For federal tax purposes, the deadline runs on your own local time zone: a return is timely if you submit it by midnight on the due date where you live.1Internal Revenue Service. Due Dates and Extension Dates for E-File A filer in New York has until midnight Eastern. A filer in Honolulu has until midnight Hawaii-Aleutian, which is six hours of real clock time after the East Coast cutoff has already passed. The location of the IRS processing center or your tax software’s servers doesn’t matter — your clock does.
Your Local Time Zone Controls the Filing
The midnight-where-you-are rule applies whether you e-file or mail the return. For e-filed returns, your software provider records an “electronic postmark” showing the exact date and time it received your completed transmission. Federal regulations are explicit that when you and the transmitter sit in different time zones, your time zone is the one that decides whether the return was on time.2eCFR. 26 CFR 301.7502-1 – Timely Mailing of Documents and Payments Treated as Timely Filing and Paying If you live in Mountain Time and your provider’s servers are in New York, your cutoff is midnight Mountain.
After the IRS processes an e-filed return, you’ll get an electronic acknowledgment confirming acceptance.3Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 301, When, How and Where to File Keep it. That confirmation is what proves the filing time if the IRS ever questions when your return arrived.
For tax year 2025, the filing deadline is April 15, 2026, a Wednesday with no holiday conflict.4Internal Revenue Service. When to File
Electronic Payments Often Run on Eastern Time
The time-zone rule that protects your return does not protect every payment method. Some IRS payment systems operate on Eastern Time no matter where you live, and their cutoffs land before midnight on the due date. Missing one of these can create a late payment even when the return itself is timely.
EFTPS, the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System, requires payments to be scheduled by 8 p.m. Eastern Time the day before the due date.5EFTPS. Welcome to EFTPS Online For an April 15 deadline, that means the payment has to be in the system no later than 8 p.m. ET on April 14. A Pacific Time filer who sits down at 6 p.m. local on April 14 has already missed it — the East Coast is at 9 p.m.
IRS Direct Pay also processes scheduled payments on Eastern Time.6Internal Revenue Service. Reminder: Schedule and Pay Federal Taxes Electronically If you’re relying on either system for a last-minute payment, don’t cut it close. Paying by credit or debit card through an IRS-approved processor is another route that may accept payments closer to midnight in your local zone.
Postmark Timing for Mailed Returns
If you mail your return, the postmark date on the envelope is your filing date, even if the envelope doesn’t physically reach the IRS for several days.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 7502 – Timely Mailing Treated as Timely Filing and Paying The envelope must be properly addressed, carry enough postage, and be in the mail by the deadline.
For an unambiguous record, take the envelope to a post office counter and ask for a hand-applied postmark.8USPS. Mailing Your Tax Return A machine-applied USPS postmark also works. Dates from private postage meters draw extra scrutiny: if the return arrives late, the IRS can require you to prove the mailing was actually on time and that the postal service caused the delay.2eCFR. 26 CFR 301.7502-1 – Timely Mailing of Documents and Payments Treated as Timely Filing and Paying A USPS Certificate of Mailing provides an official date and sidesteps that problem entirely.
The IRS also accepts specific service levels from FedEx, UPS, and DHL Express as equivalents to USPS for the timely-mailing rule. Standard ground and basic services are not on the list, so check the current qualifying services before shipping, and ask the carrier for written proof of the send date.9Internal Revenue Service. Private Delivery Services (PDS)
When the Deadline Falls on a Weekend or Holiday
If the normal due date lands on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the deadline shifts to the next business day.10Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 7503 – Time for Performance of Acts Where Last Day Falls on Saturday, Sunday, or Legal Holiday For federal tax purposes, “legal holiday” includes holidays recognized in the District of Columbia, not just holidays observed nationwide.
That’s why Emancipation Day, observed in D.C. on April 16, sometimes pushes the deadline into the following week.11Internal Revenue Service. Publication 509 (2026), Tax Calendars It doesn’t happen every year. In 2026 April 15 is a Wednesday, so the standard date holds.
Disaster Area Extensions
The IRS also postpones filing and payment deadlines for taxpayers in federally declared disaster areas, often by several months. Relief applies automatically to anyone whose home or business is in the designated area. If a recent disaster has affected where you live, check the current disaster relief list on IRS.gov before assuming the standard date applies.
Extensions Follow the Same Clock
Form 4868 gives you an automatic six-month extension, moving the filing deadline from April 15 to October 15.12Internal Revenue Service. Get an Extension to File Your Tax Return The extension request itself is subject to the same midnight-in-your-time-zone rule: it has to be e-filed or postmarked by midnight on April 15 where you live.
An extension buys time to file, not time to pay. Any balance is still due by the original April 15 deadline, and the failure-to-pay penalty and interest start running the next day if you underpay.12Internal Revenue Service. Get an Extension to File Your Tax Return Estimate what you owe and send as much of it as you can with the extension request.
If You’re Living Abroad
U.S. citizens and resident aliens whose main home or duty station is outside the United States and Puerto Rico on April 15 get an automatic two-month extension to file, moving the deadline to June 15.13Internal Revenue Service. Automatic 2-Month Extension of Time to File Attach a statement to the return explaining which qualifying situation applies. The two-month grace is for filing only; interest on any unpaid balance still runs from April 15. If you need more time after June 15, Form 4868 pushes the filing deadline to October 15.
State Returns May Not Follow Your Clock
Most states with an income tax match the federal April 15 date, but each state writes its own time-zone rules. Some may treat midnight in the state capital’s time zone as the cutoff rather than midnight where the taxpayer sits, which shortens the window if you live west of the taxing state. If you owe a state to your east, confirm on that state’s revenue website which clock applies before you file at the last minute.
What Late Filing Actually Costs
Miss the deadline and two penalties begin accruing the day after the due date, along with interest:
- Failure-to-file penalty: 5% of your unpaid tax balance for each month or partial month the return is late, capped at 25%.14Internal Revenue Service. Failure to File Penalty
- Failure-to-pay penalty: 0.5% of the unpaid balance per month, also capped at 25%. When both penalties apply in the same month, the failure-to-file amount is reduced by the failure-to-pay amount, so the combined rate is 5% per month for the first five months.14Internal Revenue Service. Failure to File Penalty
- Interest on unpaid balances, adjusted quarterly. The individual underpayment rate for early 2026 is 7% per year.15Internal Revenue Service. Quarterly Interest Rates
The failure-to-pay rate is one-tenth of the failure-to-file rate, so the costliest mistake by far is not filing at all. If you owe money and cannot pay in full, file the return or an extension by midnight in your local time zone, send whatever payment you can, and arrange a payment plan with the IRS for the rest.
