The IRS opens e-file for individual tax returns on January 26, 2026, at 9 a.m. Eastern time. Business returns start earlier, on January 13, 2026. The system then runs through the April 15 filing deadline and stays open for extension filers until October 15, before a brief shutdown in late December for annual maintenance.1Internal Revenue Service. Why the Date Moves Year to Year
The IRS sets the opening date based on how much work its Modernized e-File system needs to accommodate new tax law. When Congress passes legislation late in the year, the agency sometimes pushes the start date back so it can update processing software. In recent years the individual window has landed in the last week of January, and 2026 fits that pattern.
No return enters the IRS processing pipeline before the official start date, regardless of what your software tells you.
Filing Before the System Opens
Tax preparation software will let you complete and submit your return weeks before January 26. Those returns sit in a holding queue and get transmitted once the IRS begins accepting submissions. Filing the day the system opens gives you one of the earliest possible refund dates. Most e-filed returns are processed within about three weeks of acceptance, and refunds follow on that same timeline.2Internal Revenue Service. Refunds
The Exception for EITC and ACTC Filers
If you claim the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit, filing on opening day will not get you an early refund. The Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act requires the IRS to hold your entire refund longer than other filers so the agency can verify these credits. For the 2026 season, the IRS has said projected deposit dates for most early EITC and ACTC filers will be available through the “Where’s My Refund?” tool by February 21, 2026.3Internal Revenue Service. What You Need Ready by January 26
If the plan is to file the moment e-file opens, gather these items ahead of time. Employers must send W-2s by January 31, so if you have not received yours, check with payroll.4Internal Revenue Service. General Instructions for Forms W-2 and W-3 You will also need any 1099 forms that apply, such as a 1099-INT for bank interest5Internal Revenue Service. A few items specific to e-filing cause most of the same-day rejections:
- Your prior-year adjusted gross income. The IRS uses it to verify your identity when you e-file, and a wrong figure is one of the most common reasons for rejection. It is on line 11 of last year’s Form 1040, or you can pull a free transcript from the IRS website.7Internal Revenue Service. Definition of Adjusted Gross Income
- Valid Social Security numbers or ITINs for you, your spouse if filing jointly, and every dependent. A single transposed digit triggers an immediate rejection.
- Your Identity Protection PIN, if the IRS has issued one. Without the six-digit number, the return will not be accepted.8Internal Revenue Service. Get an Identity Protection PIN
- Routing and account numbers for direct deposit. The IRS limits direct deposit to three refunds per account, so shared family accounts need planning.9Internal Revenue Service. The Benefits of Having a Tax Refund Direct Deposited
If Your Return Gets Rejected
E-file rejections happen more often than people expect and are not a serious problem if you respond quickly. You get an error code explaining what went wrong and can fix and resubmit without penalty. For Form 1040, the IRS gives you five calendar days after the filing deadline to correct and retransmit a rejected return. This is called the perfection period, and it applies to rejected extensions too.10Internal Revenue Service. 3.42.5 IRS e-File of Individual Income Tax Returns If you cannot resolve the electronic issue, a paper return mailed within ten calendar days of the rejection notice is still considered timely.
How Long E-file Stays Open
The system runs well past April 15. If you file Form 4868 for an automatic six-month extension, you can continue to e-file through October 15.11Internal Revenue Service. Get an Extension to File Your Tax Return An extension buys time to file, not time to pay. Any unpaid balance after April 15 starts accruing penalties and interest.12Internal Revenue Service. E-file is not limited to the current year. The MeF system accepts the current tax year and two prior years, so during the 2026 season you can e-file returns for 2025, 2024, and 2023. Anything older must be filed on paper.13Internal Revenue Service. Benefits of Modernized e-File (MeF)
The IRS shuts down MeF each December for annual maintenance. The individual return system shut down on December 26, 2025, and business returns reopened on January 13, 2026. Once the shutdown starts, you can no longer e-file returns for the prior cycle and must switch to paper.
