Federal tax extension deadlines fall on October 15 for individual returns and calendar-year C-corporations, September 15 for partnerships, S-corporations, trusts, and estates, and June 15 (with an option to extend further) for taxpayers living abroad. Filing Form 4868 for individuals or Form 7004 for businesses by the original due date buys the extra time automatically, with no reason required and no IRS approval involved.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6081 – Extension of Time for Filing Returns What the extension does not do is give you more time to pay. That single distinction is where most of the financial damage happens.
Individual Deadline: April 15 to October 15
Individuals get an automatic six-month extension by filing Form 4868 on or before April 15, moving the filing deadline to October 15.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6081 – Extension of Time for Filing Returns For tax year 2025 returns, filed in 2026, April 15 is a Wednesday and October 15 is a Thursday, so neither date shifts.
When those dates fall on a weekend or a legal holiday recognized in the District of Columbia, the deadline moves to the next business day. Emancipation Day, observed in DC on April 16, is the one that occasionally pushes the tax deadline to April 17 or 18. In 2026, Emancipation Day is April 16 but does not affect April 15, which is a regular business day.2Internal Revenue Service. Publication 509 – Tax Calendars
The Extension Does Not Extend Your Time to Pay
You still owe any unpaid tax by April 15, even though the return itself is not due until October. The IRS expects you to estimate what you owe when you submit Form 4868 and send payment along with it.
If you underpay, interest starts accruing from April 15. For the first quarter of 2026, the IRS underpayment rate is 7% per year, compounded daily, and the rate resets every quarter.3Internal Revenue Service. Quarterly Interest Rates A separate failure-to-pay penalty of 0.5% of the unpaid tax applies for each month or partial month the balance stays outstanding, up to 25%.4Internal Revenue Service. Failure to Pay Penalty The failure-to-pay rate drops to 0.25% per month once you have an installment agreement in place, which is one reason to move quickly even when cash is tight.
Filing the extension and paying most of what you owe is far better than filing the extension and paying nothing. A rough estimate that covers 90% of your liability cuts the penalty and interest exposure sharply.
Safe Harbors That Avoid the Underpayment Penalty
You can sidestep the underpayment penalty entirely by meeting any one of these benchmarks:
- Withholding and estimated payments cover at least 90% of the tax shown on your 2025 return.
- Withholding and estimated payments equal at least 100% of the total tax on your 2024 return, or 110% if your 2024 adjusted gross income exceeded $150,000.
- After withholding and credits, you owe less than $1,000.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6654 – Failure by Individual to Pay Estimated Income Tax
Meeting one of these means no penalty, though interest still runs on any remaining balance. The 110% figure catches high earners in years where income jumped.
How to Pay With the Extension
The IRS accepts extension payments several ways, and paying through some of them files the extension for you without a separate Form 4868:6Internal Revenue Service. If You Need More Time to File, Request an Extension
- IRS Direct Pay, a free bank transfer through the IRS website.
- EFTPS, the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System, which lets you schedule payments in advance.7Bureau of the Fiscal Service. Electronic Federal Tax Payment System
- Credit or debit card through a third-party processor, which charges a convenience fee.
- Check or money order mailed with Form 4868 to the IRS address for your state.
If you cannot pay anything by April 15, file the extension anyway. Short-term IRS payment plans of 180 days or fewer have no setup fee, and long-term installment agreements start at $22 when you apply online with direct debit.8Internal Revenue Service. Payment Plans – Installment Agreements
Why Filing the Extension Matters Even When You Cannot Pay
The failure-to-file penalty is 5% of the unpaid tax for each month the return is late, capping at 25%.9Internal Revenue Service. Failure to File Penalty The failure-to-pay penalty is 0.5% per month, also capping at 25%. When both apply in the same month, the IRS reduces the failure-to-file amount by the failure-to-pay amount, so the combined bite is 5%, not 5.5%.4Internal Revenue Service. Failure to Pay Penalty
Someone who files the extension and pays nothing owes 0.5% per month. Someone who skips the extension entirely and pays nothing owes 5% per month. Over five months, that is 2.5% versus 25% on the same unpaid balance. The extension itself is worth filing even when the check will not go in the envelope.
Business Extension Deadlines by Entity
All business extensions run on Form 7004.10Internal Revenue Service. About Form 7004, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File Certain Business Income Tax, Information, and Other Returns The calendar differs by entity type.
Partnerships and S-Corporations
Calendar-year partnerships filing Form 1065 and S-corporations filing Form 1120-S are due March 15. In 2026, March 15 is a Sunday, so the deadline shifts to Monday, March 16.2Internal Revenue Service. Publication 509 – Tax Calendars Filing Form 7004 by that date extends the return to September 15.
Late-filing penalties work differently here. Rather than a percentage of unpaid tax, the penalty is $255 per partner or shareholder for each month the return is late, up to 12 months.9Internal Revenue Service. Failure to File Penalty Because partnerships themselves do not pay income tax, the penalty falls on the entity regardless of any tax owed.11Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6698 – Failure to File Partnership Return It accumulates fast in entities with many owners.
C-Corporations
Calendar-year C-corporations file Form 1120 by April 15. A six-month extension via Form 7004 moves the deadline to October 15.
Trusts and Estates
Calendar-year trusts and estates file Form 1041 by April 15, but the extension is shorter than for other entities. Form 7004 grants trusts and estates an automatic five-month extension to September 15, not six months.12Internal Revenue Service. File an Estate Tax Income Tax Return Fiduciaries who assume an October 15 date get caught by this.
Taxpayers Living Abroad
U.S. citizens and resident aliens whose main home and place of work are outside the United States and Puerto Rico get an automatic two-month extension to June 15 without filing any form. You attach a statement to the return explaining that you qualified.13Internal Revenue Service. U.S. Citizens and Resident Aliens Abroad – Automatic 2-Month Extension of Time to File Interest on any unpaid tax still runs from April 15.
If June 15 is not enough, filing Form 4868 before that date extends the deadline to October 15.14Internal Revenue Service. U.S. Citizens and Resident Aliens Abroad Eligibility hinges on your tax home genuinely being in a foreign country rather than on a temporary assignment.15Internal Revenue Service. Foreign Earned Income Exclusion
Combat Zone Service
Service members in designated combat zones or contingency operations receive the most generous extension in the tax code. The IRS disregards the entire period of service in the zone, any continuous hospitalization from injuries sustained there, and an additional 180 days after leaving. Whatever days remained before the original filing deadline when the service member entered the zone get added back on top.16Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 7508 – Time for Performing Certain Acts Postponed by Reason of Service in Combat Zone or Contingency Operation No penalties or interest accrue during this suspended period, which is the critical difference from the overseas extension where interest still runs.
Federal Disaster Areas
When the President declares a federal disaster area based on a FEMA assessment, the IRS automatically postpones filing and payment deadlines for affected taxpayers.17Internal Revenue Service. Disaster Assistance and Emergency Relief for Individuals and Businesses You generally do not need to call or file anything; the relief applies to anyone whose address is in a covered county or region.
The length varies by disaster. Some declarations push deadlines by weeks, others by months. The IRS maintains a running list of current declarations, eligible localities, and the specific adjusted deadlines.18Internal Revenue Service. Tax Relief in Disaster Situations If you are in an area that recently experienced flooding, hurricanes, wildfires, or similar events, check that list before assuming the standard deadlines apply. Disaster extensions can also postpone payment, unlike a standard Form 4868.
Submitting the Extended Return
E-filing through IRS-approved software is the fastest route; the IRS sends an electronic acknowledgment as soon as the transmission is received.19Internal Revenue Service. Electronic Communication Between IRS and Transmitters During the MeF E-File Process
For paper returns, the postmark date counts as the filing date under federal law, so a return mailed on October 15 is timely even if it arrives at the IRS days later.20Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 7502 – Timely Mailing Treated as Timely Filing and Paying Certified mail with a return receipt creates a paper trail of the mailing date. Keep the receipt. In a dispute over timely filing, the postmark is your proof.
