When Are Social Security Direct Deposits Made: Wednesdays and the 1st

Social Security direct deposits are made on one of four days each month. If you filed for retirement, survivors, or disability benefits after May 1997, your payment arrives on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday, depending on the day of the month you were born. Supplemental Security Income is paid on the 1st. People who filed before May 1997, who live outside the United States, or who receive both Social Security and SSI are paid on the 3rd.

The Wednesday Schedule Tied to Your Birth Date

The Social Security Administration spreads benefit payments across three Wednesdays each month to avoid moving every retiree’s deposit on the same day. Your Wednesday is fixed by the numerical day of your birthday. The month and year don’t matter.1Social Security Administration. Cyclical Payment of Social Security Benefits

  • Born on the 1st through the 10th: second Wednesday of the month.
  • Born on the 11th through the 20th: third Wednesday.
  • Born on the 21st through the 31st: fourth Wednesday.

Everyone drawing on the same worker’s earnings record is paid on the same Wednesday, so a retired worker and their spouse receive deposits together.2Social Security Administration. 20 CFR 404.1807 – Monthly Payment Day Once assigned, your payment day stays put unless you begin receiving a concurrent SSI payment or one of the fixed-date exceptions below applies to you.

Fixed-Date Payments on the 1st and the 3rd

Several groups are outside the Wednesday rotation and receive deposits on set calendar dates near the start of the month.

SSI is paid on the 1st of every month. It is a separate program from Social Security retirement and disability insurance, funded by general tax revenue rather than payroll taxes, and it follows its own schedule regardless of your birthday.3Social Security Administration. Social Security Handbook – Payment Dates

If you receive both Social Security and SSI, your Social Security payment shifts to the 3rd of the month while your SSI stays on the 1st. Two deposits arrive in the first few days of each month rather than one on a Wednesday.4Social Security Administration. Paying Monthly Benefits

People who filed for Social Security before May 1997 were never moved onto the Wednesday system. Their payments continue arriving on the 3rd. The same 3rd-of-the-month rule applies if you live in a foreign country, regardless of when you filed.1Social Security Administration. Cyclical Payment of Social Security Benefits

Weekends and Federal Holidays

When a scheduled payment date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday, the deposit moves to the last business day before that date. If the 1st is a Sunday, SSI recipients are paid on the preceding Friday. The same rule applies to 3rd-of-the-month payments and to any Wednesday that coincides with a federal holiday.3Social Security Administration. Social Security Handbook – Payment Dates

Payments always shift earlier, never later. If your scheduled date is a Monday holiday, expect the deposit on the Friday before.

Double SSI Months in 2026

The early-arrival rule means SSI recipients see three calendar months in 2026 with two deposits: the regular 1st-of-the-month payment plus an early payment for the following month pushed back into the current month.5Social Security Administration. Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments 2026

  • January 2026: February 1 is a Sunday, so the February SSI payment arrives Friday, January 30. The regular January payment came on January 1.
  • July 2026: August 1 is a Saturday, so the August SSI payment arrives Friday, July 31. The regular July payment came on July 1.
  • October 2026: November 1 is a Sunday, so the November SSI payment arrives Friday, October 30. The regular October payment came on October 1.

A double-payment month is not extra money. The following month will have no SSI deposit, so both payments have to cover two months of expenses.

Why Your Bank May Show the Money Early

The SSA sends payment files to financial institutions before the official payment date. Some banks and credit unions release those funds a day or two early, which is why a Wednesday deposit sometimes appears on Monday or Tuesday. That is a courtesy from the bank, not a change to the government’s schedule, and whether you get it depends on the institution and account type.

The SSA says funds are available “as soon as business opens” on your scheduled payment day.6Social Security Administration. Direct Deposit If your bank does not offer early access, that is the baseline. Your payment will not arrive later than the scheduled date unless something has gone wrong.

Paper Checks Have Been Phased Out

Federal law now requires Social Security and SSI payments to be made electronically. The government stopped issuing paper checks for most benefit payments after September 30, 2025.7Go Direct. Go Direct – Home Anyone still receiving paper checks at that point may have seen delays. Beneficiaries who cannot use electronic payments can request a waiver from the U.S. Treasury by calling 1-877-874-6347, though waivers are granted only in limited cases.8Social Security Administration. If a Payment Is Missing

Contact your bank or credit union first. The SSA sends funds on schedule, but individual institutions occasionally delay posting. If the bank confirms the deposit has not arrived, wait three additional business days before calling Social Security.5Social Security Administration. After that, call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) to report the missing payment. If you suspect the payment was stolen or your bank account was compromised, call immediately without waiting the three days.9Social Security Administration. How Do I Report a Missing Payment
