Where Do I Send My Federal Tax Payment? Online, Mail, or Cash

You can send a federal tax payment to the IRS several ways: electronically through IRS Direct Pay, the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS), or your IRS Online Account; by credit card, debit card, or digital wallet through an approved processor; by same-day wire from your bank; by cash at a participating retail store; or by mailing a check or money order with Form 1040-V to the IRS processing center assigned to your state. Direct Pay and EFTPS are free, pull directly from a bank account, and typically post within two business days.1Internal Revenue Service. Direct Pay Help If you mail a check, the address is either Charlotte, NC or Louisville, KY depending on where you live.

Paying Online

Online methods are the fastest way to get a payment to the IRS, and most of them cost nothing.

IRS Direct Pay

Direct Pay is a free service that moves money straight from your checking or savings account to the IRS. No account or registration is required. You verify your identity each time using information from a prior-year return, pick a reason for the payment (balance due, extension, estimated tax, and so on), enter your bank details, and choose the withdrawal date. The IRS credits you as of the date you selected, though the withdrawal itself can take up to two business days.1Internal Revenue Service. Direct Pay Help When you submit, you get an eight-digit confirmation number. Save it.

IRS Online Account

An IRS Online Account lets you view your balance, see your payment history, and make payments for Form 1040 and several other common forms.2Internal Revenue Service. Payments Setup takes a one-time identity verification. After that, everything lives in one dashboard, which is useful if you make payments regularly or need to confirm what you’ve already sent.

Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS)

EFTPS is a free Treasury-run system. Enrollment is required, and the IRS mails a PIN to your address on file within five to seven business days after you sign up.3U.S. Department of the Treasury. Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) Because of that lead time, it’s a poor choice if the deadline is days away, but it’s well suited to recurring estimated payments and scheduling ahead.4Internal Revenue Service. Credit Card, Debit Card, or Digital Wallet

The IRS accepts card and digital wallet payments through two approved processors, Pay1040 and ACI Payments. The processors charge a convenience fee that the IRS does not share in.5Internal Revenue Service. Pay Your Taxes by Debit or Credit Card or Digital Wallet

  • Credit cards: 1.75% (Pay1040) or 1.85% (ACI Payments), minimum $2.50
  • Consumer debit cards: $2.15 (Pay1040) or $2.10 (ACI Payments)
  • Digital wallets (PayPal, Venmo, Click to Pay): same fee structure as cards, through the same processors

On a $5,000 credit card payment, that’s roughly $87.50 to $92.50 in fees. Direct Pay or EFTPS avoids the cost entirely for larger balances.

Same-Day Wire Transfer

If a payment has to arrive today, your bank can send a same-day wire. Download the Same-Day Taxpayer Worksheet from IRS.gov, fill it out, and bring it to your bank.6Internal Revenue Service. Same-Day Wire Federal Tax Payments If you’re paying for more than one form or tax period, complete a separate worksheet for each payment. Your bank will likely charge its own wire fee, and each bank has its own cutoff time, so call before you go.

Mailing a Check or Money Order

If you’d rather pay by mail, send a check or money order along with Form 1040-V, the payment voucher for individuals. The voucher tells the IRS which taxpayer and tax year the payment belongs to.7Internal Revenue Service. About Form 1040-V, Payment Voucher for Individuals Download it from IRS.gov or use the copy included in a paper filing packet.

Filling Out the Voucher and Check

On Form 1040-V, enter your name, address, Social Security Number (or ITIN), the tax year, and the exact dollar amount you’re paying.8Internal Revenue Service. Form 1040-V (2025) On a joint return, list the primary taxpayer (the one named first on the return) and that person’s SSN first on the voucher. Make the check payable to “United States Treasury” and write your SSN and the tax year on it, for example, “2025 Form 1040,” in the memo line. The amount on the check must match the amount on the voucher exactly.

Where to Mail Your Payment

The IRS uses two processing centers for Form 1040-V. The address depends on the state you live in.9Internal Revenue Service. Form 1040-V Filing Addresses for Taxpayers and Tax Professionals

  • Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, or Texas: Internal Revenue Service, P.O. Box 1214, Charlotte, NC 28201-1214
  • All other states and the District of Columbia: Internal Revenue Service, P.O. Box 931000, Louisville, KY 40293-1000
  • Outside the United States, including APO and FPO addresses: Internal Revenue Service, P.O. Box 1303, Charlotte, NC 28201-1303, USA

These addresses can change between filing years, so check the current Form 1040-V instructions before mailing. Don’t staple the check or the voucher to your return; place everything loose in the envelope.8Internal Revenue Service. Form 1040-V (2025)

Proving You Mailed on Time

Federal law treats a U.S. Postal Service postmark as the date of payment. If the postmark is on or before the deadline, the payment counts as on time even if it reaches the IRS days later.10Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S.C. 7502 – Timely Mailing Treated as Timely Filing and Paying Certified mail with return receipt gives you both the postmark and proof the IRS received the envelope.

Certain private carriers also qualify, but only specific service levels. FedEx Ground doesn’t count; FedEx Priority Overnight does. The designated list includes FedEx Standard Overnight, UPS Next Day Air, UPS 2nd Day Air, DHL Express Worldwide, and others.11Internal Revenue Service. Private Delivery Services (PDS) Check the IRS list before shipping if you use a private carrier.

Paying With Cash

The IRS accepts cash through retail partners in a network called VanillaDirect. Participating chains include Dollar General, Family Dollar, CVS Pharmacy, Walgreens, Walmart, 7-Eleven, Kroger, and Circle K, among others.12Internal Revenue Service. Pay With Cash at a Retail Partner

Start on the IRS payment portal and select the cash option. The system generates a barcode you take to a participating store, where the cashier scans it and accepts your cash. Each payment is capped at $500 and carries a $1.50 processing fee.12Internal Revenue Service. Pay With Cash at a Retail Partner There’s no daily limit on the number of payments, though monthly and annual limits may apply.

Local IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers can help in person, but they don’t always accept cash on site. Call ahead to confirm services and whether you need an appointment.

If You Cannot Pay in Full

Sending something is better than sending nothing. The late-payment penalty starts at 0.5% of the unpaid balance per month and can reach 25%, and interest accrues on top of that.13Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S.C. 6651 – Failure to File Tax Return or to Pay Tax Entering an IRS payment plan cuts the late-payment penalty in half, from 0.5% to 0.25% per month, while the plan is active.

A short-term plan gives you up to 180 days with no setup fee, whether you apply online, by phone, or by mail. If you need longer, a monthly installment agreement is available with a setup fee that depends on how you apply and how you plan to pay:14Internal Revenue Service. Payment Plans; Installment Agreements

  • Direct debit from a bank account: $22 online, or $107 by phone, mail, or in person
  • Other methods (check, Direct Pay, card): $69 online, or $178 by phone, mail, or in person

Low-income taxpayers may qualify for a fee waiver or reduction. If you can’t realistically pay the full debt at all, the IRS may accept a reduced amount through an Offer in Compromise; the application fee is $205, waived for taxpayers who meet low-income certification guidelines.15Internal Revenue Service. Confirming Your Payment Posted

After you pay, check your IRS Online Account. It shows your balance, payment history, and the date each transaction posted. Electronic payments through Direct Pay usually appear within two business days of the scheduled withdrawal.1Internal Revenue Service. Direct Pay Help If you mailed a check and it hasn’t cleared your bank within two weeks, the IRS recommends calling 800-829-1040.16Internal Revenue Service. General Procedural Questions

Keep your confirmation numbers, canceled checks, and receipts. The IRS recommends holding tax records for at least three years from the date you filed the return they relate to.17Internal Revenue Service. How Long Should I Keep Records Once a payment fully processes, it appears on your official tax transcript, which you can request through your Online Account if you ever need proof for a lender, court, or other agency.
