Where Can I Get a New Social Security Card?

To get a new Social Security card, you have three options, all free: apply online through your my Social Security account at ssa.gov, visit a local SSA field office or Card Center in person, or mail a completed Form SS-5 with your original documents to your local field office.¹ Before you start, know that the SSA itself says a Social Security card is not an identification document and that most tasks only require the number, not the physical card.² If you actually need the card, here’s how each route works.

Documents You’ll Need

Every replacement application requires proof of identity. Federal regulations say the document must include your name plus either your date of birth, your parents’ names, a photograph, or a physical description.³ A birth certificate alone doesn’t satisfy the identity requirement, even though it can prove age or citizenship separately.

The most commonly accepted identity documents are:

A current U.S. driver’s license
A state-issued non-driver ID card
A valid U.S. passport

If you don’t have one and can’t get one within 10 days, the SSA will consider alternatives such as an employee ID card, a school ID, a health insurance card (not Medicare), or a U.S. military ID. These backups must be current and show your name along with identifying information such as your date of birth.⁴

If your U.S. citizenship isn’t already on file with the SSA, you’ll also need to prove it, usually with a U.S. birth certificate, a Certificate of Naturalization, or a U.S. passport.³ Non-citizens must submit current, unexpired immigration documents showing work authorization, such as a Form I-766 Employment Authorization Document.⁵

One rule catches people off guard. The SSA accepts only originals or copies certified by the issuing agency. Photocopies and notarized copies are rejected.⁶

Applying Online

The fastest route is the my Social Security portal at ssa.gov, but it’s only open to you if all of the following are true: you’re a U.S. citizen 18 or older, you have a U.S. mailing address, you hold a driver’s license or state ID from a participating jurisdiction, and you aren’t changing your name, date of birth, place of birth, or gender on the card.⁷ Not every state participates. Check whether yours does at ssa.gov/ssnumber before you begin.

If you qualify, create or log into your account, verify your identity with your state-issued ID information, and submit the request. Nothing needs to be mailed and no office visit is required.

Applying in Person

If you don’t qualify online, the next best route is visiting an SSA location. The agency runs two types of facilities: full-service field offices that handle all Social Security business, and dedicated Card Centers that focus on issuing cards and updating personal information.⁸ Find the nearest one by entering your zip code into the Office Locator at ssa.gov/locator.

Some offices take walk-ins, others require appointments, so check before you go. Bring a completed Form SS-5 (available at ssa.gov/forms/ss-5.pdf) along with your original supporting documents.¹ The form asks for your name as it should appear on the card, your name at birth if different, your Social Security number, date and place of birth, citizenship status, and your parents’ names. An agent reviews everything on the spot.

Applying by Mail

If you can’t visit an office or use the online portal, mail your completed Form SS-5 and original documents to your local field office. It works, but it means sending sensitive items like your passport or birth certificate through the mail. A trackable shipping method is a smart precaution. The SSA returns your originals by standard mail after verifying them.⁹

How Long It Takes

Once the SSA has everything it needs, expect the replacement card by mail within 7 to 10 business days.¹⁰ If the SSA has to verify a document with the issuing agency, it can take longer. If your card hasn’t arrived after about three weeks, contact your local field office or call 1-800-772-1213 to check the status.¹¹

Yearly and Lifetime Limits

You’re capped at three replacement cards per year and ten in your lifetime.⁹ Past those limits, you have to show a compelling reason to get another one.

Several situations don’t count toward the limits at all. Cards issued for a legal name change don’t count. Cards issued to add or remove a restrictive legend (such as “Valid for Work Only with DHS Authorization”) don’t count. The SSA also grants exceptions for hardship, such as needing the card to access government social services, and for correcting SSA errors or confirming non-receipt of a previously requested card.¹²

Updating the Card After a Name Change

If your legal name has changed through marriage, divorce, or a court order, update your Social Security record as soon as you can. A mismatch between your name on file with the SSA and your name at other agencies, especially the IRS, can cause problems with tax refunds and benefit payments.

For a name change, submit the same identity proof required for a standard replacement, plus a document proving the legal change. That can be a marriage certificate, a divorce decree, a Certificate of Naturalization, or a court order granting the name change. The SSA lets some name changes start online in participating states, but you may need to finish the process in person within 45 days of the online filing. Name-change cards don’t count toward your three-per-year or ten-per-lifetime limits.¹²

Getting a Card for a Child

A parent or legal guardian can request a replacement for a minor. You’ll need to prove the child’s identity (a birth certificate typically works for both age and citizenship), prove your own identity with a document like a driver’s license or passport, and in some cases show your relationship to the child with a court custody order or a placement letter from a state social services agency.⁴

On Form SS-5, enter the child’s information in the main fields and note your relationship in the signature section. Children can’t use the online system, which requires the applicant to be 18 or older, so you’ll need to visit an office or mail the application.⁷

If Your Card Was Stolen

A stolen card carries a risk beyond the inconvenience of replacing it. If you think someone may use your number, the SSA directs you to report the theft to the Federal Trade Commission at IdentityTheft.gov, where you can create a recovery plan and place fraud alerts on your credit reports.¹³ You can then request a replacement through any of the three methods above. In rare cases of confirmed, ongoing identity theft, the SSA may assign a new Social Security number, though this is a last resort with its own complications for your credit history and records.
