Where Can I Cash a Treasury Check: Banks, Stores, and Apps

You can cash a U.S. Treasury check at your own bank or credit union, at some banks where you don’t hold an account, at major retail stores like Walmart, or at a licensed check-cashing business. Depositing it into an account you own is the cheapest and fastest route: federal law requires the funds to be available by the next business day. Everywhere else, expect to pay a fee and to show identification.

Endorse the Check and Bring ID

Sign the back of the check in the endorsement area at the top, matching the name printed on the front as closely as you can. If someone else needs to cash it for you, the endorsement has to show that: for example, “John Jones by Mary Jones.”1eCFR. 31 CFR Part 240 – Indorsement and Payment of Checks Drawn on the United States Treasury

Bring a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID. A state driver’s license, U.S. passport, military ID, or state ID card works at most locations. Every place that cashes checks will verify your identity before releasing money, and the name on your ID should match the name on the check.

Your Own Bank or Credit Union

This is the fastest and cheapest option. Under Regulation CC, your bank has to make funds from a deposited Treasury check available for withdrawal no later than the next business day after deposit, as long as the check is payable to you.2eCFR. 12 CFR 229.10 – Next-Day Availability That rule applies whether you deposit at the teller window or at one of the bank’s own ATMs. Most banks charge account holders nothing to cash or deposit a government check.

If you deposit a Treasury check into an account that isn’t in the payee’s name — say, a check made out to a relative going into your own account — the bank may take up to two business days to release the funds.3eCFR. 12 CFR Part 229 – Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks

A Bank Where You Don’t Have an Account

No federal law requires a bank to cash a check for someone who isn’t a customer.4HelpWithMyBank.gov. Can a Bank Refuse to Cash a Check Some will do it as a courtesy; others refuse outright.5Federal Reserve Consumer Help. Can a Bank Refuse to Cash a Check Banks that agree to help a non-customer often charge a flat fee and cap the amount they’ll handle. Call ahead before you make the trip.

Walmart and Other Retail Stores

National retail chains cash pre-printed government checks at their customer service desks, and they usually stay open into the evening and on weekends when bank branches are closed. Walmart charges a maximum of $4 on checks up to $1,000 and a maximum of $8 on checks above that amount.6Walmart. Check Cashing The standard limit at Walmart is $5,000, which rises to $7,500 from January through April for tax refund season. The fee comes out of the payout, so you walk away with the face value minus the charge.

Other grocery and retail chains offer similar services. Limits and prices vary, so ask at the desk what the store’s maximum is and what it will cost before handing over the check.

Licensed Check-Cashing Services

Check-cashing storefronts convert checks to cash and often keep long hours, including evenings and weekends. They operate under state licensing rules that cap what they can charge. Fees generally run from about 1% to 6% of the check’s face value depending on the state and the provider, so a $3,000 Treasury check could cost anywhere from $30 to $180 to cash. Ask for the fee schedule up front; licensed businesses are generally required to post their rates.

These services matter for people without a bank account or in areas with limited banking. The percentage-based fee structure does mean the cost scales with the check, which makes this the most expensive route for larger payments.

Mobile Apps and ATMs

Most major banks accept Treasury checks through their mobile apps. You photograph the front and back of the endorsed check and submit it. Government checks deposited this way generally qualify for the same next-business-day availability as in-person deposits at your own bank.2eCFR. 12 CFR 229.10 – Next-Day Availability Banks often set monthly dollar limits on mobile deposits, so check your app before submitting a large check. Deposits at your bank’s own ATM also qualify for next-day availability.

What Happens at the Counter

Financial institutions and retailers check the legitimacy of Treasury checks through the Treasury Check Verification System, a tool run by the Bureau of the Fiscal Service.7Bureau of the Fiscal Service. Frequently Asked Questions for Financial Institutions and Agencies The clerk enters the routing number, check number, and amount, and the system confirms whether the check was issued and is still payable. It flags checks that were canceled or reported stolen.8U.S. Department of the Treasury. Treasury Check Verification System Checks older than 13 months won’t appear at all, because they’re past the one-year negotiation deadline.

If you cash a check for more than $10,000, the financial institution has to file a Currency Transaction Report with the federal government.9FinCEN. Notice to Customers: A CTR Reference Guide Multiple transactions on the same day that add up to more than $10,000 trigger the same requirement. It’s a routine anti-fraud filing and doesn’t mean anything is wrong with your check. You’ll just need to show ID so the institution can complete the report.

If the Check Is More Than a Year Old

A Treasury check is valid for one year from the issue date. Every Treasury check carries the words “VOID AFTER ONE YEAR” above the disbursing officer’s signature.10Bureau of the Fiscal Service. Cancellations, Deposits, Reclamations, and Claims for Checks Drawn on the US After that, the Treasury isn’t required to honor it, and Federal Reserve Banks must refuse payment.11GovInfo. 31 USC 3328 – Paying Checks and Drafts The money goes back to the agency that issued it.

You don’t lose the payment. The underlying obligation still stands.11GovInfo. 31 USC 3328 – Paying Checks and Drafts To get a replacement, contact the agency that authorized the original payment — the IRS for a tax refund, the Social Security Administration for benefits, and so on. The agency can certify a new payment.12eCFR. 31 CFR Part 245 – Claims on Account of Treasury Checks Have the check date, amount, and check number ready if you can. The same process applies if the check was lost, stolen, or destroyed rather than expired; contact the issuing agency as soon as possible.

Special Situations

A Check Made Out to Someone Who Died

What you can do depends on the type of payment and whether the estate has an appointed executor or administrator. An executor can endorse and cash checks for certain payment types, including tax refunds and payments for goods and services.13eCFR. 31 CFR 240.15 – Checks Issued to Deceased Payees Recurring benefit payments like Social Security cannot be cashed by an executor and have to be returned to the issuing agency. If no executor or administrator has been appointed, every check issued to a deceased payee must go back to the agency so it can determine who is entitled to the money. A recurring benefit check issued after the payee’s death is not payable at all.

Cashing on Someone Else’s Behalf With Power of Attorney

If you hold power of attorney for someone who cannot cash their own check, the endorsement has to show you are signing in a representative capacity, for example, “John Jones by Paul Smith, attorney-in-fact for John Jones.”14eCFR. 31 CFR 240.17 – Powers of Attorney The power of attorney must be executed under applicable state or federal law. For recurring benefit payments, the document has to specifically describe the purpose the checks are issued for and confirm that it is not being used to assign the payment to someone else. The Treasury generally pays the check without requiring proof of authority at the counter but may ask for documentation later if a dispute arises.

Skipping the Paper Check Entirely

Federal benefit payments are now required to be made electronically in most cases, either by direct deposit to a bank or credit union account or to a Direct Express prepaid debit card.15Go Direct. Go Direct Home If you keep receiving paper checks and want to switch, enrollment avoids cashing fees and typically gets the money to you faster than any paper deposit.
