Skipping Form 8962 doesn’t work. What happens depends on how you filed:

  • E-filed returns: The IRS rejects the return outright under business rule F8962-070 when its records show advance credits but the return has no Form 8962 attached. You add the form and resubmit before the return processes at all.
  • Paper-filed returns: The IRS accepts the return initially, then sends a letter asking for the missing form. Any refund is held while the correspondence works its way back and forth.

If the Filing Deadline Is Close

When the 1095-A finally shows up, complete Form 8962 and file the return as normal.

Check for More Than One Form

Don’t assume there’s only one 1095-A waiting for you. You get a separate form for each Marketplace policy you were enrolled in during the year.
