Where Is the Refund Amount on Your Tax Return?

On a federal Form 1040, the refund amount is on Line 35a, near the bottom of page 2 in the section labeled “Refund.” That line shows the exact dollar amount you asked the IRS to send back to you, and it is the figure you will need whenever you check on your refund later.1Internal Revenue Service. Form 1040, U.S. Individual Income Tax Return (2025)

Form 1040-SR, the version designed for taxpayers 65 and older, uses the same layout and the same line numbers. The refund is still on Line 35a.

How Line 35a Relates to the Lines Around It

Three lines in the refund section work together, and understanding all three helps you confirm you are reading the right number.

Line 34 is your total overpayment. The form gets there by subtracting your total tax on Line 24 from your total payments and credits on Line 33. If Line 33 is larger, the difference is what the government collected beyond what you owed.1Internal Revenue Service. Form 1040, U.S. Individual Income Tax Return (2025)

Line 35a is the portion of that overpayment you are actually requesting as a refund. For most filers, Line 35a matches Line 34 exactly.1Internal Revenue Service. Form 1040, U.S. Individual Income Tax Return (2025)

Line 36 is where the two lines can diverge. If you chose to apply part of your overpayment to next year’s estimated taxes, that amount goes on Line 36 and reduces the refund on Line 35a by the same amount.2Internal Revenue Service. 2025 Instructions for Form 1040 So if your Line 35a looks lower than you expected, check Line 36 first.

Amended Returns Use a Different Line

If you filed Form 1040-X to correct an earlier return, the refund does not appear on Line 35a. On the amended return, Line 22 shows the amount the IRS should send you.3Internal Revenue Service. Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return (Rev. December 2025) The earlier parts of the form walk through the changes between your original and corrected figures; Line 22 is the bottom line.

Why the Exact Amount Matters

The main practical reason people look up this number is that you cannot check your refund status without it. The IRS “Where’s My Refund?” tool asks for three things: your Social Security number or ITIN, your filing status, and the exact whole-dollar refund amount from your return.4Internal Revenue Service. How Taxpayers Can Check the Status of Their Federal Tax Refund That amount is Line 35a on Form 1040 or Line 22 on Form 1040-X. Rounding or guessing will not return a match.

If you used tax software, the summary screen you saw before and after filing should show the same number that landed on Line 35a. If you kept a signed copy of your return, that copy is the safest place to pull the figure from.

When the Refund You Receive Doesn’t Match Line 35a

Sometimes the deposit or check that arrives is smaller than Line 35a. There are two common reasons.

The IRS Corrected a Math or Credit Error

If the IRS finds a calculation error, a missing form, or a credit that does not check out, it adjusts your return and sends a CP12 notice explaining what changed and showing the recalculated refund. You will generally receive the corrected refund within four to six weeks of the notice, unless you owe other debts.5Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your CP12 Notice The notice includes a side-by-side comparison of your figures and the IRS corrections.

A Debt Was Taken Through the Treasury Offset Program

The federal government can reduce your refund to cover certain debts: past-due child support, spousal support, federal agency debts such as student loans, state income tax obligations, and certain state unemployment compensation debts.6Internal Revenue Service. Reduced Refund If an offset happens, the Bureau of the Fiscal Service sends a notice explaining how much was taken and which debt it covered. If you filed jointly and only your spouse owes the debt, Form 8379 (Injured Spouse Allocation) can protect your share.

Confirming the Refund Through Your IRS Account

Once the IRS has processed your return, you can pull a tax account transcript through your IRS online account to see exactly what happened. The transcript shows filing status, taxable income, payment types, and any post-filing changes.7Internal Revenue Service.
