If you e-file and choose direct deposit, the IRS refund schedule points to money in your account within 21 days of the IRS accepting your return. Paper returns take six weeks or more. Claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit pushes your earliest possible refund to mid-February, and errors, identity checks, or debts owed to other agencies can stretch things further.
The 2026 Clock Starts January 26
The IRS began accepting 2025 tax year returns on January 26, 2026, and the filing deadline is April 15, 2026.1Internal Revenue Service. IRS Announces First Day of 2026 Filing Season Your 21-day countdown starts when the IRS accepts the return, not when you submit it through your software. Filing on opening day means your window starts that day.
How Long Each Filing Method Takes
Two choices drive nearly all of your wait time: whether you e-file or mail a paper return, and whether you take direct deposit or a mailed check.
- E-file with direct deposit: up to 21 days from IRS acceptance. This is the fastest combination.2Internal Revenue Service. Refunds
- E-file with a paper check: 21 days of processing plus several weeks for the check to arrive by mail.3Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Refund?
- Paper return with direct deposit: six weeks or more of processing, then the electronic transfer.2Internal Revenue Service. Refunds
- Paper return with a paper check: the slowest route, six or more weeks of processing followed by mail delivery.4Internal Revenue Service. Why It May Take Longer Than 21 Days for Some Taxpayers to Receive Their Federal Refund
These are the standard tracks. A return that needs correction or extra review takes longer, and the IRS will send a letter if it needs more information from you.
EITC and ACTC Refunds Are Held Until February 15
If you claim the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit, federal law bars the IRS from releasing your refund before February 15, no matter how early you file.5Taxpayer Advocate Service. Held or Stopped Refunds The hold covers your entire refund, not just the portion tied to those credits. The rule comes from the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act, which gives the IRS time to verify the claims and screen for fraud.6GovInfo. Public Law 114-113
In practice, most EITC and ACTC refunds start landing in late February or early March for e-filers with direct deposit. Filing on January 26 rather than February 10 doesn’t change that: the February 15 hold applies either way.
What Pushes You Past 21 Days
Errors on the Return
Math mistakes, missing signatures on a paper return, and mismatched information (a name that doesn’t match a Social Security number, for instance) all send a return to manual review. If the withholding you reported doesn’t line up with what your employer sent on Form W-2, the IRS may pause processing to reconcile the figures.7Internal Revenue Service. W-2 – Additional, Incorrect, Lost, Non-Receipt, Omitted
Identity Verification
If the IRS suspects a fraudulent return was filed in your name, it freezes the refund until you verify your identity, sometimes by filing Form 14039. Identity theft cases run far longer than a standard review; at the end of fiscal year 2024, the average resolution time was roughly 676 days, well above the IRS’s stated 120-day goal.8Taxpayer Advocate Service. Identity Theft – Processing and Refund Delays Are Harming Victims of Tax-Related Identity Theft Respond to any identity verification letter as soon as it arrives.
Refund Offsets for Debts You Owe
The Treasury Offset Program can reduce or seize your refund to cover past-due child support, defaulted federal student loans and other federal nontax debts, state income tax obligations, and certain unemployment compensation debts owed to a state. If your refund is offset, the Bureau of the Fiscal Service mails you a notice naming the agency that received the money.9Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 203, Reduced Refund Disputes go to that agency, not the IRS. For details on the debt itself, call the Treasury Offset Program’s automated line at 800-304-3107.10Taxpayer Advocate Service. Injured Spouse Claims
If you filed jointly and your spouse’s debts could trigger an offset, Form 8379 protects your share of the refund but adds significant processing time. Filed electronically with the joint return, expect about 11 weeks. Filed on paper with the return, about 14 weeks. Filed separately after the return has already been processed, about 8 weeks. Adding a daytime phone number lets the IRS call with questions instead of mailing a letter.11Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 8379
Tracking Your Refund
The IRS runs a free “Where’s My Refund?” tool on IRS.gov and through the IRS2Go mobile app. You’ll need three items exactly as they appear on the filed return: your Social Security number or ITIN, your filing status, and your exact refund amount in whole dollars.12Internal Revenue Service. How Taxpayers Can Check the Status of Their Federal Tax Refund If any of those don’t match, the tool won’t find your return, and there is no alternative lookup. If you don’t remember the refund figure, an IRS online account or a tax transcript will show it.3Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Refund?
When to Check
You can start checking 24 hours after the IRS accepts an e-filed return. For a paper return, wait at least four weeks.12Internal Revenue Service. How Taxpayers Can Check the Status of Their Federal Tax Refund The tool refreshes once a day, overnight, and is usually offline between 4 and 5 a.m. Eastern time.3Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Refund? Multiple checks in a single day won’t show new information.
What the Statuses Mean
The tool moves your return through three phases.12Internal Revenue Service. How Taxpayers Can Check the Status of Their Federal Tax Refund “Return Received” means the IRS has your return and it’s in the processing queue; this is not the same as approval. “Refund Approved” means review is complete and the IRS is preparing to send the money, along with a projected deposit or mailing date. “Refund Sent” means the payment has been released, though your bank may take a few business days to make a direct deposit available.
When to Call the IRS
Don’t call unless the tool tells you to, or these windows have passed with no update: 21 days since acceptance of an e-filed return, or six weeks since you mailed a paper return.4Internal Revenue Service. Why It May Take Longer Than 21 Days for Some Taxpayers to Receive Their Federal Refund If a paper return still doesn’t appear in the system after six months, the IRS suggests resubmitting it, preferably electronically.3Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Refund?
If the Refund Never Arrives
A Check That Didn’t Show Up
When the tool says a check was sent but you haven’t received it, you can start a refund trace. Call 800-829-1954 for the automated system or 800-829-1040 for a live representative, or mail Form 3911. Joint filers can’t use the automated line and must speak to a representative or use the form. If the check was never cashed, the IRS cancels it and reissues the refund. If someone else cashed it, the Bureau of the Fiscal Service investigates, and that step alone can take up to six weeks before a replacement is considered.13Internal Revenue Service. Refund Inquiries
Direct Deposit to the Wrong Account
Results depend on the error. If the routing or account number fails IRS validation, the IRS automatically switches to a paper check. If the numbers pass validation but the bank rejects the deposit, the IRS reissues the refund once the bank returns the funds. The hardest case is when the wrong number belongs to someone else’s real account and the bank accepts the deposit. There, you have to work with the financial institution to recover the money; the IRS cannot force the bank to return it. If two weeks pass without progress, file Form 3911 so the IRS can contact the bank on your behalf, though banks have up to 90 days to respond and full resolution can take up to 120 days.14Internal Revenue Service. When the IRS Owes You Interest
The IRS has 45 days after your filing deadline, or after the date you actually filed if that’s later, to issue your refund without paying interest. Past that point, interest runs on the refund from the filing deadline until the money is sent.15Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6611 – Interest on Overpayments For the first quarter of 2026, the individual overpayment rate is 7 percent, compounded daily.16Internal Revenue Service. Quarterly Interest Rates You don’t need to request it; the IRS calculates and adds it. If you think the amount is wrong, Form 843 asks for a review.17Internal Revenue Service. Interest Refund interest is taxable, so it goes on next year’s return.
Amended Returns Follow a Different Timeline
If you filed Form 1040-X to correct an earlier return, the schedule above doesn’t apply. Amended returns generally take 8 to 12 weeks to process, and some run up to 16 weeks.18Internal Revenue Service. Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return: Frequently Asked Questions Errors, incomplete information, missing signatures, identity theft complications, or routing to a specialized unit can extend it further. About three weeks after filing, you can check status through the separate “Where’s My Amended Return?” tool, which covers the current year and up to three prior years.19Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Amended Return?
State Refunds Are Separate
Federal and state refunds are handled by different agencies on different schedules. Eight states (Alaska, Florida, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming) have no state income tax, so residents there have no state refund to track. Everyone else should check the relevant state department of revenue for its own tracking tool and timing.
