Where Is My Social Security Number? Tax Forms, SSA Account, and Card

If you’re wondering where your Social Security number is, the quickest answer is that it’s printed on documents you probably already have: your most recent tax return, any W-2 or 1099 you’ve received, and your online Social Security Statement. If none of those are within reach, you can order a free replacement card from the Social Security Administration and it will arrive by mail in about seven to ten business days.1Social Security Administration. Check Your Tax Documents First

Tax paperwork is the fastest place to look. Form 1040, the standard federal income tax return, prints your Social Security number at the top of the first page. A joint return shows your spouse’s number too, along with the numbers of any dependents.2Internal Revenue Service. Your W-2 from any employer also shows the full number, because it ties your wages and withholding to your Social Security record.3Social Security Administration. The 1099 forms issued for freelance income, bank interest, or investment gains include the recipient’s Social Security number or taxpayer identification number, so check email and online accounts with the issuing institution.

Other Places the Number Appears

Beyond taxes, your Social Security number may sit in records you don’t think of right away:

  • Loan and credit applications. Mortgage paperwork, auto loan agreements, and credit card applications typically include your number because lenders use it to pull your credit history.
  • Retirement account statements. Older 401(k) or IRA statements sometimes printed the full number, though many institutions now show only the last four digits.
  • Military discharge papers. The DD-214 and related service records often used a Social Security number as the service member’s identification number, particularly for those who served after the late 1960s.6National Archives. Request Military Service Records
  • Credit reports. Your full number appears in the personal information section of reports from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Free copies are available at AnnualCreditReport.com.

One place you won’t find it: your Medicare card. Federal law required the removal of Social Security numbers from every Medicare card by April 2019, replacing them with a randomly generated Medicare Beneficiary Identifier. Don’t waste time digging through that drawer.
