When Does SSA Send Out 1099 Forms? Mailing Dates and Replacements

The Social Security Administration sends out SSA-1099 forms throughout January each year, with a legal deadline of January 31 to get a Social Security Benefit Statement to every beneficiary. Printing and mailing happens in waves, so paper forms typically land in mailboxes between early January and mid-February. If yours hasn’t arrived by then, you can download a replacement from your my Social Security account starting February 1.

The January Mailing Window

Federal law requires the SSA to furnish your benefit statement on or before January 31 of the year following the tax year it covers.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6050F – Returns Relating to Social Security Benefits Because the agency processes millions of statements, the mailing is staggered across the month rather than dropped in a single batch.

That staggering explains a common surprise: two people in the same household can receive their forms days apart. Spouses, roommates, a parent and an adult child living at the same address — the envelopes don’t travel together. It’s not an error and it’s not worth calling about on its own.

The January 31 deadline is the SSA’s obligation to hand the form to the Postal Service, not a promise of when it will reach you. Add normal postal transit time, and most paper forms arrive by early-to-mid February. Working backward from the April 15 federal filing deadline, that still leaves roughly two months to prepare your return.2Internal Revenue Service. When to File

When to Stop Waiting

If your form hasn’t shown up by mid-February, the delay is almost always postal transit rather than a problem with your account. That’s also the point at which waiting stops making sense, because a digital copy is available and free.

Two situations should push you to act sooner rather than later. First, if you moved in the fall and aren’t sure whether the SSA has your current address, assume the form went to the old one. Second, if you’re relying on the paper copy to file early, don’t — pull the digital version and move on.

Downloading Your SSA-1099 Online

The fastest way to get your form is through your my Social Security account. Replacement statements for the most recent tax year become available online on February 1 each year.3Social Security Administration. Get Your Social Security Benefit Statement (SSA-1099)

The digital version is identical to the paper form and is fully accepted by the IRS.

If You Don’t Have an Account Yet

You can create one at ssa.gov/myaccount. The SSA verifies identity through either Login.gov or ID.me, both government-approved credential services. You’ll need to be at least 18, have a Social Security number, provide a valid email address, and set up two-step verification.5Social Security Administration. Create an Account Setting up the account and downloading the form is generally faster than waiting for a mailed replacement.

Requesting a Replacement by Phone or in Person

If you can’t use the online portal, two other options are open:

Phone-requested replacements need processing time plus another postal trip, so plan ahead if April 15 is close. An in-person visit is faster when you need the form immediately and can’t get online.

Make Sure the SSA Has Your Current Address

The SSA prints your form using the mailing address and legal name on file as of December of the prior year. If you moved in the fall but didn’t update your address, the form goes to the old location. That means a delay and a risk that sensitive financial information reaches someone else.

You can update your U.S. mailing address three ways:

Correcting your legal name after a marriage, divorce, or court order takes more paperwork. The SSA requires proof of identity, your new legal name, and documentation of the name-change event before issuing an updated card and updating your records.8Social Security Administration. How Do I Change or Correct My Name on My Social Security Number Card Make address and name changes well before December so your January mailing goes to the right place with the right name.

Who Doesn’t Get an SSA-1099

Two groups of people wait for a form that isn’t coming, so it helps to know upfront whether you’re one of them.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients don’t receive an SSA-1099. SSI payments aren’t taxable, and the SSA doesn’t generate a benefit statement for them. If you receive both SSI and Title II benefits (retirement, survivors, or disability), you’ll get an SSA-1099 covering only the Title II portion.4Social Security Administration. Nonresident aliens receive Form SSA-1042S instead of an SSA-1099. It follows the same January mailing timeline and is available online through a my Social Security account starting February 1. The SSA-1042S includes the fields on the SSA-1099 plus additional information on nonresident alien tax withholding.9Social Security Administration. Benefit Statements Involving Alien Withholding Tax

If the Numbers on Your Form Look Wrong

Before calling about a suspected error, compare the Box 5 net benefits figure against your own records of payments received and any amounts you repaid during the year. Many questions resolve once you account for overpayment recoveries or retroactive adjustments.

If the numbers still don’t match, contact the SSA by phone or visit a local field office. Staff can pull your detailed payment history and review individual transactions. When a statement is confirmed to be incorrect, the SSA issues a corrected benefit statement.10Social Security Administration.
