The Social Security Administration announces the annual cost-of-living adjustment in mid-October, on the same day or within a day or two of the Bureau of Labor Statistics releasing September’s Consumer Price Index report. So the question of when the Social Security COLA is announced each year has a moving but predictable answer: watch the BLS release calendar for the September CPI, and the SSA follows immediately. For the 2027 COLA, the September 2026 CPI data is scheduled for October 14, 2026, so the announcement is expected around that date.1U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Schedule of Upcoming Releases
Why the Timing Is Locked to Mid-October
The COLA formula requires September inflation data, so the announcement cannot come any earlier. By law, the SSA compares the average CPI-W for the third quarter of the current year (July, August, and September) with the average CPI-W for the third quarter of the last year a COLA took effect. The percentage difference, rounded to the nearest tenth, is the COLA.2Social Security Administration. Latest Cost-of-Living Adjustment
The BLS typically publishes the September CPI report between October 10 and October 15. Once the number is public, the SSA runs the calculation and issues its announcement the same day or shortly after. In a normal year, that puts the news in the second or third week of October.
When the Announcement Slips
Federal law requires the SSA to announce the COLA before November 1, which gives the agency a narrow buffer if the CPI release is delayed. That buffer mattered in 2025. A partial government shutdown that began October 1, 2025 furloughed more than 2,000 BLS employees and halted production of the September CPI report. Because the November 1 deadline still applied, the BLS recalled some staff specifically to finish the report. The data came out on October 24, 2025, and the SSA announced the 2.8 percent COLA the same day, about nine days later than usual. Adjusted benefit payments still began on schedule in January 2026.3AARP. Will the Shutdown Affect the COLA Announcement4Federal News Network. The practical rule: if you don’t see the announcement in the second week of October, check whether the September CPI itself has been released. The SSA is waiting on that data, not sitting on the number.
When You Learn Your Own New Amount
The October announcement gives the overall percentage. Individual benefit amounts vary based on earnings history, and the SSA sends personalized COLA notices throughout December. If you have a “my Social Security” online account and sign up for digital notices by mid-November, you can see your new amount up to three weeks earlier than a mailed letter would arrive. Notices appear in the online Message Center starting in early December, and paper notices go out over the course of the month.5Social Security Administration. When the Higher Payments Arrive
The COLA takes effect with December benefits, which are paid in January. For the roughly 71 million Social Security beneficiaries, the 2026 increase showed up in January 2026 payments. For the approximately 7.5 million Supplemental Security Income recipients, the higher payment arrived on December 31, 2025, because the January 1 payment date fell on a holiday and SSI checks are issued early in that situation.7Social Security Administration. Social Security Administration Press Release The pattern repeats each year: October announcement, December notices, January payments (late December for SSI when the calendar requires it).
What the 2027 Announcement May Say
The official 2027 COLA won’t be known until the September 2026 CPI drops, but running estimates give a sense of where things are heading. As of mid-2026, the Senior Citizens League forecasts a 3.8 percent COLA for 2027, and independent policy analyst Mary Johnson estimates it could reach 4.7 percent.8CNBC. Social Security COLA 2027 Inflation Estimate The projections reflect a pickup in inflation during 2026; the CPI-W rose 4.4 percent over the 12 months ending in May 2026, driven by increases in fuel oil, gasoline, and airfare prices. These figures are preliminary. The final number depends entirely on July, August, and September 2026 CPI-W data.
A Quick Reference for the Yearly Cycle
- Early to mid-October: BLS releases September CPI.
- Same day or shortly after: SSA announces the COLA percentage.
- Statutory backstop: announcement must happen before November 1.
- Early to late December: personalized COLA notices posted online and mailed.
- January (or late December for SSI): first payment at the new amount.
One boundary worth naming: the COLA is a uniform percentage applied to benefits already being paid. It does not by itself change eligibility rules, Medicare premiums, or the earnings limits that apply to working beneficiaries, though the SSA typically announces related figures like the Social Security wage base alongside the COLA. If the CPI-W third-quarter average is flat or lower than the benchmark, there is no COLA that year, as happened in 2009, 2010, and 2015.9Social Security Administration. COLA History Series In those years, monthly benefits stayed at the same dollar amount, and no October announcement of an increase followed.
