When Does MOHELA Report to Credit Bureaus: Timing and Disputes

MOHELA sends your federal student loan information to the four nationwide credit bureaus — Equifax, Experian, TransUnion, and Innovis — once a month, using your account status as of the last day of that month.1Federal Student Aid. Credit Reporting – MOHELA So the short answer to when does MOHELA report to credit bureaus is: monthly, after month-end, with the data typically visible on your report two to three weeks later. The longer answer depends on what changed: a routine payment, a late payment, a servicer transfer, a payoff, or a forgiveness discharge each follow their own clock.

Why Your Payment Doesn’t Show Up the Next Day

MOHELA captures a single snapshot of your account on the last day of each month and transmits that batch to the bureaus. The file includes your current balance, payment status, and any change in account standing. A payment you make on the 10th is reflected in the snapshot taken on the last day of that same month, not immediately.

Each bureau then needs its own processing time to load the file into your credit record. Figure on roughly two to three weeks after month-end before the new balance or status is visible when you pull your report. Checking the day after a payment posts to MOHELA will usually show the older figure, and that is normal rather than a reporting error.

When a Missed Payment Becomes a Late Payment on Your Credit Report

Missing a due date does not immediately generate a derogatory mark. Your MOHELA account has to be 90 or more days past due as of the last day of the month before the delinquency is transmitted to the credit bureaus.1Federal Student Aid. Credit Reporting – MOHELA If you catch up before the 90-day mark, nothing goes to the bureaus. After that first report, continued delinquency is reported again at 120 days, 150 days, and 180-plus days past due.

The 90-day window gives you time to act. Interest keeps accruing while you are behind, and MOHELA may contact you well before day 90, but your credit score is not affected until that threshold is crossed at a month-end snapshot. Enrolling in an income-driven repayment plan or requesting forbearance through MOHELA before you hit 90 days past due keeps the delinquency off your credit file.

Default Reporting

A federal student loan enters default at 270 days delinquent. Default is reported as a separate negative entry and can stay on your credit report for up to seven years after the loan is paid off or otherwise resolved.2Federal Student Aid. Credit Reporting – CRI

Credit Reporting Gap After a Servicer Transfer

If your loans moved to MOHELA from another servicer such as Nelnet or Aidvantage, expect a short gap in reporting. The old servicer closes its tradeline and reports the account as transferred, which can display as “paid in full” on your credit report even though you still owe the balance.3Federal Student Aid. So Your Loan Was Transferred—Whats Next? That is a standard transfer entry, not forgiveness.

MOHELA then opens a new tradeline. Your full payment history can take up to 30 business days — roughly six weeks — to populate under the new servicer.3Federal Student Aid. So Your Loan Was Transferred—Whats Next? During the gap the report may look thin, with the old account closed and the new one showing little history. Once MOHELA completes a full billing cycle and its first month-end transmission, the new entry fills in with your original loan details and payment record.

How Long Until a Payoff Shows on Your Credit Report

After you make a final payment or pay a loan off early, MOHELA has to verify the zero balance and close the account before reporting the change. That internal step generally takes 30 to 60 days from the date the final payment is processed. The paid-in-full status then goes out in the next month-end transmission to the bureaus, so you may wait a full billing cycle beyond the payoff date before your report reflects it.

PSLF Discharge Timing

Forgiveness takes longer. After you submit your Public Service Loan Forgiveness request and reach 120 qualifying payments, the Department of Education’s final review of your account takes approximately 60 business days.4Federal Student Aid. How to Manage your Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Progress on StudentAid.gov If approved, the Department notifies you first, and MOHELA follows with its own notification once the discharge is processed. The zero balance is then included in the next monthly transmission to the credit bureaus. Plan on roughly three to four months between submitting your forgiveness request and seeing a zero balance on your credit report.

How Deferment, Forbearance, and SAVE Are Reported

Deferred and forbearance accounts are still reported every month, but they are coded as such rather than as delinquent. A deferred loan carries a payment frequency of “deferred,” and a loan in forbearance carries a special comment flag.2Federal Student Aid. Credit Reporting – CRI Payment history stays marked as current for the entire time the status is in effect. In-school and grace-period loans are also reported as current each month.

The administrative forbearance that applies to borrowers enrolled in or applying for the SAVE repayment plan is reported the same way: as a current account, not a delinquent one. Interest has been accruing on SAVE forbearance loans since August 1, 2025, and that time does not count toward PSLF or income-driven repayment forgiveness, but neither fact changes how the account is coded on your credit report.5Federal Student Aid. What to Do If MOHELA Reported Something Wrong

If your report shows the wrong balance, a delinquency during a period you were actually in deferment or forbearance, or a status that does not match your account, you have two parallel ways to dispute it.

Dispute With MOHELA

Log in at mohela.studentaid.gov, select “Upload” from the menu, and choose “Miscellaneous” as the document type to submit your dispute and supporting documents. You can also mail documents to MOHELA at 633 Spirit Drive, Chesterfield, MO 63005-1243. Documentation matters most when the error relates to a protected status. MOHELA is not authorized to make “goodwill” adjustments; it can only correct what was reported inaccurately.1Federal Student Aid. Credit Reporting – MOHELA

Dispute With the Credit Bureau

File directly with the bureau showing the error — Equifax, Experian, TransUnion, or Innovis. Federal law requires the bureau to investigate and either correct or delete the item within 30 days of receiving your notice.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 U.S. Code 1681i – Procedure in Case of Disputed Accuracy The bureau will verify with MOHELA, and the corrected information will post after the investigation closes. Filing with MOHELA and the bureau at the same time runs the two tracks in parallel and can shorten the overall wait.
