Social Security retirement, disability, and survivors benefits come out on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of the month, and which Wednesday you get depends on a birth date. If you receive Supplemental Security Income, your payment comes on the 1st. If you started collecting Social Security before May 1997, yours comes on the 3rd. So when do Social Security checks come out for you? Match your situation to one of those three tracks and you have your answer for every month of the year.
The Birth-Date Rule for Wednesday Payments

- Birth date on the 1st through 10th: second Wednesday of the month.
- Birth date on the 11th through 20th: third Wednesday.
- Birth date on the 21st through 31st: fourth Wednesday.
One important wrinkle: the birthday that matters is the worker’s, not necessarily yours. If you collect a spousal benefit, your payment day follows your spouse’s birth date. SSI Recipients: The 1st of the Month
Supplemental Security Income is a separate program from Social Security retirement or disability, and it pays on the 1st of every month. If You Started Benefits Before May 1997
Anyone who began collecting Social Security before May 1997 is paid on the 3rd of the month, regardless of birth date. What Happens When the Date Falls on a Weekend or Holiday
Federal law requires the SSA to move payments earlier when the scheduled date lands on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday. In that case, the deposit goes out on the last business day before the scheduled date.5Social Security Administration. Social Security Act 708 – Delivery of Benefit Checks If the 1st of the month is a Saturday, SSI recipients are paid on the preceding Friday. The same rule applies to the 3rd-of-the-month payment for pre-1997 beneficiaries.
Wednesday payments can shift too. November 11, 2026 is Veterans Day, and it also happens to be the second Wednesday of the month. If Your Payment Doesn’t Arrive
Check with your bank first. Electronic deposits sometimes take a few extra hours to post, and the payment may show up as pending before it clears. After that, call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. You can also visit a local SSA field office. Have your Social Security number ready. One frequent cause of a missing deposit is a recent change to your bank account. If you switched accounts close to your payment date, the money may have gone to the old account or been returned. Update your banking details at least three to five business days before your next payment, and keep the old account open until the first deposit posts to the new one.
