If your SSDI is normally paid on the 3rd of the month and the 3rd falls on a weekend, the Social Security Administration deposits your benefit on the Friday before instead. The same rule applies when the 3rd lands on a federal holiday: the payment moves back to the last business day before it.1Social Security Administration. Social Security Handbook – 121 Payment Dates In 2026, this happens three times.
The 2026 Dates That Shift
Three months in 2026 have the 3rd on a weekend, so your deposit arrives on the preceding Friday:
- January 2026: The 3rd is a Saturday. Payment arrives Friday, January 2.
- May 2026: The 3rd is a Sunday. Payment arrives Friday, May 1.
- October 2026: The 3rd is a Saturday. Payment arrives Friday, October 2.
Every other month in 2026, the 3rd is a weekday, and your deposit lands on that date as usual. The SSA publishes the full year’s calendar showing each shift.2Social Security Administration. Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments – 2026-2027
The Rule Behind the Early Payment
The SSA’s policy is spelled out plainly: when the 3rd falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday, benefits are dated and delivered on the first preceding day that is not a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday.1Social Security Administration. Social Security Handbook – 121 Payment Dates In practice that almost always means Friday. The rare exception is a Friday that is itself a federal holiday, which would push the payment back one more day to Thursday.
Who Is Actually on the 3rd-of-the-Month Schedule
Most SSDI recipients are not paid on the 3rd. If you filed on or after May 1, 1997, and you don’t also receive SSI, you’re on the Wednesday cycle instead, with your specific Wednesday determined by the birthday tied to the Social Security number on the record.3Social Security Administration. Paying Monthly Benefits The 3rd-of-the-month date applies to two groups:
- People who started receiving Social Security benefits before May 1997 and have stayed on the original schedule.
- People who receive both SSDI and Supplemental Security Income. SSDI pays on the 3rd; SSI pays on the 1st.
A small number of other beneficiaries are kept on the 3rd based on individual circumstances. Your my Social Security account online shows the specific date assigned to you if you’re not sure.
When the Money Is Actually Available
The SSA releases your payment on the scheduled date, but the bank decides when you can spend it. Under federal banking rules, an electronic deposit like a Social Security payment has to be available for withdrawal no later than the business day after the bank receives it.4Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. A Guide to Regulation CC Compliance Most banks post government direct deposits the morning of the payment date, and some large banks offer early access that makes the funds visible a day or two ahead.
Starting September 18, 2026, a new NACHA rule will require standard ACH credits to be available by 9 a.m. local time on the settlement date, regardless of when the bank receives the file.5Nacha. New Nacha Rules to Accelerate Funds Availability and Enhance IATs For anyone whose bank has posted deposits slowly in the past, the shifted Friday deposit should be usable earlier in the day going forward.
The January 2026 Double Deposit
If you receive both SSDI and SSI, the start of 2026 will look unusual. SSI is paid on the 1st of the month, and it follows the same weekend-and-holiday rule as SSDI.1Social Security Administration. Social Security Handbook – 121 Payment Dates January 1, 2026 is New Year’s Day, so SSI for January is paid on Wednesday, December 31, 2025. SSDI for January then arrives on Friday, January 2. Two deposits inside three days, and then nothing until the next month’s cycle.
May 2026 produces a smaller version of the same pattern. SSI arrives Friday, May 1 (the 1st is a weekday, so no shift), and SSDI shifts from Sunday the 3rd back to that same Friday. Both benefits land on May 1.
If Your Friday Payment Doesn’t Arrive
Check with your bank first. Posting delays happen and usually clear within a day. If the deposit still hasn’t shown up after a reasonable wait, contact the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or your local Social Security office. The SSA will investigate and replace the payment if it was due.6Social Security Administration. How Do I Report a Missing Payment For anyone still receiving mailed payments through older arrangements, the SSA asks you to wait three additional mailing days past the scheduled date before reporting the payment missing.2Social Security Administration. Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments – 2026-2027
One thing worth keeping in mind for budgeting: an early payment isn’t an extra payment. The Friday deposit is the same monthly benefit paid a day or two sooner, and the next payment will still be roughly a month after that, not a month after the original 3rd.
