FAFSA applications for the 2026–27 school year are due by 11:59 p.m. Central time on June 30, 2027, and applications for the 2025–26 year are due by 11:59 p.m. CT on June 30, 2026.1Federal Student Aid. FAFSA Application Deadlines That federal cutoff always falls on June 30 at the end of the academic year you’re applying for. State and college deadlines are much earlier — often between January and April — and much of the money runs out before the federal date arrives, so the practical answer is to file as soon after October 1 as you can.
The Federal June 30 Deadline
The FAFSA opens each October 1. The FAFSA Deadline Act, enacted in 2024, made that October 1 launch a statutory requirement for the Department of Education.2U.S. Congress. H.R.8932 – FAFSA Deadline Act Before the law, the Department had more flexibility; the 2024–25 form launched late in December because of processing issues.3U.S. Department of Education. Miss June 30 and you permanently lose eligibility for all federal student aid for that academic year: Pell Grants, Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans, the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), and Federal Work-Study.
Why June 30 Is Too Late in Practice
The federal deadline is a legal cutoff, not a target. Two federal programs, FSEOG and Federal Work-Study, are funded through fixed allocations the Department of Education sends to each school for the year.4Federal Student Aid. Campus-Based Programs Common Elements Once a school hands out its allocation, those funds are gone for the year, even though the federal deadline is still months away.
Pell Grants work differently. Pell is an entitlement, so every eligible student who files by June 30 receives it. The maximum Pell Grant for the 2026–27 year is $7,395.5Federal Student Aid. 2026-27 Federal Pell Grant Maximum and Minimum Award Amounts Loans behave the same way: eligibility does not depend on timing beyond meeting the deadline. The money that disappears when you file late is the campus-based money and, more importantly, the state and institutional money layered on top of it.
State FAFSA Deadlines
Most state grant agencies set their own FAFSA filing deadlines well before June 30, and those deadlines control eligibility for state scholarships and tuition assistance programs that pull data from your FAFSA.
The deadlines vary widely. Some states publish a priority date, commonly between February and April, after which remaining funds are awarded first-come, first-served. Other states treat the posted date as a hard cutoff with no flexibility at all. Look up your state’s specific deadline on the FAFSA deadline page at studentaid.gov, or contact your state’s higher education agency directly.1Federal Student Aid. FAFSA Application Deadlines
College Priority Deadlines
Colleges set their own FAFSA priority dates, typically between January and March, to allocate limited campus-based funds. Schools receive a fixed dollar amount from the Department of Education for FSEOG and Work-Study and hand awards out until the money is gone.4Federal Student Aid. Campus-Based Programs Common Elements Treat a published priority date as an early target rather than a safe last day. Funds often run out before the priority date itself.
The CSS Profile
Some colleges, particularly private universities, also require the CSS Profile to award their own institutional aid.6College Board. About CSS Profile It’s a separate application from the College Board that collects more detailed financial information than the FAFSA, including home equity and non-custodial parent income. The CSS Profile typically opens October 1, but each school sets its own CSS Profile deadline, and those deadlines often fall earlier than the school’s FAFSA priority date. The application is free for families with an adjusted gross income up to $100,000; above that threshold, there’s a fee per school.7College Board. CSS Profile Fee Waivers Confirm with each college whether it’s required and when it’s due.
Correction Deadlines
After you submit, you have a separate window to fix errors or update information. For the 2026–27 award year, corrections are due by 11:59 p.m. CT on September 12, 2027. For 2025–26, corrections are due by 11:59 p.m. CT on September 12, 2026.1Federal Student Aid. FAFSA Application Deadlines
Common reasons to correct a FAFSA include a change in family size, updated income figures, adding or removing schools, or fixing data-entry mistakes. Once the correction deadline passes, no further changes can be made for that award year. Unresolved discrepancies after that date can result in withheld funds or a requirement to repay aid that was over-awarded.
How to Beat the Deadlines That Actually Matter
Given how the money moves, the deadline you should plan around is not June 30. It’s whichever comes first: your state’s priority date, your college’s priority date, or your CSS Profile deadline. That usually puts your real target somewhere between October and March of the year before you enroll.
Filing early goes faster if you have your materials ready before you sit down. You’ll need a Social Security number or Alien Registration number, an FSA ID (a studentaid.gov account) for you and for each contributor, federal tax information (transferred automatically from the IRS with each contributor’s consent through the Direct Data Exchange), records of untaxed income such as child support received, and information on savings, investments, and any business holdings.8Federal Student Aid. Steps for Students Filling Out the FAFSA Form A contributor is anyone required to provide information on your FAFSA: you, your spouse if you’re married, a biological or adoptive parent, or a parent’s spouse. Each contributor needs their own studentaid.gov account and must consent to the IRS data transfer. Contributors without a Social Security number can still create an account through an alternative identity verification process.9Federal Student Aid.
