When Does Social Security COLA Take Effect and Get Paid?

The 2026 Social Security cost of living adjustment takes effect with the December 2025 benefit, but because Social Security pays one month behind, the first payment showing the 2.8 percent increase arrives in January 2026. Supplemental Security Income recipients see the raise a day earlier, on December 31, 2025, because January 1 is a federal holiday. The Social Security Administration announced the 2.8 percent figure on October 24, 2025, and it applies to roughly 75 million people.

When the first falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the payment shifts to the last business day before.
