Welfare checks come out on different days depending on which program pays you. Social Security and SSDI arrive on one of three Wednesdays each month based on your birth date, SSI lands on the 1st, and SNAP and TANF deposits follow a schedule your state sets, often tied to your case number or last name.
Social Security and SSDI
If you started receiving Social Security retirement or SSDI benefits after May 1997, the Social Security Administration pays you on the Wednesday that matches your birthday:1Social Security Administration. Paying Monthly Benefits
- Born 1st–10th: second Wednesday of the month.
- Born 11th–20th: third Wednesday of the month.
- Born 21st–31st: fourth Wednesday of the month.
Everyone drawing on the same Social Security record shares the same payment day, set by the primary beneficiary’s birthday. SSI

SNAP and TANF
SNAP and TANF are run by the states, and each state sets its own deposit calendar. Your local SNAP office assigns a specific day when benefits post to your EBT card.4Food and Nutrition Service. Facts About SNAP The assigned day usually depends on something like the last digit of your case number or the first letter of your last name, and deposits are staggered across the month to keep retailer and state systems from getting overloaded on a single day.
TANF cash assistance works the same way. Each state picks its own schedule, benefit amounts, and eligibility rules, so there is no single national payment date. Your caseworker or state agency website will list the deposit dates that apply to you.
Weekend and Holiday Shifts
When your scheduled payment day falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday, the deposit moves to the last business day before that date.3Social Security Administration. A recent change to your bank account or mailing address can also delay a deposit by a day or two while the update finishes processing. Report changes promptly, but expect a short lag around the transition.
How to Find Your Exact Payment Date
For Social Security and SSDI, sign in to your “my Social Security” account at ssa.gov. Once you’re in, you can see both upcoming and past payment dates.5Social Security Administration. For SNAP and TANF, look up your state’s Department of Human Services or Social Services website. Most states publish an EBT deposit calendar, and many offer a balance portal or mobile app that shows when your latest deposit posted. Your initial approval letter should also list your assigned deposit date. If you can’t find it, call the number printed on the back of your EBT card.
Paper Checks Have Ended
As of September 30, 2025, the federal government has largely stopped issuing paper checks for benefit payments. A White House order directed the Treasury Department to move all federal disbursements, including Social Security, SSDI, SSI, and veterans’ benefits, to electronic delivery.7Social Security Administration. - Direct deposit into a checking or savings account at a bank or credit union.
- A Direct Express prepaid Mastercard, for recipients without a bank account. There is no signup fee, no monthly fee, and one free ATM withdrawal per deposit each month.8Bureau of the Fiscal Service. Direct Express
To enroll in Direct Express, call 1-800-333-1795 or visit usdirectexpress.com. If electronic payment isn’t feasible for you, you can request an exemption waiver from the U.S. Treasury at 1-877-874-6347.7Social Security Administration. If Your Payment Doesn’t Arrive
Start with your bank or credit union. Processing delays on the bank’s end are more common than actual SSA errors. If the bank confirms nothing is pending, call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 with your Social Security number and payment details ready.6Social Security Administration. Contact Social Security By Phone If the SSA says the payment was issued but never reached you, they can trace it and, when needed, reissue it.
For a missing SNAP or TANF deposit, call the number on the back of your EBT card or your local benefits office. Check your state’s deposit calendar first. Recipients often assume their payment date is earlier than it actually is, especially after a state schedule change.
Document every call: the date, who you spoke with, and what they told you. Those notes matter if you need to escalate.
