Seniors can get their taxes prepared for free through several federally supported programs. The two best fits for older adults are Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) and AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, both of which train volunteers specifically on retirement income, Social Security, and pension issues. The broader Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program and free IRS online filing tools round out the options. Together these programs prepare millions of returns each year at no charge, at a time when paid preparers commonly charge $150 to $600.
Tax Counseling for the Elderly and AARP Foundation Tax-Aide
TCE is the program built for you. It focuses on taxpayers age 60 and older, and its volunteers get extra training on the returns retirees actually file: pension and annuity distributions, required minimum withdrawals from retirement accounts, and the rules that decide how much of a Social Security check is taxable.
That training matters. Working out the taxable portion of Social Security, or catching the additional standard deduction for seniors, trips up a lot of people every year. TCE volunteers do these calculations routinely. Most TCE sites open in early February and run through mid-April, with some extending hours if demand is heavy.
AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is the largest volunteer tax program in the country and operates as part of the broader TCE network. Tax-Aide focuses on taxpayers over 50 with low-to-moderate income, but there is no age restriction and no income cutoff for getting help.1AARP. Tax-Aide volunteers handle common forms including schedules for interest, dividends, capital gains, and itemized deductions, and they can process simple self-employment income. Sites operate out of thousands of neighborhood libraries, senior centers, and community buildings, which makes this one of the most geographically accessible options for older adults who would rather not drive far during tax season.
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)
If no TCE or Tax-Aide site is convenient, VITA is the wider federal option. It generally serves taxpayers with annual income of roughly $70,000 or less, along with people with disabilities and those with limited English proficiency. Every volunteer completes IRS training and certification each year before the season opens.
VITA sites handle straightforward returns: W-2 wage income, Social Security benefits, interest, dividends, and common credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit. Many sites also prepare state returns alongside the federal filing.3Internal Revenue Service. Free Online Filing From Home
If you would rather file from your own computer, three no-cost tools are available through the IRS. The right one depends on your income and how much guidance you want.
- IRS Free File. If your adjusted gross income is $89,000 or less, you can use brand-name tax software at no cost. The software walks you through each question and calculates your return. Multiple providers participate, and each sets its own eligibility rules within the overall AGI cap, so compare offers before choosing one.4Internal Revenue Service. IRS Free File
- IRS Direct File. This newer IRS-built tool lets you file a federal return directly with the agency at no cost. For the 2025 filing season, Direct File was available in 24 states and supported common situations including retired seniors with Social Security income. - Free File Fillable Forms. Available at any income level, this option gives you electronic versions of IRS forms you fill in yourself. It does basic math but offers no guidance, so it works best if you already know how to prepare your own return and just need a free way to e-file.6Internal Revenue Service. Free File Fillable Forms
All three let you file electronically and set up direct deposit for your refund. They do not prepare state returns on their own, though some Free File partners include a free state return in their offer.
What Free Tax Help Cannot Handle
Free tax prep has real limits. Volunteers are trained for common return types, and if your situation falls outside their scope, they are required to say so rather than guess. Knowing this before you go saves a wasted trip.
VITA and TCE sites generally cannot prepare returns that involve:
- Rental income, with narrow exceptions like renting your home for fewer than 15 days.
- Complex self-employment, meaning a business with employees, net losses, depreciation, business use of your home, or expenses above $50,000.7Internal Revenue Service. Out of Scope Situations for VITA/TCE
- Farm income or expenses.
- Digital asset transactions.
- Alternative Minimum Tax or Net Investment Income Tax.
- Complicated capital gains such as futures, options, or K-1 partnership income with unusual items.8AARP Foundation. Tax-Aide: Types of Returns We Can Prepare
- Foreign financial asset reporting.
If your return falls into one of these categories, you will need a paid preparer or professional software.
What to Bring to Your Appointment
Showing up prepared is the single biggest thing you can do to make an appointment go smoothly. Missing a document usually means rescheduling, and open slots fill fast during peak season.
For every person listed on the return, bring:
- A valid government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license, state ID, or passport.9Internal Revenue Service. Checklist for Free Tax Return Preparation
- Social Security cards or official ITIN notices for you, your spouse, and any dependents.
- All income documents: W-2s from employers, Form 1099-R for retirement distributions, Form SSA-1099 for Social Security benefits, Form 1099-INT for bank interest, and any other 1099s you received.10Internal Revenue Service. Gather Your Documents
- Health insurance records: Forms 1095-A, 1095-B, or 1095-C if you received them.
- Deduction documentation: mortgage interest statements (Form 1098), property tax bills, medical receipts, and charitable donation records if you plan to itemize.
- A copy of last year’s federal and state returns.
To have your refund deposited directly, bring a voided check or a document showing your bank’s routing number and your account number. The IRS can only deposit refunds into accounts in your name, your spouse’s name, or a joint account, and will not split a refund across more than three accounts.11Internal Revenue Service. Before heading out, check whether the location requires an appointment or accepts walk-ins. Many community centers and libraries that host these programs have limited hours and high demand, especially in early-to-mid February and the first two weeks of April. Booking early in the season is the easiest way to avoid long waits. Arrive a few minutes before your slot so a site coordinator can review your paperwork and match you with a certified preparer.
Deadline to Keep in Mind
