On a paper Form 1040, your six-digit Identity Protection PIN goes in the boxes labeled “Identity Protection PIN” in the signature area on the second page. If you e-file, you type it into the screen your tax software presents before transmitting the return. Knowing where to enter the IP PIN on a tax return matters because the IRS checks the number the moment your return arrives, and a missing or wrong digit will bounce an e-filed return back to you.1Internal Revenue Service. On a Paper Form 1040
Turn to page two of Form 1040, 1040-SR, 1040-NR, 1040-PR, or 1040-SS and find the “Sign Here” block. Directly under the signature and occupation lines is a row of six small boxes labeled “Identity Protection PIN.” The primary taxpayer fills the first row. A spouse filing jointly fills the second row. Print each digit so the IRS scanners can read it cleanly.1Internal Revenue Service. Frequently Asked Questions About the Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN)
Only the taxpayer and spouse use those boxes. A dependent’s IP PIN is not entered anywhere on a paper return, even if the dependent has one.1Internal Revenue Service. Frequently Asked Questions About the Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN)
In Tax Software When You E-File
The software handles the underlying form fields, but you still type the number yourself. Most programs place the IP PIN screen under a “Federal” tab, inside a menu named something like “Other Tax Situations” or “Identity Verification.” If you cannot find it, use the software’s search bar and type “IP PIN” or “Identity Protection PIN” to jump straight to the entry screen.1Internal Revenue Service. Frequently Asked Questions About the Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN)
If a paid preparer files for you, give them the PIN directly so they can enter it in their software. Do not share the number with anyone other than the IRS or a trusted tax professional.2Internal Revenue Service. Dependent IP PINs When You E-File
E-filing treats dependents differently from paper filing. If any dependent on your return has been assigned an IP PIN, you must enter that dependent’s number when you e-file. The IRS looks for the dependent’s IP PIN on the Form 1040 series and, where they apply, on Form 2441 (Child and Dependent Care Expenses) and Schedule EIC (Earned Income Credit). A missing dependent IP PIN will cause the return to be rejected.1Internal Revenue Service. Frequently Asked Questions About the Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN)
Before you start, check whether each dependent has been issued an IP PIN and gather those numbers with your own.
Amended and Prior-Year Returns
Late returns for an earlier tax year and amended returns on Form 1040-X still require your IP PIN, but you use the number issued for the current calendar year rather than the year of the return itself. A 2023 return filed during 2026, for instance, uses your 2026 IP PIN.1Internal Revenue Service. Frequently Asked Questions About the Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN)
On a paper Form 1040-X, enter the IP PIN in the boxes next to the occupation line. When you e-file a 1040-X, the software places the number for you, but all six digits must be present or the electronic signature is invalid and the return is rejected.3Internal Revenue Service. What Happens If the IP PIN Is Wrong or Missing
The IRS validates the IP PIN automatically as soon as an e-filed return arrives. If the number does not match what the IRS has on file for your Social Security number, or if it is missing altogether, the return is rejected on the spot. A missing primary taxpayer IP PIN commonly triggers reject code IND-181-01; a mismatched one triggers IND-180-01.4Internal Revenue Service. Identity Protection – Common Electronic Filing Reject Codes
If your e-filed return is rejected on or before the filing deadline, you have five calendar days after the due date to correct the problem and retransmit. If you cannot fix it in time, file a paper return; that paper return is still treated as timely so long as you mail it by the later of the original due date or ten calendar days after the IRS notified you of the rejection.5Internal Revenue Service. A paper return with a missing IP PIN is not rejected outright. It is pulled for manual review, which can add weeks or months to processing.
