Where Can I Get a Loan Against My Tax Refund?

You can get a loan against your tax refund from H&R Block, Jackson Hewitt, Liberty Tax, or TurboTax. All four offer refund advances at 0% APR with no loan fees in 2026. The catch is that you generally have to file your return through the provider offering the advance, and your refund is routed through the lender before any of it reaches you.

In-Office Refund Advance Providers

Two national chains dominate if you want to sit down with a preparer.

H&R Block partners with Pathward, N.A. on its Refund Advance. Approved amounts come in six fixed tiers: $250, $500, $750, $1,250, $2,500, or $4,000, at 0% APR and no loan fees. You have to file at a participating H&R Block office and apply between January 2, 2026, and March 15, 2026. Jackson Hewitt offers advances of $500, $750, $1,000, $1,500, $2,500, and $3,500 from January 2 through April 15, 2026. To qualify for the top $3,500 tier, your expected refund must be at least $5,000. Jackson Hewitt also runs an Early Tax Refund Advance before the regular filing season, in amounts from $300 to $1,500. If you took the early advance, the minimum expected refund for the regular advance rises to $7,100.2Jackson Hewitt. Liberty Tax offers a much smaller product. Its Easy100 Advance is exactly $100, no interest, no fees, issued through Republic Bank & Trust Company. Your expected refund must be at least $100, and the loan is available from the start of the filing season through April 15, 2026.3Liberty Tax. Easy $100 Loan If you need more than $100, Liberty Tax isn’t the place to get it.

The loan itself is free at all three chains. Tax preparation is not. A basic Form 1040 with a state return averages around $220, and returns with itemized deductions or extra schedules cost more. That fee comes out of your refund along with the loan repayment.

Online Refund Advances

TurboTax is the main option if you’d rather not visit an office. Through its partnership with Credit Karma, TurboTax offers a 0% APR advance of up to 50% of your expected refund, capped at $4,000. You have to open a Credit Karma Money checking account to receive the money. Approval depends on factors including your income, tax situation, employment history, and Credit Karma account activity.4TurboTax. Tax Refund Advance – Get Up to $4,000

TurboTax may decline applicants who have outstanding government debt that could trigger a garnishment, or who left unpaid balances on a prior-year refund advance.4TurboTax. Tax Refund Advance – Get Up to $4,000 If you owed on last year’s advance, expect to be locked out this year.

How the Loan Gets Repaid

You never write a check. The provider opens a temporary bank account in your name and directs your refund into it. Once the IRS deposits the money, the lender pulls out the loan amount, any preparation fees, and any other charges. Whatever’s left is sent to you.6Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Tax Refund Tips: Understanding Refund Advance Loans and Checks

That’s where the real cost picture sharpens. The loan carries no interest, but the preparation fee still gets deducted, and so does any other charge the provider tacks on. Do the math with your own numbers before you sign.

What Happens If Your Refund Comes In Smaller

Your advance is based on what the preparer or software calculates you’re owed. The IRS makes its own determination. If it adjusts your return downward because of an error, a disallowed credit, or extra review, your actual refund can come in lower than the advance you already received, and you can be responsible for the difference.6Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Tax Refund Tips: Understanding Refund Advance Loans and Checks

Refunds also shrink for reasons unrelated to your return. The Treasury Department’s Bureau of the Fiscal Service can offset your refund to cover past-due child support, federal agency debts, state income tax obligations, and certain state unemployment compensation debts.7Internal Revenue Service. Reduced Refund The offset happens before the lender can collect, so the temporary account receives less than expected and you may owe the lender out of pocket.

This is the biggest hidden risk. The loan feels free because there’s no interest, but it’s only free if your refund arrives in full. Before borrowing, confirm you don’t have debts that could trigger an offset, and be sure every credit you claim is one you genuinely qualify for.

If You Claim the EITC or Additional Child Tax Credit

Filers claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit face a mandatory hold. Under the PATH Act, the IRS cannot release any part of the refund before mid-February, even if you file on day one. For the 2026 filing season, most EITC and ACTC refunds won’t reach bank accounts until around March 2, assuming you e-filed with direct deposit and the return had no issues.8Internal Revenue Service. When to Expect Your Refund if You Claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit

That wait is exactly why EITC and ACTC filers are the most common customers for refund advances. It also raises the stakes. A longer delay is more time for the IRS to flag something, and these credits are among the most frequently audited. If the credit is disallowed after you’ve spent the advance, you owe the lender against a refund that isn’t coming.

What You Need to Apply

The documentation is straightforward, but a missing piece can stall or kill the application.

  • Social Security numbers for you, your spouse if filing jointly, and any dependents claimed.
  • Income documents: W-2s from employers and 1099-NECs for freelance or contract work. For the 2026 filing season, employers must furnish W-2s by February 2, 2026, because the usual January 31 deadline falls on a Saturday. The same February 2 deadline applies to 1099-NEC forms.9Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 752, Filing Forms W-2 and W-3
  • A government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license or passport, to satisfy the federal customer identification rules banks follow before opening accounts or issuing loans.10eCFR. 31 CFR 1020.220 – Customer Identification Program Requirements for Banks
  • A completed tax return. The provider calculates your expected refund from a finished Form 1040, so everything else has to be in place before the loan application moves.

Don’t estimate income to speed things up. If your numbers don’t match what the IRS has on file, the refund calculation is wrong, and the advance may exceed what you’re actually owed.

How Fast You Get the Money

Speed is the point. At Jackson Hewitt, approved customers who take the advance on a prepaid card typically get the funds the same day, often within minutes. Direct deposit takes one to five business days.11Jackson Hewitt. How Fast Do You Get a Tax Refund Loan? H&R Block follows a similar pattern: Emerald Card loads are quick, while transfers to an external bank account take longer.1H&R Block. Refund Advance Loan

If same-day access matters, choose the provider’s prepaid card. You give up the convenience of having the money in your regular account, but you gain days.

Cheaper Ways to Get Your Refund

Before committing, ask whether you actually need a loan. E-filing with direct deposit is the fastest route to your money without borrowing. The IRS typically processes e-filed returns within three weeks, and refund status becomes available within 24 hours of filing.12Internal Revenue Service. Refunds Bridge the three-week gap without borrowing and you keep the whole refund.

If your income is $69,000 or less, the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program provides free preparation, which wipes out the $200-plus fee that eats into refunds at paid providers.13Internal Revenue Service. Free Tax Return Preparation for Qualifying Taxpayers For self-filers with adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less, IRS Free File offers guided tax software at no cost.14Internal Revenue Service. E-file: Do Your Taxes for Free Pair either with direct deposit and your full refund lands in your account without a dollar going to preparation fees or loan mechanics.

If you already bank with a credit union, a small personal loan or line of credit can bridge the gap at lower effective cost than paying for tax prep just to access an advance. It’s worth a phone call before signing on with a tax-office loan.
