PayPal reports to the credit bureaus on a monthly cycle, but only for certain products. If you have PayPal Credit, Synchrony Bank sends your balance, credit limit, and payment status to Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion within a few days after each billing cycle closes.1PayPal. PayPal Credit: Your Reusable Credit Line Pay in 4 purchases generally stay off your consumer credit report unless you fall behind. Pay Monthly installment loans, business lending, and delinquent accounts each follow their own rules.
PayPal Credit Reports Once Per Billing Cycle
PayPal Credit is a revolving line of credit issued by Synchrony Bank.1PayPal. PayPal Credit: Your Reusable Credit Line Synchrony reports the account to all three major bureaus once a month, shortly after your statement closes. The snapshot captures your balance at statement close, your credit limit, and whether your most recent payment was on time. Charges or payments made after the statement date roll into next month’s report, not the current one.
That timing matters for your credit utilization ratio, which is one of the strongest inputs to your score. Because the reported balance is a single day’s snapshot, paying down the card before the statement closes lowers what the bureaus see. On a $2,000 limit, a $1,800 balance at statement close reports as 90% utilization; paying it to $400 first reports as 20%.
Pay in 4 and Pay Monthly Follow Different Rules
PayPal offers two “Pay Later” products at checkout, and they are treated very differently by the bureaus.
Pay in 4
Pay in 4 splits a purchase into four interest-free payments over six weeks. Applying triggers only a soft credit check, which does not affect your score.2PayPal. Questions About Pay in 4 Applications On-time Pay in 4 payments are generally not reported to the credit bureaus, so normal use will not help or hurt your score. If the account becomes delinquent, PayPal may report the default or send the balance to collections, and that can appear on your report.
Pay Monthly
Pay Monthly is an installment loan for larger purchases. The initial evaluation uses a soft credit check with no score impact.3PayPal. Questions About Pay Monthly Applications Once you accept and use the loan, PayPal may report the loan amount and payment history to the bureaus. On-time payments can help your credit; missed ones will show up too. A Pay Monthly loan that reaches 120 days past due may be charged off and reported as a charge-off, meaning the lender has written the debt off as a loss even though you still owe the balance.4PayPal. Business Products Mostly Stay Off Your Personal Report
PayPal’s business lending products are different. Business credit activity is reported primarily to commercial credit bureaus such as Dun & Bradstreet, Experian Business, and Equifax Business rather than to the consumer bureaus.
PayPal Business Loans run credit checks when you accept an approved offer, and accepting the loan may affect your personal credit score.5PayPal. Small Business Loans – Fast Funding for What’s Next PayPal Working Capital involves no personal credit check at all; approval is based primarily on your PayPal sales history.6PayPal. Working Capital Loan for Businesses Routine on-time payments on either product generally do not appear on your personal credit report. If a Business Loan you personally guaranteed goes into default, the lender may report the delinquency to consumer bureaus under your name.
What Applying for PayPal Credit Does to Your Score
Only one of these products triggers a hard inquiry at application. A soft check has no effect on your score; a hard inquiry can lower it by a few points temporarily.

When Missed Payments Get Reported
Late payments follow a predictable timeline. A creditor can report a missed payment once it is 30 days past due, and the delinquency status is updated again at 60, 90, and 120 days, with each step doing more damage to your score.
For a revolving account like PayPal Credit, Synchrony Bank charges off the balance after 180 days of non-payment, which is standard across the credit card industry.7Synchrony Financial. Quarterly Report 10-Q for Period Ended March 31, 2018 Pay Monthly charge-offs can happen sooner, at 120 days past due.4PayPal. Questions About Pay Monthly Repayments After a charge-off, the debt may be sold to a collection agency, and the collection account can appear as a separate negative entry.
Under federal law, most negative items, including late payments, collections, and charge-offs, can remain on your credit report for up to seven years.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 U.S.C. 1681c – Requirements Relating to Information Contained in Consumer Reports The seven-year clock starts 180 days after the date you first became delinquent on the account that led to the collection or charge-off, not from the date the debt was sold or the charge-off was reported. Bankruptcies can remain for up to ten years.
Checking and Disputing What PayPal Reports
Synchrony Bank and PayPal generally report to all three nationwide bureaus, but they are not legally required to, and some loan types may only appear on one or two reports.9Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. You can get your reports free each week through AnnualCreditReport.com; checking your own report is a soft inquiry and has no score effect.10Federal Trade Commission. Free Credit Reports
