SSI is paid on the first of every month, and each deposit covers the month it arrives in. When the first falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday, the payment moves to the last business day before it, so you get paid a day or two early rather than late.1Social Security Administration. Social Security Act 708 – Delivery of Benefit Checks That single rule explains almost every unusual pay date on the SSI calendar.
The Standard Payment Date
Federal regulations set the first day of each calendar month as the standard SSI payment date, regardless of your age, disability type, or state of residence.2Social Security Administration. 20 CFR 416.502 – Manner of Payment The deposit you receive on the first is your benefit for that same month. A June 1 payment is your June money, not payment for May.
For 2026, the maximum federal SSI amount is $994 for an individual and $1,491 for a couple, reflecting a 2.8 percent cost-of-living adjustment.3Social Security Administration. Social Security Announces 2.8 Percent Benefit Increase for 2026 What you actually receive depends on your countable income and living situation. Wages, other benefits, and living in someone else’s household all reduce the payment. Some states add a supplement, which may arrive bundled with the federal deposit or as a separate state payment.
When the First Falls on a Weekend or Holiday
The Social Security Act requires SSA to deliver benefits on the nearest preceding business day when the first lands on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday.1Social Security Administration. Social Security Act 708 – Delivery of Benefit Checks If the first is a Saturday, you’re paid Friday. If it’s a Sunday, also Friday. If the first is a recognized federal holiday like New Year’s Day, Independence Day, or Labor Day, the payment moves back to the last business day before the holiday.5Social Security Administration. Social Security Handbook 121 – Payment Dates
The shift always goes backward. SSA will not delay a payment to the second or third of the month. In practice, that means you sometimes see your deposit two or even three days early, but never late.
Why You’ll Sometimes Get Two Payments in One Month
New Year’s Day is a federal holiday every year, so the January SSI payment always shifts to the last business day of December. Combined with the regular December payment on December 1 (or earlier, if December 1 is a weekend), that produces two SSI deposits in a single month and then no payment until February 1.
In 2026, the regular December payment arrives on December 1, and the January 2027 payment arrives on Wednesday, December 31. Nothing then hits your account until February 1. If you spend both December deposits as they arrive, you’ll have no SSI income through January. The safer approach is to set aside the late-December deposit and treat it as your January money, because that is what it is.
This double-payment pattern isn’t limited to January. Any time the first of the following month falls on a weekend or holiday, the payment for that month arrives at the end of the previous month, producing two deposits in one month and none on the actual first of the next.
The 2026 Payment Calendar
Based on the standard rule and the 2026 calendar, SSI payment dates for the year fall as follows:
- January: Friday, January 2 (January 1 is New Year’s Day)
- February: Friday, January 30 (February 1 is a Sunday)
- March: Friday, February 27 (March 1 is a Sunday)
- April: Wednesday, April 1
- May: Friday, May 1
- June: Monday, June 1
- July: Wednesday, July 1
- August: Friday, July 31 (August 1 is a Saturday)
- September: Tuesday, September 1
- October: Thursday, October 1
- November: Friday, October 30 (November 1 is a Sunday)
- December: Tuesday, December 1
- January 2027: Thursday, December 31, 2026
Three months in 2026 (February, March, August, and November) pay early because the first falls on a weekend. December pays twice — once at the start of the month and once on December 31 for January 2027.
If You Also Get Social Security
If you receive both SSI and a Social Security benefit (retirement, survivors, or disability), each payment runs on its own schedule. SSI still arrives on the first. Social Security pays on the third of each month for people who also get SSI or who first filed for Social Security before May 1997.6Social Security Administration. Cyclical Payment of Social Security Benefits The same weekend-and-holiday rule applies to the third: if it lands on a non-business day, the payment moves to the last business day before.7Social Security Administration. Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments 2026-2027
Two deposits within the first few days of the month is normal for concurrent recipients. If your Social Security payment isn’t in your account on the first, that isn’t a missing payment — it’s scheduled for the third.
What to Do If Your Payment Doesn’t Arrive
Check with your bank or credit union first. Financial institutions post government deposits at different times of day, and a payment that looks missing in the morning often appears by the end of the business day.8Social Security Administration. How Do I Report a Missing Payment
If the deposit genuinely hasn’t arrived, call SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. local time, Monday through Friday, or visit your local field office.9Social Security Administration. Contact Social Security By Phone SSA will start a trace through the Treasury Department and work to issue a replacement or correct any banking error. Missing payments cannot currently be reported through the online my Social Security portal; you have to call or go in person.8Social Security Administration. How Do I Report a Missing Payment If you still receive a paper check under a Treasury waiver, allow three additional mailing days beyond your scheduled date before reporting it as missing.
New SSI claimants whose first payment is delayed and who face an immediate threat to health or safety — no money for food, shelter, clothing, or medical care — can request an emergency advance payment from a local Social Security office.10Social Security Administration. Understanding Supplemental Security Income Expedited Payments The advance is capped at one month’s benefit or the amount needed for the emergency, whichever is less, and is deducted from future benefits. Only one emergency advance is available per claimant.
