When Is a W-2G Issued? Thresholds, Withholding, and Split Jackpots

A gambling payer issues Form W-2G when your winnings from a single wager or game reach the reporting threshold set for that type of game. Starting in 2026, that threshold is $2,000 for most categories, up from the $1,200 floor that stood for decades, and it will keep adjusting for inflation.1Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Forms W-2G and 5754 Whether the threshold is measured on your gross payout or your net win, and whether a payout-to-wager ratio also has to be met, depends on the game.

Thresholds by Game Type

The IRS now refers to an “applicable reporting threshold” for each category rather than fixed dollar figures per game. For 2026 that threshold is $2,000, and the mechanics for reaching it differ.

Slot Machines and Bingo

You get a W-2G when a single slot pull or bingo game pays $2,000 or more. The casino looks at the gross payout and does not subtract your original wager before checking the threshold.1Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Forms W-2G and 5754 Each winning transaction stands on its own. Win $1,500 on one spin and $1,800 on the next, and neither triggers a form, even though you’re up more than $2,000 for the session.

Keno

Keno is netted. The payer subtracts the price of your winning ticket from the payout, and a W-2G is required when that net figure reaches $2,000 or more from a single game.1Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Forms W-2G and 5754

Horse Racing, Sports Betting, and Other Parimutuel Wagering

Horse racing, dog racing, jai alai, sports betting, and most other wagering transactions have two conditions, and both must be met. Winnings must reach the $2,000 threshold, and the payout must be at least 300 times the amount wagered.1Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Forms W-2G and 5754 A $10 bet that returns $3,500 is reportable: it clears $2,000 and is 350 times the wager. A $50 bet that returns $4,000 is not, because $4,000 is only 80 times the stake.

Poker Tournaments

Poker tournaments are netted like keno. The payer subtracts your buy-in or entry fee from the payout, and a W-2G is filed when net winnings reach $2,000.1Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Forms W-2G and 5754 A $500 buy-in that cashes for $7,000 produces $6,500 in net winnings and gets a form.

Table Games

Blackjack, craps, roulette, and baccarat generally do not produce a W-2G for U.S. citizens and residents. Players buy in with chips at varying amounts over a session, so the house usually can’t pin down your net gain on a single wager the way it can with a slot jackpot. The winnings are still taxable and still belong on your return.2Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 419, Gambling Income and Losses

When Tax Is Withheld at the Same Time

A W-2G doesn’t automatically mean money was taken out of your payout. Withholding is a separate test.

Regular gambling withholding is 24% and applies when proceeds (less the wager) exceed $5,000 from sweepstakes, wagering pools, lotteries, and certain parimutuel pools including horse racing and sports betting. Bingo, keno, and slot machine winnings are exempt from this regular withholding even when the amount is high enough to generate a W-2G.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 3402 – Income Tax Collected at Source

Backup withholding is different. If you don’t hand over a valid Social Security Number or ITIN, or the number you give is wrong, the payer must withhold 24% on reportable winnings, including bingo, keno, and slot machine payouts that would otherwise be exempt.4Internal Revenue Service. Publication 15 (2026), Circular E, Employers Tax Guide

Many states impose their own withholding as well, with rates running from roughly 3% to nearly 11%. When state tax is taken out, it appears in Box 15 of the W-2G.

Nonresident aliens sit outside this framework. Gambling winnings are generally subject to 30% withholding under Chapter 3 unless a tax treaty lowers the rate, and the payer reports them on Form 1042-S rather than Form W-2G. Blackjack, baccarat, craps, roulette, and big-6 wheel winnings are exempt from both withholding and reporting for nonresident aliens.1Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Forms W-2G and 5754

When a Jackpot Is Split Among Several Winners

If two or more people share a winning ticket or jackpot, whoever collects the payout fills out Form 5754 with each winner’s name, address, taxpayer identification number, and share. The payer then issues a separate W-2G to each person for their portion.1Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Forms W-2G and 5754

The reporting and withholding tests still run against the total win, not the individual shares. Three friends who split a $9,000 slot jackpot each receive a W-2G for $3,000, but the $9,000 total was what triggered reporting.1Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Forms W-2G and 5754

What You Have to Provide Before the Payer Issues the Form

Before a casino pays a reportable jackpot, it collects the information it needs to file the W-2G. You’ll be asked for:

  • Your full legal name and address as they appear on government records, so the IRS can match the income to your return.
  • Your Social Security Number or ITIN, usually captured on a Form W-9.5Internal Revenue Service. About Form W-9, Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification
  • Identification numbers from two separate documents. Acceptable options include a driver’s license, passport, Social Security card, military ID, a tribal ID issued by a federally recognized tribe, a voter registration card, or a completed Form W-9.1Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Forms W-2G and 5754

Refusing to provide the information, or giving a wrong TIN, triggers 24% backup withholding and can hold up the payout.

Non-cash prizes count too. If you win a car or other merchandise, the casino determines the fair market value on the date it becomes available to you and reports that amount on the W-2G.6eCFR. 26 CFR 31.3402(q)-1 – Extension of Withholding to Certain Gambling Winnings When withholding applies to a non-cash prize, you may need to bring cash to cover it before you can take possession.

How and When the Form Reaches You

Most casinos hand you a paper W-2G at the moment of payout, at the machine or the cashier’s cage. You leave with an immediate record of the gross winnings, the type of wager, and any tax withheld.

If you didn’t get the form on the spot, the payer must furnish your copy by January 31 of the year after the payment, by mail or electronically if you consented to electronic delivery. The gambling establishment also files a copy with the IRS to match against your return.7Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Forms W-2G and 5754 (Rev. January 2026) Won at more than one place during the year? Expect a separate W-2G from each venue for each qualifying payout.

No W-2G Doesn’t Mean No Tax

All gambling income is taxable, whether or not a W-2G is issued. That includes table game winnings, casual bets, fantasy sports, and sessions where you finished ahead but stayed under the thresholds. Report these amounts on Schedule 1 of Form 1040 regardless of whether any form was issued. Gambling losses can offset winnings only up to the amount you report, and only as an itemized deduction on Schedule A backed by detailed records.2Internal Revenue Service.
