If yours has expired, call the IRS at 800-829-0115 to request a replacement, then destroy the old check. The replacement is mailed to the address from your tax return and typically arrives within 30 days.12Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your CP237A Notice

Joint filers cannot use the automated system and should call 800-829-1040 or file Form 3911. If no one cashed the original, the IRS cancels it and reissues your refund. If someone did cash it, the Bureau of the Fiscal Service sends a claim package and reviews the signature on the canceled check before deciding whether to issue a replacement, a process that can take up to six weeks.13Internal Revenue Service.
