Most ACH payments settle within one business day, and about 80 percent of total ACH volume clears in a banking day or less. The exact ACH payment processing time depends on three things: whether the transfer is a credit or a debit, which Same-Day ACH window your bank catches, and the bank’s own internal cut-off. Every network deadline runs on Eastern Time, so your time zone matters too.
Credits Settle in Up to Two Days, Debits in One
The direction of the transfer sets the maximum settlement window under NACHA rules.
An ACH credit is money being pushed to someone else’s account. Payroll direct deposit is the classic example. Credits can settle the same day, the next banking day, or up to two banking days after initiation. Most settle within one day.1Nacha. The Significant Majority of ACH Payments Settle in One Business Day or Less
An ACH debit is money being pulled from an account, like a utility autopay or a mortgage withdrawal. Debits must settle within one banking day of initiation and cannot be dated more than one day into the future.2Federal Reserve Financial Services. Same Day ACH Frequently Asked Questions
So debits actually run on a tighter clock than credits, which is the opposite of what most people guess.
Same-Day ACH Processing Windows
Same-Day ACH is the fastest option on the network, handling both credits and debits and settling in hours instead of overnight. Each banking day has three windows, all on Eastern Time:3Federal Reserve Financial Services. FedACH Processing Schedule
- Window 1: file submitted by 10:30 a.m. ET, settles at 1:00 p.m. ET
- Window 2: file submitted by 2:45 p.m. ET, settles at 5:00 p.m. ET
- Window 3: file submitted by 4:45 p.m. ET, settles at 6:00 p.m. ET

Your Bank’s Cut-Off Is Earlier Than the Network’s
The FedACH deadlines above apply to the file your bank sends to the operator, not to the moment you click “submit.” Every bank sets its own internal cut-off, usually earlier, to leave time for bundling and transmitting. Submit a transfer one minute after that cut-off and your bank treats it as if you submitted it the next business day. One minute, one extra day of settlement.
Internal cut-offs vary widely and often fall between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. local time, depending on the institution. Look for the specific deadline in the transfers section of online banking or in your account agreement.
Eastern Time applies to every network deadline. On the West Coast, the last Same-Day ACH window closes at 4:45 p.m. ET, which is 1:45 p.m. Pacific. Assuming your local clock applies is one of the most common causes of an unexpected one-day delay.
Third-party services add another layer. A payroll provider, bill-pay platform, or accounting system has to assemble its own file before handing it to your bank, so it imposes its own earlier cut-off. If the provider’s deadline for same-day processing is noon and your bank’s is 2:00 p.m., noon is the one that counts for you. For anything time-sensitive, confirm both deadlines.
Weekends and Federal Holidays Pause Everything
ACH processes only on banking days. Weekends and Federal Reserve holidays stop settlement entirely. A transfer initiated Friday evening won’t start processing until Monday, which pushes a next-day credit to Monday settlement and a two-day credit to Tuesday.
The Federal Reserve observes eleven holidays each year:6Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. Federal Reserve Bank Holiday Schedule
- New Year’s Day
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day
- Washington’s Birthday (Presidents Day)
- Memorial Day
- Juneteenth National Independence Day
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Columbus Day
- Veterans Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day
When a holiday lands on Saturday, Federal Reserve banks close the Friday before. When one lands on Sunday, they close the following Monday. A payment initiated right before a long holiday weekend may not begin processing for three or four calendar days.
Settlement Is Not the Same as Available Funds
Settlement means your bank has received the money from the ACH operator. Availability is when you can actually spend it. NACHA rules set when the receiving bank has to let you have it.
For Same-Day ACH credits, your bank must make the funds available by 5:00 p.m. local time on the settlement date.5Nacha. Same Day ACH – Moving Payments Faster Phase 1
For non-Same-Day credits, a new rule tightens that deadline. Starting September 18, 2026, banks must make the funds available by 9:00 a.m. local time on the settlement date.7Nacha. Funds Availability Requirements for Non-Same Day Credit Entries Before that date, some banks hold the money until later in the settlement day. After, a payroll that settles Friday should be spendable by 9:00 a.m. in your bank’s local time zone.
When a Payment Fails or Needs to Be Reversed
Not every ACH clears. The receiving bank sends failed payments back through the network with a standardized return code. Common ones include insufficient funds (R01), account closed (R02), no account found (R03), payment stopped (R08), and authorization revoked (R07).
Return timing depends on the reason. Standard returns, like insufficient funds or a closed account, must go back within two banking days of the settlement date. Unauthorized debits on a consumer account get a longer return window of 60 calendar days from settlement. Business accounts stay at the two-banking-day limit even for unauthorized entries.
A sender who makes a mistake, like a duplicate entry, the wrong recipient, or the wrong amount, can initiate a reversal, but it has to reach the receiving bank within five banking days of the original settlement date.8Nacha. ACH Network Rules – Reversals and Enforcement A company cannot reverse an ACH payment because it changed its mind or ran short of funds.
If an ACH Debit Hits Your Account Without Permission
Regulation E, which implements the Electronic Fund Transfer Act, lets you dispute an unauthorized ACH transaction by notifying your bank within 60 days of the statement showing the charge.9Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 1005.11 Procedures for Resolving Errors
The bank then has 10 business days to investigate and resolve the dispute. It can extend the review to 45 days, but only if it provisionally credits your account during the extension.10eCFR. 12 CFR 205.11 Procedures for Resolving Errors New accounts, within 30 days of the first deposit, get 20 business days for the initial review and up to 90 days total.
Your liability depends on how fast you report:11eCFR. 12 CFR Part 205 – Electronic Fund Transfers Regulation E
- Within 2 business days of learning of the loss: capped at $50.
- After 2 business days but within 60 days of your statement: up to $500.
- After 60 days: potentially the full amount of unauthorized transfers that happen after the 60-day window.
You can also stop a scheduled ACH debit, even one you previously authorized, by notifying your bank at least three business days before the payment date. The notice can be oral or written, though the bank can ask you to confirm an oral request in writing within 14 days.
When ACH Isn’t Fast Enough
If the timing above doesn’t work, a domestic wire is the main alternative. Wires settle in real time during the Fedwire operating window, which runs from 9:00 p.m. ET the prior evening through 7:00 p.m. ET.12Federal Reserve Financial Services. Fedwire Funds Service and National Settlement Service Operating Hours They typically cost $10 to $50, while ACH usually costs under $1 and is often free for consumers.
Wires are also essentially irrevocable once sent, where ACH can be returned or reversed in the circumstances described above. Same-Day ACH caps individual payments at $1 million; wires have no standard cap, though your bank may set one. For payroll, rent, and recurring bills, ACH is cheap and fast enough. Wires fit when you need guaranteed same-day delivery, you’re sending more than the Same-Day ACH cap, or the recipient needs irrevocable funds, as in a real estate closing.
