When Are Social Security Checks Sent Out Each Month?

Social Security checks are sent out each month on a set schedule tied to your birth date and benefit type. Most retirement, disability, spousal, and survivor beneficiaries are paid on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of the month. Supplemental Security Income arrives on the first, and a smaller group of Social Security recipients is paid on the third regardless of birthday.

The Wednesday Schedule by Birth Date

Since 1997, the Social Security Administration has spread payments across three Wednesdays each month based on the birth date of the worker whose earnings record supports the benefit. • Born on the 1st through the 10th: second Wednesday of the month.
• Born on the 11th through the 20th: third Wednesday.
• Born on the 21st through the 31st: fourth Wednesday.

A separate group receives Social Security on the third of every month regardless of birth date: people who first became entitled to benefits before May 1997, anyone who receives both Social Security and SSI, and beneficiaries living outside the United States.³Social Security Administration. When Weekends and Holidays Shift the Date

Federal law requires the SSA to move any payment that falls on a weekend or federal holiday to the preceding business day.⁴Social Security Administration. 42 USC 909 – Delivery of Benefit Checks How that plays out depends on your schedule.

For payments dated the 1st or 3rd, a Saturday or Sunday date moves back to the preceding Friday. If that Friday is also a federal holiday, payment moves to Thursday.⁵Social Security Administration. These shifts occasionally produce two deposits in one calendar month and none the next. The annual total is unchanged.

If Your Payment Doesn’t Arrive

Start with your bank or credit union. Deposits sometimes show as pending for a short period before funds are released, and a quick call often resolves it.
