When Are Social Security Checks Deposited Each Month?

Social Security retirement and disability payments are deposited each month on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday, based on the birth date of the worker whose earnings record the benefit comes from. Supplemental Security Income is deposited on the first of the month. A smaller group of beneficiaries, mostly people who filed before May 1997, are paid on the third instead. That is the whole schedule, and once you know which slot you fall into, it rarely changes.

The Wednesday Schedule by Birth Date

If you filed for Social Security retirement or disability on or after May 1, 1997, your monthly deposit lands on one of three Wednesdays, keyed to the birth date on the earnings record.1Social Security Administration. Code of Federal Regulations 404-1807

  • Born 1st through 10th: second Wednesday of the month.
  • Born 11th through 20th: third Wednesday of the month.
  • Born 21st through 31st: fourth Wednesday of the month.

Funds should be available as soon as your bank opens that Wednesday.2Social Security Administration. Social Security Direct Deposit Many banks post government ACH deposits shortly after midnight. If yours consistently makes the money available later in the day, that is your bank’s posting timeline, not a delay from Social Security.

When You’re Paid on Someone Else’s Record

If you collect on another person’s work history, your deposit date follows that person’s birthday, not your own. A spouse drawing on a retired worker’s record, a widow or widower receiving survivor benefits, and children receiving dependent benefits are all paid on the Wednesday tied to the worker’s birth date.3Social Security Administration. What You Need to Know When You Get Retirement or Survivors Benefits Everyone paid from the same earnings record receives their deposit on the same day.1Social Security Administration. Code of Federal Regulations 404-1807

So if your late spouse was born on the 15th, your survivor payment arrives on the third Wednesday no matter when your own birthday falls. Check the worker’s birth date first if your deposit date doesn’t seem to match your own.

Who Gets Paid on the Third of the Month

Not every beneficiary is on the Wednesday cycle. Three groups are paid on the third of every month:

If the third falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the deposit moves to the last business day before the third.4Social Security Administration. Social Security Handbook 121 – Payment Dates

Supplemental Security Income: The First of the Month

SSI is a separate, needs-based program for people who are aged, blind, or disabled with very limited income and resources. Your birth date has no effect on when SSI arrives. It comes on the first of every month.5Social Security Administration. 2026 Months With Two SSI Payments (or None)

Because SSI shifts to the prior business day when the first is a weekend or holiday, some calendar months hold two SSI deposits and others hold none. The yearly total is unchanged. In 2026:5Social Security Administration. Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments 2026

  • February 2026, two payments: February 2 (since February 1 is a Sunday) and February 27 (the March payment, since March 1 is also a Sunday).
  • March 2026, no payment: already paid on February 27.
  • October 2026, two payments: October 1, plus October 30 (the November payment, since November 1 is a Sunday).
  • November 2026, no payment: already paid on October 30.
  • December 2026, two payments: December 1, plus December 31 (the January 2027 payment, since January 1 is a holiday).

The no-payment months are where budgets tend to slip. If two deposits land in one month, the second one has to cover the following month’s expenses.

Weekend and Holiday Adjustments

The same rule applies to every Social Security and SSI payment: if the scheduled date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday, the deposit arrives on the last business day before that date.8Social Security Administration. When Will I Get My Benefits if the Payment Date Falls on a Weekend or Holiday A Wednesday holiday pushes a Wednesday-cycle deposit to Tuesday. A Saturday third pushes a third-of-the-month deposit to Friday.4Social Security Administration. Social Security Handbook 121 – Payment Dates

The shift always moves earlier, never later. You will never wait past your scheduled date because of a holiday. The SSA publishes a full calendar each year with the exact date for every month.5Social Security Administration. Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments 2026

If Your Deposit Doesn’t Show Up

Call your bank first. Many perceived delays are the bank’s posting timeline rather than a problem with the payment itself. If the bank confirms it has not received the funds, call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213. When the automated system asks how it can help, say “check delivery” to route to payment-status assistance.9Social Security Administration.
