When Are T5 Tax Slips Due? Filing Deadline, Penalties, and Fixes

T5 slips for the 2025 tax year must be filed with the Canada Revenue Agency and delivered to recipients by Monday, March 2, 2026. Who Has to Send a T5

Any corporation, partnership, trust, or individual who pays investment income to a Canadian resident, or to a nominee or agent acting for one, has to prepare a T5 return.3Canada Revenue Agency. T5 Guide – Return of Investment Income The threshold is low: once total payments to a single recipient reach $50 in the year, a slip is required.4Canada Revenue Agency. The income reported on a T5 covers dividends (eligible and non-eligible), interest from bonds, deposits, insurance and annuity contracts, royalties, blended payments of income and capital, and interest deemed to accrue on assigned or transferred equity-linked notes.3Canada Revenue Agency. How to File Before March 2, 2026

Electronic filing is mandatory once you file more than five slips for the year.6Canada Revenue Agency. T5 Information Return – Filing Methods Two channels are available through the CRA:

  • Web Forms, which accepts up to 100 slips entered through the secure portal and suits small to mid-size filers.7Canada Revenue Agency. File Information Returns Electronically – How to File
  • Internet File Transfer, which accepts XML files generated by accounting software through My Business Account and handles large volumes.

Both methods give you a confirmation number immediately. Keep it. That number is your proof the return arrived on time.

Paper filing is only permitted when you have five or fewer slips.6Canada Revenue Agency. Filing on paper when you should have filed electronically is its own violation, with penalties starting at $125 for six to fifty slips and reaching $2,500 for 2,501 or more.9Canada Revenue Agency. Penalties

Penalties for Filing T5 Slips Late

The CRA charges late-filing penalties on a per-day basis, capped at 100 days, with the daily amount and maximum determined by how many slips are late.10Canada Revenue Agency. When to File Information Returns The tiers are:

  • 1 to 5 slips: $100 flat.
  • 6 to 10 slips: $5 per day, to a maximum of $500.
  • 11 to 50 slips: $10 per day, to a maximum of $1,000.
  • 51 to 500 slips: $15 per day, to a maximum of $1,500.
  • 501 to 2,500 slips: $25 per day, to a maximum of $2,500.
  • 2,501 to 10,000 slips: $50 per day, to a maximum of $5,000.
  • 10,001 or more slips: $75 per day, to a maximum of $7,500.

Two additional charges can stack on top. Interest accrues on unpaid amounts at the CRA’s prescribed rate, set at 7% for the first quarter of 2026.12Canada Revenue Agency. Fixing a Slip After You’ve Filed

If you catch an error after submitting, prepare an amended slip that corrects only the wrong information and leaves everything else identical to the original. Give the recipient two copies of the corrected slip.13Canada Revenue Agency. Amending, Cancelling, Adding, or Replacing T5 Slips

Filing electronically, use report type code “A” on both the summary and the slip for an amendment, and code “C” on the slip (with the original data unchanged) for a cancellation. On paper, write “AMENDED” or “CANCELLED” at the top of the slip, complete every box including the ones that didn’t change, and mail one copy to your tax centre with a covering letter. If You’re the Recipient and Yours Hasn’t Arrived

The same deadline that binds issuers is the reason most T5 slips reach recipients by early March. If yours hasn’t arrived and your personal return is coming due, you still have to report the income. Add up your account statements to estimate the amounts, and attach a note to your return with the issuer’s name and address, the type of income, and what you did to try to get the slip.14Canada Revenue Agency. Contact the issuer first. If that doesn’t produce a slip, check My Account on the CRA website, where your T5 may appear once the issuer has filed it electronically. The CRA cannot give you a copy until after the issuer files.14Canada Revenue Agency. Tax Slips – Get a Copy of Your Slips
