When Do Veterans Get Paid? VA Payment Dates, Early Months, and Delays

VA disability compensation, pension, and Dependency and Indemnity Compensation payments arrive on the first business day of each month and cover the previous month’s benefits. When the first of the month falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday, the VA shifts your deposit to the last business day before that date, so a payment you expect on the first sometimes shows up a day or two early. These VA payment dates are set by federal law and apply the same way whether your rating is 10% or 100%.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 38 USC 5120 – Payment of Benefits; Delivery

2026 VA Deposit Dates Month by Month

Each date below is when the benefits for the month just ended are deposited. Five months in 2026 pay early because the first of the following month lands on a weekend.

  • January 2026 benefits: Friday, January 30, 2026 (February 1 is a Sunday)
  • February 2026 benefits: Friday, February 27, 2026 (March 1 is a Sunday)
  • March 2026 benefits: Wednesday, April 1, 2026
  • April 2026 benefits: Friday, May 1, 2026
  • May 2026 benefits: Monday, June 1, 2026
  • June 2026 benefits: Wednesday, July 1, 2026
  • July 2026 benefits: Friday, July 31, 2026 (August 1 is a Saturday)
  • August 2026 benefits: Tuesday, September 1, 2026
  • September 2026 benefits: Thursday, October 1, 2026
  • October 2026 benefits: Friday, October 30, 2026 (November 1 is a Sunday)
  • November 2026 benefits: Tuesday, December 1, 2026
  • December 2026 benefits: Thursday, December 31, 2026 (January 1, 2027 is New Year’s Day)

The same rules govern DIC for surviving spouses and dependents and the VA pension program. Payments come in arrears, meaning the deposit you see in early April is for March, not April.

Why Some Months Pay Early

Federal law requires the VA to deliver a payment before a weekend or holiday, never after.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 38 USC 5120 – Payment of Benefits; Delivery If the first of the month is a Sunday, the deposit lands the preceding Friday. If it is a Saturday, the deposit lands the preceding Friday as well. If the first is a weekday federal holiday, such as New Year’s Day 2027 falling on a Thursday, funds arrive the Wednesday before.

An early deposit is your regular monthly benefit, not a bonus. The gap until the next payment stretches a little longer to make up for it. When July 2026 benefits arrive on July 31 rather than August 1, for example, the wait until the next deposit on September 1 runs 32 days instead of the usual 31. If your budget is tight around the first of the month, mark the early-payment months in advance so the longer stretch does not catch you off guard.

Your First Payment After a New Rating

If the VA has just granted you a rating of at least 10%, expect your first payment within 15 days of the decision.2Veterans Affairs. What to Expect After You Get a Disability Rating That first deposit is usually a lump sum covering every month owed from your effective date through the current period, commonly called back pay. Once that payment clears, you move onto the monthly cycle shown above.

The size of back pay depends on how far your effective date reaches. For most claims, the effective date is the later of the date the VA received your claim or the date your disability began.3Veterans Affairs. Disability Compensation Effective Dates If the VA later raises your rating, retroactive pay covers the stretch between the effective date of the increase and the date the higher rate starts arriving.

If 15 days pass after your decision notice and no payment has arrived, call the VA benefits hotline at 800-827-1000.4Veterans Affairs. Helpful VA Phone Numbers

How Your Bank Changes When Funds Appear

Federal benefit payments are delivered by electronic funds transfer in almost every case.5eCFR. 31 CFR Part 208 – Management of Federal Agency Disbursements Even after the VA certifies your deposit on schedule, the exact moment it is available depends on the bank. Some institutions post ACH transfers a day early. Others, often smaller credit unions and regional banks, may need an extra business day to clear the transaction.

Veterans without a traditional bank account can use the Direct Express prepaid debit card. Issued by the U.S. Treasury, it loads your federal benefit on the scheduled payment date with no monthly fee, no overdraft fee, and no signup cost, and gives you one free in-network ATM withdrawal per deposit each month.6Bureau of the Fiscal Service. Direct Express Paper checks are available in limited situations but often show up several days after the official payment date.

What to Do If Your VA Payment Is Late

If the first business week of the month has passed with no deposit, check with your bank first to rule out a processing delay on their side. If nothing is pending, call the VA:

  • Disability, pension, or DIC payments: VA benefits hotline at 800-827-1000, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. ET.
  • GI Bill or other education payments: GI Bill hotline at 888-442-4551, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. ET.

Common causes of a missed or delayed deposit include a recent change to your bank account information that has not fully processed, a pending enrollment verification for education benefits, or a VA debt offset reducing or withholding the payment. Have your VA file number or Social Security number ready so the representative can pull up your account without delay.4Veterans Affairs. Helpful VA Phone Numbers

Education and Military Retirement Payments Follow Their Own Schedules

Two other common veteran payments do not follow the disability calendar. GI Bill and Chapter 35 education benefits depend on monthly enrollment verification and the academic term, and the Monthly Housing Allowance is prorated for partial months and paused during breaks between semesters.7Veterans Affairs. Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) Military retirement pay is issued by the Defense Finance and Accounting Service, not the VA. In 2026, DFAS retired pay dates generally line up with VA payment dates on the first business day of the following month, though Survivor Benefit Plan annuitant payments run on a separate calendar and may land a few days later.8Defense Finance and Accounting Service. Pay Schedule Veterans getting concurrent retirement and disability pay or combat-related special compensation usually see both deposits the same day, but a weekend or holiday shift can split them by a day.
